The review

Madrid in short

Madrid is the Spanish capital in full voice: the Prado, the Reina Sofia and the Thyssen within a short walk of each other, tapas bars packed at midnight, and a city that eats later and lives louder than anywhere else in Europe. It lacks one postcard icon, which is exactly why it feels real; the attraction is daily life itself in the La Latina squares, the market halls and Retiro park.

The straightforward caveat is that Madrid rewards appetite more than checklist tourism. Travelers expecting Barcelona-style spectacle find it plainer, August is furnace-hot and semi-deserted, early nights are not really on the menu, and the museum triangle needs proper time rather than a sprint. Spring and autumn are the seasons that make it sing.

Three to four days covers the museum triangle, the palace, Retiro and the tapas quarters, with a day more for Toledo, Segovia or El Escorial. Stay in Barrio de las Letras or La Latina as the [Madrid area guide](/madrid/where-to-stay-in-madrid/) lays out, ride the cheap clean metro that reaches the airport on line 8 (see [Madrid airport to city](/madrid/madrid-airport-to-city/) for rail and bus), and run the days as museums by day and tapas crawls by night.

Go if

  • One of Europe's great museum triangles: Prado, Reina Sofia, Thyssen
  • Tapas culture, late dinners and loud nights
  • A real working capital that lives in its streets
  • Day trips to Toledo, Segovia or El Escorial

Skip if

  • You want one iconic skyline sight; Madrid is subtler
  • August heat well above 35C would ruin the trip
  • Early nights and quiet evenings are non-negotiable
When to go
April to June and September to October for warm days and terrace nights; July and especially August are brutally hot and many locals leave. Winter is cold, sunny and cheap with light crowds.
How long
3 to 4 days for the museum triangle, the palace, Retiro and the tapas quarters; add one for Toledo. Stay in Barrio de las Letras or La Latina, as our [Madrid area guide](/madrid/where-to-stay-in-madrid/) lays out.
Getting around
The metro is cheap, clean and reaches everything, including the airport on line 8; the center walks easily. See [Madrid airport to city](/madrid/madrid-airport-to-city/) for the rail and bus options.
