The review

Sofia in short

Sofia is the cheapest capital weekend in the EU and nobody seems to have noticed. The centre stacks Roman ruins, an Ottoman mosque, a gold-domed cathedral and a Stalinist Largo within a ten-minute walk, everything costs a fraction of Western prices, and Vitosha mountain looms at the end of the main shopping street.

It earns that candor by being scruffy: this is a working Balkan capital rather than a polished attraction circuit, metro signs switch to Cyrillic, English signage thins out, and anyone expecting a postcard-ready old town will find rough edges instead.

Two days covers the centre and Boyana Church, a third buys Rila Monastery or a full Vitosha hike, and the food and craft beer scene punches well above the price point. May, June and September bring warm days, open mountain trails and full cafe terraces, and the metro runs the airport to the centre in about thirty minutes. It pairs well with Bucharest or stands alone as a cheap break for travelers who like layered history and value over polish.

Go if

  • The cheapest quality city break left in the EU
  • Layers of Roman, Ottoman and Soviet history in a walkable centre
  • Rila Monastery and mountain hiking on the doorstep
  • A food and bar scene that punches above its price point

Skip if

  • You want a polished, postcard-ready old town
  • Unfamiliar alphabets and sparse English signage would stress you out
  • Your Bulgaria time is aimed at the Black Sea coast instead
When to go
May, June and September are the sweet spot: warm days, mountain trails open, cafe terraces full. July and August are hot but fine; winter is cold and grey, though it makes the mineral baths and mountain skiing tempting.
How long
2 days for the city itself, 3 if you add Rila Monastery or a full Vitosha day.
Getting around
The centre is walkable end to end. The metro covers the airport run in about 30 minutes; use official OK taxis or apps at the rank, never the touts inside arrivals. Vitosha's cable cars and buses leave from the southern edge of the centre.
