Split / The verdict

Is the Split Card worth it?

SplitCard is a free museum-and-discount card from the Split Tourist Board, picked up at the tourist information centers, and it costs nothing because it is gated behind your stay: five nights or more between April and October, two or more from November to March, valid 72 hours. For eligible travelers who will actually visit the three free museums and one or two discounted ones, it quietly saves 10 to 20 EUR. For everyone else it is unusable or irrelevant: most summer visitors stay under the five-night bar, and the card covers no transport, no ferries and none of the marquee sights.

The Split story

Split is the rare city where you sleep inside the monument. [Diocletian's Palace](/split/diokletian-palace/) is not a fenced ruin but the working old town, with three thousand people living and running bars, bakeries and apartments inside the Roman walls, and the Riva promenade out front acts as the city's living room. Travelers rate it a better-rounded stop than Dubrovnik for most trips: cheaper, more lived-in, and fronted by a ferry port that makes it a launchpad rather than a cul-de-sac.

The verdict in 30 seconds

It depends

SplitCard is a free museum-and-discount card from the Split Tourist Board, picked up at the tourist information centers, and it costs nothing because it is gated behind your stay: five nights or more between April and October, two or more from November to March, valid 72 hours. For eligible travelers who will actually visit the three free museums and one or two discounted ones, it quietly saves 10 to 20 EUR. Go if

  • You are staying 5 nights or more in Split between April and October, or 2 nights or more in winter, and plan at least a couple of museum visits.
  • You want the Ethnographic Museum, Vidović Gallery and Natural History Museum free, and 25 to 50 percent off the Archaeological Museum, Salona, the Maritime Museum and the Meštrović Gallery.
  • You like collecting small wins: 20 percent off theater tickets and scattered shop, tour and restaurant discounts stack up over a long stay.

Skip if

  • Your stay is under five nights in the April to October window: you simply cannot get the card, whatever you plan to visit.
  • Your trip is beaches, islands and boat trips: the card covers no transport, no ferries, and none of the palace interiors people queue for.
  • You would need to contrive museum visits to feel the saving: a card you never present saves nothing.

What travelers report

Based on 12 traveler reports (Apr 2025 to Sep 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 0 were negative.

What people like

  • 2 of the logged reports confirm the three museum freebies and the seasonal stay requirement work exactly as the tourist board describes.
  • 2 of the logged reports call the Ethnographic Museum the most rewarding of the covered museums, set inside the palace itself.
  • 2 of the logged reports rank the Maritime Museum inside the Gripe fortress a sleeper pick, torpedo collection and VR dives included.
  • 1 logged report stresses the card should support a museum plan rather than create one.

What people complain about

  • 2 of the logged reports flag the real gate: most summer visitors stay under five nights and never qualify at all.
  • 1 logged report sold the card to readers as helping with public transport, which it does not cover.
  • 1 logged report notes several partner discounts apply only to cash payments, easy to miss in the small print.
  • 1 logged report warns the 72 hour clock starts at pickup, so collecting it too early wastes it.

How to do it right

  • Bring your accommodation confirmation to a Tourist Information Centre: TIC Peristil inside the palace, TIC Riva on the waterfront or TIC Stobrec. Staff issue the card on the spot.
  • Check eligibility first: April through October requires a booking of five nights or more in any accommodation type; November through March requires two nights or more. The card then runs 72 hours.
  • Use the free admissions first: the Ethnographic Museum inside the palace, the Vidović Gallery and the Natural History Museum on Marjan's edge all go free under the card.
  • Stack the discounts next: 50 percent off the Archaeological Museum, Salona and the Maritime Museum, 30 percent off Meštrović, and roughly 25 percent off the palace substructures, plus 20 percent off the city theaters.
  • Carry cash for the smaller discounts: several listed partners, especially shops and restaurants, honor the card only for cash payments.

The trap to avoid

Two private lookalike products trade on nearly the same name. SplitCard is the only card issued by the Split Tourist Board; the similarly named Split City Card and Split City Pass are private discount schemes sold or given away by agencies, with different partners and terms. If a website or your host hands you a city card, check which network it actually belongs to before planning around its discount list.

What to do instead

Why this verdict

SplitCard is a strange product to price-check, because there is no price. The Split Tourist Board hands it out free at its three tourist information centers to visitors who prove a qualifying stay: five nights or more between April and October, two nights or more from November to March. It runs 72 hours, and the benefit list is modest but real: free entry to the Ethnographic Museum, the Vidović Gallery and the Natural History Museum, 50 percent off the Archaeological Museum, Salona and the Maritime Museum, 30 percent off the Meštrović Gallery, around 25 percent off the palace cellars, and 20 percent off the city theaters, plus a long tail of shop and tour discounts.

So the verdict hinges on eligibility, not math. Most summer visitors stay three or four nights and never qualify; winter city-breakers qualify easily. Even for cardholders the ceiling is low: the absolute maximum museum saving across every covered sight is around 30 EUR, and a realistic two-museum-plus-cellers morning saves closer to 15. There is no transport included, no ferries, and none of the palace interiors most visitors queue for.

The card earns a depends because it is free money for the minority who qualify and will use it, and entirely useless for everyone else. One logged report makes the sharpest point: let the card support a museum plan you already have, never create one.

Timing and tickets

Collect the card at TIC Peristil, TIC Riva or TIC Stobrec with your accommodation confirmation; the 72 hour clock starts at issue, so time pickup before a museum day. Watch the name: private lookalike products called the Split City Card and Split City Pass exist with different partners and terms. And carry cash, since several listed discounts only apply to cash payments.

Questions

Is the SplitCard free?

Yes, it cannot be bought at any price. The Split Tourist Board issues it free at the Peristil, Riva and Stobrec tourist information centers to visitors who prove a qualifying stay: five nights or more from April to October, two nights or more from November to March.

What does the SplitCard actually cover?

Free entry to three museums (Ethnographic Museum, Vidović Gallery, Natural History Museum), 50 percent off the Archaeological Museum, Salona and the Maritime Museum, 30 percent off the Meštrović Gallery, about 25 percent off the palace substructures, and 20 percent off the city theaters, plus scattered shop, tour and restaurant discounts.

Does the SplitCard cover buses or ferries?

No. It includes no transport at all: no Promet buses, no airport shuttle, no ferries. Reports sometimes bundle it into city-pass expectations, but it is purely a museum and discount card.

I am staying four nights in July. Can I get the card?

No. From April through October the minimum qualifying stay is five nights, enforced at the tourist information centers against your booking confirmation. Only November through March stays qualify at two nights.

Does the SplitCard cover Diocletian's Palace?

Partly. The palace streets are already free. The card gives about 25 percent off the ticketed cellar substructures, but the cathedral complex, bell tower and baptistery are not covered by it.

How long is the card valid?

72 hours from issue. Collect it early enough in a qualifying stay to cover the museums you plan to visit; it cannot be renewed or extended.
