The review
Salzburg in short
Salzburg is the most polished small city in the German-speaking world: a baroque Altstadt folded under the [Hohensalzburg fortress](/salzburg/hohensalzburg-fortress/), the Salzach splitting church towers from monastery gardens, and Mirabell's parterre staring straight at the castle walls. It runs on two engines, Mozart and the Sound of Music, and reports say it looks exactly like the postcards, which is both the draw and, for some, the problem.
The caveats are crowds and price: festival weeks in summer and the December Christmas markets pack the narrow lanes and push hotel rates sharply up, and the same polish that makes Salzburg pretty makes it feel managed rather than lived-in. The Altstadt is one of Europe's most organized visitor machines, day-trippers flood it between ten and five, nightlife is minimal and the city sleeps early, and anyone unmoved by pretty will find nothing edgy on offer.
Reports that like Salzburg best treat it as a two-night stay inside a bigger trip rather than a week-long base, and [the standing verdict](/salzburg/salzburg-day-trip-or-overnight/) on day trip versus overnight lands on overnight, since the city's best hours are the evenings when the lanes empty. The day trips carry the other half of the value: [Hallstatt](/salzburg/hallstatt-day-trip/) is the famous and most crowded one, while the [Eagle's Nest at Berchtesgaden](/salzburg/eagles-nest-day-trip/) rates higher for mountains plus history, and the [Salzburg Card](/salzburg/salzburg-card/) earns its keep if the fortress, museums and funicular are all on the list. Sleep in the Altstadt for atmosphere or the Neustadt side around Linzer Gasse for value, per the [where to stay](/salzburg/where-to-stay-in-salzburg/) guide.
Go if
- Mozart and classical-music pilgrims
- Baroque old-town strolling between churches, squares and gardens
- Sound of Music fans; the tour route still delivers
- Alpine day trips: Hallstatt, Berchtesgaden, the Salzkammergut lakes
- A refined two-night stop between Munich and Vienna
Skip if
- Travelers allergic to tour groups; the Altstadt is one of Europe's most organized
- Nightlife or grit: the city sleeps early and stays polite
- Festival or Christmas-market weeks on a budget; rates spike hard
- Anyone unmoved by pretty; Salzburg does not do edgy
- When to go
- May to June and September for decent weather without the festival peak. August is the Salzburg Festival; December is Christmas markets; both book out early and price high.
- How long
- 2 nights for the city itself; 3 to 4 total with a day trip to Hallstatt or Berchtesgaden.
- Getting around
- The center is fully walkable; buses cover the rest and are free with the Guest Mobility Ticket that hotels now issue. Trains run to Munich in 90 minutes and Vienna in about 2.5 hours.
