The review

Antwerp in short

Arrive under the stone dome of Centraal station, the railway cathedral commuters rush through without looking up, and you land inside the argument for Antwerp already made. This is Belgium's coolest city in the specific sense: Rubens' Descent from the Cross hangs in the cathedral spot it was painted for, fashion students sharpen themselves on Nationalestraat, the diamond quarter trades billions by the station, and the MAS tower hands you a free rooftop panorama over the Scheldt and the biggest port after Rotterdam. It is a working city with taste, busy being itself rather than posing as a museum set.

The fair trade-offs: Antwerp lacks the at-a-glance prettiness of Bruges or Ghent, so a rail-stop hour sells it short. The blocks around Centraal run scruffy and the station-side shopping streets draw pickpocketing reports. The diamond district exists for buyers rather than gawkers, the MAS collection reads as a maritime-folk hybrid more than a coherent story, and the Rubenshuis residence itself is shut until at least 2030, leaving an impressive audiovisual Experience where the mansion promised to be. Even the cathedral charges an entry fee, which surprises visitors used to free-entry churches.

Give it one to two days: cathedral, Rubens, the MAS tower at golden hour, a food tour for the handjes-and-chocolate story, and the fashion quarter. It pairs naturally with Ghent under an hour direct or Mechelen twenty minutes out, and works year-round with January bringing the sales. Stay in the historic centre near the cathedral and Grote Markt. Antwerp suits travelers who want art, edge and a real city over a preserved medieval one.
