The review

Zermatt in short

Zermatt is the car-free village under the Matterhorn: a resort town of chalets and hotels where the mountain itself is the main event, seen from the Gornergrat railway, the cable cars up to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and the trails in between. Skiers come in winter, hikers in summer, and the Glacier Express starts here for anyone crossing the Alps by rail.

The caveats are price and weather. Hotels, food and the high lifts all run at Swiss resort levels, and the Matterhorn hides in cloud on some days, which makes a viewpoint ticket a poor buy that day. Getting in also takes time, since cars stop at Taesch and the last leg is by shuttle train or taxi.

Plan around the mountain rather than the village. A couple of nights gives you a second chance at clear weather for the summit viewpoints, the village itself is small and walkable, and the separate ski resort verdict covers the slopes for anyone coming to ski.

Go if

  • Matterhorn views from the Gornergrat and the glacier cable cars
  • A car-free Alpine village as a base for hiking or skiing
  • Starting or ending a Glacier Express journey

Skip if

  • Swiss resort prices for rooms, food and lifts are a problem
  • You only have one day and the forecast is cloudy
  • You want a city break with museums and nightlife
When to go
Winter for snow and skiing, summer for hiking trails and the high viewpoints in longer daylight. Whatever the season, pick your clearest day for the summit lifts.
How long
Two nights gives you a backup day for weather at the viewpoints; add more for hiking or skiing.
Getting around
Zermatt is car-free: private cars can only go as far as Taesch, about 5 km away, and shuttle trains run from there to Zermatt every 20 minutes in about 12 minutes. The village is compact and walkable, and mountain railways and cable cars reach the viewpoints.
