The review

Vilnius in short

Vilnius keeps landing near the top of travelers' Baltic lists, and the reports agree on why: a UNESCO baroque [Old Town](/vilnius/vilnius-old-town/) you can cross on foot in twenty minutes, a cafe culture that stays local rather than tourist priced, and a self-declared artists' republic in [Uzupis](/vilnius/uzupis/) that visitors find either charming or twee. Cathedral Square anchors the city and nearly everything a short break needs sits within a fifteen-minute radius.

The caveats are seasonal and modest. November to March is dark, cold and icy underfoot, Old Town cobbles annoy wheeled luggage, and the bar streets near the cathedral quarter get loud on weekend nights. Most travelers cover the core in two days, so it is not a long standalone trip, and the hill lift to [Gediminas Tower](/vilnius/gediminas-tower/) is out of service, leaving a short but steep stone climb some flag as slippery after rain.

The heaviest sight is the [Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights](/vilnius/museum-of-occupations/), the former KGB prison that travelers consistently call sobering and essential; balance it with a [food tour](/vilnius/vilnius-food-tour/) through cepelinai and craft-beer territory or a wander across the bridges to Uzupis and its tongue-in-cheek constitution. Day trips widen it: [Trakai](/vilnius/trakai-day-trip/) and its island castle is the easy half day, and the [Hill of Crosses](/vilnius/hill-of-crosses-day-trip/) near Siauliai is the longer, stranger pilgrimage most who make it call worth the effort. Two days covers the Old Town, Uzupis and the museum, three to four with the day trips, May to September brings long evenings, and the [Vilnius or Riga](/vilnius/vilnius-or-riga/) verdict settles the Latvia question.

Go if

  • First time Baltic travelers who want a compact, walkable capital
  • Baroque architecture and church interiors, plus the view from [Gediminas hill](/vilnius/gediminas-tower/)
  • Budget city breaks: food, beer and beds stay cheap by eurozone standards
  • Twentieth century history: the [KGB prison museum](/vilnius/museum-of-occupations/) and the Jewish quarter story
  • Easy day trips to [Trakai](/vilnius/trakai-day-trip/) and the [Hill of Crosses](/vilnius/hill-of-crosses-day-trip/)

Skip if

  • A winter break: November to March is cold, dark and icy underfoot
  • Beach time, big nightlife districts or large city buzz
  • Anyone who dislikes cobbles, hills or walking everywhere
  • A long standalone trip: most travelers cover the core in two days
When to go
May to September for long evenings and outdoor tables; December brings a pretty Christmas market and real cold. January to March is for the hardy.
How long
2 days for the Old Town, Uzupis and the occupation museum; 3 to 4 with Trakai and the Hill of Crosses.
Getting around
Walk almost everywhere in the center; JUDU buses and trolleybuses cover the rest for about a euro, and ride hailing apps handle late nights cheaply.
