The review
Colmar in short
Colmar is a small Alsace town whose old centre is almost entirely half-timbered houses, canals and cobbled lanes, with the Petite Venise quarter as its picture-postcard core. It is also the natural base for the Alsace Wine Route, where villages like Riquewihr, Kaysersberg and Eguisheim sit a short drive or bus ride away.
The catch is that the town is small and very popular. In December the Christmas markets draw large crowds, especially at weekends, and rooms in the old town book out early. Most of what visitors come for can be seen in a day, so the value of staying longer depends on the wine villages and the season.
Plan a night or two if you want the town quiet in the early morning and evening, when the day-trip crowds have left, and use the extra time for the vineyards rather than more of the old town.
Go if
- Half-timbered streets and canals that are easy to explore on foot
- A base for the Alsace Wine Route villages
- Christmas markets in a compact old town
Skip if
- You dislike crowds and can only come on a December weekend
- You want big-city museums, nightlife or shopping
- You have no time or transport for the wine villages and have already seen Strasbourg
- When to go
- Late November to late December for the Christmas markets, accepting crowds; May, June and September for quieter streets and the vineyards; early autumn for the grape harvest.
- How long
- One full day covers the old town; two nights adds the Wine Route villages at a relaxed pace.
- Getting around
- The old town is compact and walkable. Regional trains link Colmar with Strasbourg in about half an hour, and buses and tours reach the Wine Route villages, though a car or bike gives the most freedom there.
