The review

Split in short

Split is the rare city where you sleep inside the monument. [Diocletian's Palace](/split/diokletian-palace/) is not a fenced ruin but the working old town, with three thousand people living and running bars, bakeries and apartments inside the Roman walls, and the Riva promenade out front acts as the city's living room. Travelers rate it a better-rounded stop than Dubrovnik for most trips: cheaper, more lived-in, and fronted by a ferry port that makes it a launchpad rather than a cul-de-sac.

The trade-off everyone reports is July and August, when cruise crowds plus heat make the palace lanes hard and accommodation prices double or worse. The beach answer is straightforward too: pebbly Bacvice five minutes on foot is fine rather than spectacular, and the real swimming is on the islands. Drivers should know the old town is car-free and parking is a known headache, and anyone after a quiet, sleepy Dalmatia will find a working port city with edges.

The rest of the itinerary writes itself: [Klis fortress](/split/klis-fortress/) on the ridge for the TV-famous walls, [Krka waterfalls](/split/krka-waterfalls-day-trip/) for the scenery, [Marjan hill](/split/marjan-hill/) for the free sunset walk, and the ferries and catamarans to Hvar and Brac, with the [Hvar day trip](/split/hvar-day-trip/) and the [Blue Cave tour](/split/blue-cave-tour/) dominating trip recaps. Two to three days covers the city and Marjan plus a day per island or waterfall trip, and most itineraries run four to five nights; [the where-to-stay verdict](/split/where-to-stay-in-split/) prefers Veli Varos and the lanes just outside the walls for quiet and value, while the [Split or Dubrovnik](/split/split-or-dubrovnik/) verdict lands on Split for longer stays. May, June, September and early October bring warm seas and working prices.

Go if

  • Sleeping inside a Roman palace; the old town is the attraction
  • Island-hopping: Hvar, Brac and Vis all leave from the port next door
  • A Dalmatian base that mixes city, beach and day trips evenly
  • Travelers who find Dubrovnik too staged and too expensive
  • Fans of living cities over preserved ones

Skip if

  • July and August if shoulder season is an option; the crush and heat are real
  • Anyone driving: the center is pedestrian-only and parking is a known headache
  • A quiet, sleepy Dalmatia; Split is a working port city with edges
  • Beach-purist trips; Bacvice is pleasant but the good swimming is on the islands
When to go
May to June and September to early October for warm seas and working prices. July and August bring the ferry crush, heat and peak rates.
How long
2 to 3 days for the city and Marjan, plus a day per island or waterfall trip; most itineraries run 4 to 5 nights.
Getting around
The center is walkable and car-free. Ferries and catamarans leave the port beside the old town; the airport shuttle and city buses run to Split airport in about 40 minutes.
