The review

Chamonix in short

Chamonix is the mountain town under Mont Blanc: a real valley town with a lively centre, where the Aiguille du Midi cable car, the Montenvers train to the Mer de Glace and the high trails put serious Alpine scenery within a short ride of your hotel. Skiers fill it in winter, hikers and climbers in summer, and paragliders circle overhead whenever the weather allows.

The caveats are weather and crowds. The high lifts are only worth their price on a clear day, queues build at the big sights in peak weeks, and rooms in the centre fill early. The valley is long, so where you stay shapes how much time you spend on buses and trains.

Treat the forecast as your planner and keep a flexible day for the summit lifts. Skiing has its own resort verdict; this hub covers the sights, the passes and the practical choices around them.

Go if

  • The Aiguille du Midi and other high viewpoints on clear days
  • Hiking to lakes and glaciers in summer
  • A lively mountain town base rather than a quiet village

Skip if

  • You can only come for one day and the forecast is cloudy
  • You want a quiet village; the centre is busy in peak season
  • Heights and cable cars are not for you
When to go
Winter for snow and skiing, summer for hiking and the full set of high lifts and trails. Pick your clearest day for the summit viewpoints.
How long
Two to three nights covers the main lifts with a backup day for weather; add more for hiking or skiing.
Getting around
Geneva airport is 88 km away; shuttles take around 1 hour 15 minutes depending on traffic, and the Leman Express runs from the airport to Saint-Gervais-le-Fayet for the Mont Blanc Express to Chamonix. In the valley, the guest card from your accommodation gives free SNCF train travel between Servoz and Vallorcine and discounted buses.
