Zadar / The verdict

The Zadar story
Zadar is the most underrated city on the Dalmatian coast: a Roman-and-Venetian old town on a small peninsula, a seafront where the Sea Organ plays music off the waves and the Greeting to the Sun lights the dusk, and five national parks within day-trip reach. It is Split's smaller, calmer rival.

What to do instead
Why this verdict
Paklenica earns a go for anyone who can walk a few hours on stony ground. The Velika Paklenica canyon from Entrance 1 at Starigrad is the visit most travelers make: a marked path between limestone walls with climbers overhead, up to the Lugarnica forest house and the mountain hut. A Dutch family drove about 45 minutes from Zadar and reached Lugarnica in just over two hours; a solo traveler without a car found the trail quiet in September and hot but manageable. Six of the nine logged reports are positive, and none of them regretted the trip.
The negatives are about conditions and choice of route, not the canyon. Two local news reports describe the mountain rescue workload in 2026: 33 interventions by August, mostly dehydration and fractures, and a June weekend with a helicopter evacuation from the Bukova trail. That is the case for starting early and carrying water in summer. The third caution comes from a German couple who chose Mala Paklenica, the second canyon, and found it far harder than expected, with heavy scrambling suited to practiced hikers only. First visits belong in Velika Paklenica.
The price is low for what it buys. The 2026 official price list charges 10 EUR for an adult day in summer and 5 EUR in winter, with the 600 marked climbing routes included in the basic ticket for climbers.
Timing and tickets
Adults pay 10 EUR from May to September, 8 EUR in March, April and October and 5 EUR from November to February; children 7 to 18 pay half. The Parkovi Hrvatske web shop takes 5% off. The Manita peć cave is a separate 5 EUR ticket and opens to visits from April 1 to October 31. In summer, start at opening and carry more water than you think you need. Car-free travelers should check the last bus back to Zadar, or stay in Starigrad.
