Malmo in short
Malmo is Sweden's most easygoing city: a medieval core around Lilla Torg, Calatrava's twisting Turning Torso on the redeveloped harbour, a proper city beach at Ribersborg with its 1898 cold baths, and one of the country's most international food scenes, all stitched together by bike lanes. Copenhagen sits thirty-five minutes away across the Oresund Bridge, which makes Malmo both a destination and a day-trip base.
The real caveats: the sight list is compact rather than packed, since the pull here is liveability rather than landmarks; the weather runs Baltic-grey outside summer; and Copenhagen Airport is the real gateway while Malmo's own field has few routes. In exchange you get Swedish quality of life at noticeably lower prices than across the sound.
Two days is the right dose: old town, castle and Lilla Torg on one, Turning Torso, Ribersborg and the food halls on the next, with Lund or a Copenhagen hop if there is a third. Everything is flat and bikeable, May to September brings harbour swims and festival season, and winter turns grey but cosy when the food halls matter most.
Go if
- Turning Torso and the West Harbour waterfront
- Lilla Torg, Malmohus castle, and the old town squares
- Ribersborg beach and the 1898 cold baths
- Lund, Copenhagen, and Oresund coast day trips
Skip if
- You want blockbuster sights; Malmo's pull is liveability, not landmarks
- You need a big airport; Malmo's own field has few routes so most arrive via Copenhagen
- When to go
- May to September for the beach, harbour swims, and festival season; the city is grey but cosy in winter when the food halls matter most.
- How long
- Two days covers the city; add one for Lund or a bridge crossing to Copenhagen.
- Getting around
- Flat and fully bikeable; the centre is walkable and buses cover the rest. Copenhagen Airport is 35 minutes by Oresund train; Malmo Airport is a 40-minute Flygbussarna ride.
