The review
Interlaken in short
Interlaken sits on a strip of flat land between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, and most visitors use it as a launch pad rather than a destination. Trains and cable cars from here reach Jungfraujoch, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen and the Schilthorn, so the town's real draw is how quickly it puts you among the mountains.
The trade-offs are cost and weather. The high excursions are among the most expensive in Switzerland, and a cloudy day can hide the views you paid for, so flexible plans matter more than early bookings. The town itself is practical rather than charming, with chain shops and tour offices along the main street.
Base yourself here if you want the widest choice of trains, hotels and restaurants, or move up into a mountain village like Grindelwald if you would rather wake up with the peaks outside the window.
Go if
- Day trips to Jungfraujoch, the Schilthorn and Grindelwald
- A practical rail base with two lakes on the doorstep
- Hiking in summer and skiing in the Jungfrau region in winter
Skip if
- Swiss mountain excursion prices are a problem
- You want an attractive old town rather than a transport hub
- You only have a day and the forecast is cloudy
- When to go
- June to September for hiking and the longest opening hours of the mountain lifts; December to March for skiing and snow. Check seasonal closures, as some lifts shut for maintenance in spring and late autumn.
- How long
- Three nights gives you backup days for weather on the high excursions; add more for hiking or skiing.
- Getting around
- Interlaken has two stations, Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost, and the mountain railways to Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen start at Interlaken Ost. Trains reach Bern in under an hour, and lake boats run on Lake Thun and Lake Brienz in season.
