Galway in short
Galway is Ireland's cultural capital in miniature: a medieval Latin Quarter of buskers and pubs around Quay Street, the Claddagh and the Spanish Arch on the harbour, and trad-music sessions that outclass Dublin's. It doubles as the best base on the Wild Atlantic Way, with the Cliffs of Moher, Connemara and the Aran Islands all in day-trip reach and the oysters and west-coast food scene waiting back in town.
The caveats are structural. There has been no city airport since 2011, so everyone arrives by coach or train from Dublin or Shannon; the town itself is small enough that the sights are half-day affairs rather than a big-city list, and west-coast rain is a real itinerary factor. Travelers who want monuments over atmosphere will run out of checkboxes quickly.
Two days covers the town: the Latin Quarter, Claddagh and the cathedral on one, the Salthill promenade and the Blackrock diving tower plus a trad session on the next, with a third or fourth for Moher, Connemara or the Aran Islands. May to September brings long evenings and festival season, July the Arts Festival and the Galway Races, though the sessions run year-round. The centre is fully walkable, and the trip feels like Ireland distilled rather than Ireland seen.
