The review

Bern in short

Bern is the capital that forgot to act like one: a UNESCO sandstone old town wrapped around the turquoise Aare bend, six kilometres of weather-proof arcades, the Zytglogge's little mechanical show, free bear enclosures on the edge of the old town, and the Gurten hill's Alp-lined panorama. It may be Europe's most walkable capital, and in summer locals commute home by floating the river itself.

The trade-offs are hours and scale: shops close early and all day Sunday, the clock-tower show runs under a minute unless you catch the full tour, the bears hibernate November to March, the Aare float demands confident swimmers with no lifeguards, and the biggest pleasures are summer-only. The Emmental show dairy stopped live production in 2025, food tours run thin, and big-city buzz-seekers will find evenings quiet.

One full day covers the old town, the Zytglogge and the Bear Park; a second adds the Gurten or a museum, a third the Emmental hills or Thun's lake castle. Late November brings the beloved onion market, the city's oddball festival. It suits travelers who want a beautiful, unhurried capital rather than a blockbuster one, and Zurich's airport rail lands you in about an hour.

Go if

  • The UNESCO old town and the six-kilometre covered arcades
  • Zytglogge clock tower tour and the Munster terrace
  • Aare floating and the free riverside baths in summer
  • Emmental cheese country and the Gurten hill

Skip if

  • You need nightlife and Sunday shopping; Bern closes early and fully on Sundays
  • You want big-museum culture; Kunstmuseum aside, the sights are small-scale
When to go
June to August for the Aare float and open-air pools; late November for the onion market (Zibelemarit), the city's beloved oddball festival.
How long
One full day covers the old town; two adds the Gurten or a museum day, three an Emmental or Thun day trip.
Getting around
Walk everywhere inside the old town bend; trams cover the rest and the Bern Ticket from your hotel is free. Bern airport is tiny; most arrivals come by train from Zurich airport in 75 minutes.
