The review

Basel in short

Basel is Switzerland's quiet culture capital: a compact medieval old town on the Rhine where the Kunstmuseum, the Fondation Beyeler and a working riverfront sit within a fifteen-minute walk of each other. It is the Swiss city that feels least like a postcard and most like a place people actually live, with France and Germany both on the doorstep.

The costs are real: this is Switzerland's second-priciest city after Zurich, several headline museums close on Mondays, and the famous Rhine swim is a locals' ritual that needs a Wickelfisch bag and some nerve. Alpine scenery is a day trip away rather than out the window, and Baselworld or Art Basel weeks triple hotel prices unless that is the reason for coming.

Two to three days covers it: one for the old town, Munster terrace and Kunstmuseum, one for Beyeler or the zoo plus a summer Rhine float, and a third for Colmar, the Alsace wine route or Augusta Raurica. Every hotel guest gets the BaselCard with free public transport from check-in. It suits art-first travelers, December Christmas-market trips and anyone who likes their Switzerland walkable and lived-in.

Go if

  • Kunstmuseum and Fondation Beyeler: two of Europe's best art collections
  • Old town, Munster terrace, and the Marktplatz town hall
  • Rhine swimming and boat trips in summer
  • Day trips to Colmar, the Alsace wine route, or Augusta Raurica

Skip if

  • You want alpine scenery; Basel is a river city, the mountains are a day trip away
  • You are on a tight budget; this is Switzerland's second-priciest city after Zurich
When to go
May to September for the Rhine swim and terrace season; December for one of Switzerland's best Christmas markets; avoid the Baselworld and Art Basel weeks unless that is why you are coming, when hotel prices triple.
How long
Two to three days covers the core with a museum day; add one more for an Alsace or Lucerne day trip.
Getting around
Entirely walkable plus trams. Every hotel guest gets the BaselCard with free public transport from check-in. The airport bus 50 takes 15 minutes to SBB.
