Crete, verdict by verdict

Crete behaves less like a Greek island than a small country with a coastline attached. Our verdicts cover Balos lagoon, Elafonissi beach and Palace of Knossos, the airport route and where to stay.

The review

Crete in short

Crete behaves less like a Greek island than a small country with a coastline attached. A mountain spine still decides where villages sit and what lands on the table, Minoan palaces share the map with Venetian harbour towns, and the food is a regional cuisine of its own rather than generic Greek. Travelers arrive for the beaches and stay for the depth: gorges, stone villages, and two very different city bases in Chania on the west and Heraklion around Knossos in the centre.

The catch is scale and spread. Crossing the island east to west takes four-plus hours of driving, the postcard lagoons of Balos and Elafonissi sit at the far west hours from Heraklion, and Samaria costs a full strenuous day ending in a ferry-and-bus logistics chain. High summer runs hot, the strip between Heraklion and Chersonissos is as package-holiday as Greece gets, and anyone picturing the whitewashed Cyclades look should know Crete is earthier: olive groves, stone villages, gorges. Without a car or tours, the west-coast beaches are impractical from Heraklion, and under four days the island's size punishes the trip.

The shape that works is a rental car plus a split stay between the Chania and Heraklion sides, treating the island as a five-to-ten-day trip rather than a long weekend. KTEL buses link the towns reliably and cheaply, and the airport sits 4 km outside Heraklion. It suits travelers who want beaches alongside real archaeology, hikers bound for Samaria, Imbros and the E4, and food-led trips. May-June and September-October bring warm seas, open gorges and bearable heat, while winter is mild with many resort areas shut.

Go if

  • Travelers who want beaches plus real archaeology: Knossos, Phaistos and the Heraklion museum
  • Hikers: Samaria, Imbros and the E4 paths are Europe-class
  • Food-led trips: Cretan cooking is its own regional cuisine, not generic Greek
  • A long island stay where different bases unlock different regions

Skip if

  • You want the whitewashed-cyclades look; that is Santorini or Mykonos, not Crete
  • No car and no tours: the west coast beaches are impractical from Heraklion by public transport
  • You have under 4 days; the island's size punishes a short trip
When to go
May-June and September-October for warm seas, open gorges and bearable heat. July-August is peak crowding with the meltemi wind on the north coast. Samaria is typically closed November to April; winter is mild but many resort areas shut.
How long
Five days minimum for one region plus Knossos. Seven to ten days lets you split between a Chania-side base and the centre or east without rushing.
Getting around
A rental car is close to essential outside the Heraklion-Chania bus corridor. KTEL buses link the towns reliably and cheaply; Samaria and the west beaches need either a car, an organised tour or a ferry leg. Heraklion airport sits 4 km from the city.
