Who it suits
Beginners
It dependsA beginner pass from CHF 60 a day covers the Sunnegga learning lifts and Wolli's park, but much of what a full pass buys is red runs a first-timer will not use.
Intermediates
GoThis is who Zermatt suits best: travelers describe long groomed runs, short waits outside peak weeks and the chance to ski into Italy on clear days.
Experts
It dependsThe off-piste can be excellent after a storm, but recent reports describe thin off-piste, icy groomers and black runs closed for lack of snow, and the best lines need a guide.
Families
It dependsChildren under 9 ride the lifts free and the kids ski groups start at age 3, but lessons, meals and hotels are expensive, and the village means walking or bus rides to the lifts.
Non-skiers
GoThe Gornergrat railway, the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise viewing platform, winter hiking and sledging give non-skiers full days in the mountains.

Lifts and queues
Travelers outside the busiest weeks report short waits and a fast lift system, though one writer found lift lines disorderly with people cutting in. Wind is the bigger issue: three of the thirteen reports describe wind closing high lifts or the link to Italy.
Where travelers report queues
- A Zermatt gondola when another lift was out of order (one report of a 30-minute wait in February 2025)
- The shuttle bus back to the station at the end of the day (one report)
- The high crossing to Cervinia, which closes in strong wind
Ski school and rental
The tourism office lists several ski and snowboard schools, including ZERMATTERS, European Snowsport and Connect Snowsports. Group lessons for children start at age 3, and the kids groups for ages 6 to 11 run Monday to Friday with up to 6 children per instructor. Adult and teen groups run over several days. Book ahead for school holiday weeks.
The tourism office lists ski rental shops in Zermatt and Taesch, and equipment can be reserved online before arrival. One traveler rented skis in the village and found it easy.
Official ski schools: ZERMATTERS, Connect Snowsports.

Apres-ski and off the slopes
Reports describe drinks on mountain terraces on the way down, such as a champagne bar above the village at the end of the Rothorn runs, more than a loud party scene. Mountain restaurants are a draw in themselves but expensive, with one traveler quoting about CHF 30 for most meals and CHF 10 for a beer.
Without skis
- Gornergrat railway to the Gornergrat ridge
- Matterhorn Glacier Paradise viewing platform and glacier palace at 3,883 m
- Winter hiking and snowshoe trails
- Sledging runs
- Spas and wellness in the village
Cost level and crowds
Cost level: Very high
Passes start at CHF 89 a day only in the cheapest weeks and rise with demand, group lessons for children cost CHF 885 for five full days, and travelers report high prices for meals and hotels. Free lifts for children under 9 soften it for young families.
Busiest
- Christmas to New Year
- February school holiday weeks
Quieter
- Late April, when official pass prices are at their lowest
- Early mornings: one family barely queued in February half-term by catching the 8:45 ski bus and lunching late
What it costs
- Cervinia and Valtournenche add-on to a Zermatt pass, per day: CHF 52. Official source, checked Oct 2026.
- Kids group ski lessons, ages 6 to 11, 5 full days with lunch (Connect Snowsports): CHF 885 (5 half days CHF 470). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
- Group ski lessons for teenagers and adults, 3 days (ZERMATTERS): CHF 390 (from price on the booking page). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
What travelers report
Based on 13 traveler reports (Nov 2024 to Aug 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 4 were negative.
What people like
- Long groomed runs with Matterhorn views impress intermediates.
- Lift waits are short outside the busiest weeks.
- Getting there by train into the car-free village is easy.
- Skiing over to Italy for lunch is a highlight on clear days.
What people complain about
- Meals, hotels and passes are expensive.
- Wind closes high lifts and the crossing to Italy on some days.
- Snow can be hard or icy when it has not snowed recently, and off-piste is often thin.
- Before Christmas only part of the Zermatt side runs.
How to do it right
- Buy the pass on the official lift company shop as early as you can: prices vary by date and the earliest and latest weeks are cheapest.
- Choose the Zermatt-only pass unless you plan two or more days in Italy; the official add-on for a single Cervinia day is CHF 52.
- Plan the Italy crossing for the calmest day of the forecast and check the last lift back, since wind can close the link.
- Start early at Sunnegga or the Matterhorn Express to ski before the busiest hours.
- Families with children under 9 should get the free Wolli Card, which covers the lifts.
The trap to avoid
Booking a Christmas or early December week for the full ski area: the official calendar opens Sunnegga-Rothorn and Gornergrat only on 28 November, and travelers report the Zermatt side running a reduced offer before the holidays.
Why this verdict
Zermatt splits travelers more than its reputation suggests. The reports that love it describe the same things: long groomed runs under the Matterhorn, a car-free village you reach by train, and the option to ski over to Italy for lunch. The reports that complain also agree with each other: the price of everything, wind that shuts the high lifts and the link to Cervinia, and snow that can be hard or icy when it has not snowed for a while.
That is why the verdict is it depends. For a confident intermediate with the budget, Zermatt delivers. The official 2026/27 Zermatt pass starts at CHF 89 a day and CHF 384 for six days, and those are the lowest prices of the season, sold only in November and late April; the lift company prices every other date higher. Three of the thirteen reports in our log describe wind closing high lifts or the crossing to Italy, so a week here needs slack in the plan.
Timing matters more than at most resorts. A forum regular reported that in mid-December 2024 only a small part of the Zermatt side was open while the Italian side ran almost fully. The official 2026/27 calendar matches that pattern: only the glacier runs from 1 November, and Sunnegga-Rothorn and Gornergrat open on 28 November 2026.
The skiing
The lift company lists 360 km of pistes and 52 lifts across Zermatt, Cervinia and Valtournenche, with the top station at 3,883 m on the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. Intermediates get the most from it: travelers describe smooth groomed runs, short lift waits outside peak weeks, and quiet afternoon slopes on the Rothorn.
Experts should look harder. One guided Rote Nase day in March 2026 found the off-piste only fair, a freeride skier who returned in 2025 met hard pack and icy groomers, and an early January 2026 report found many black runs closed for lack of natural snow. Good off-piste here depends on a recent storm and a guide.
Beginners have a dedicated beginner pass from CHF 60 a day for the Sunnegga learning lifts, and children under 9 ride free with the official Wolli Card, which helps families more than any discount on the main pass.
Getting there and where to stay
Zermatt is car-free. The tourism office lists about three and a half hours by train from Zurich Airport and four hours from Geneva, and drivers park in Taesch and ride a 12-minute shuttle train. Travelers who arrived by train describe it as the easy part of the trip.
Staying in the village is the simplest choice for lifts, restaurants and evenings out. Taesch and the Italian side are the ways to spend less: one couple commuted from near Brig via Taesch, and families based in Cervinia or Valtournenche skied into Zermatt on clear days. The trade is time on trains, buses or the high crossing, which wind can close.

Questions
How much is a Zermatt lift pass for 2026/27?
The official shop lists a Zermatt adult pass from CHF 89 for one day and from CHF 384 for six days. The International pass with Cervinia starts at CHF 104 and CHF 432. These are the lowest prices, available 1 to 27 November 2026 and 19 April to 2 May 2027; other dates cost more.
When does the 2026/27 ski season run?
The lift company lists the winter season from 1 November 2026 to 3 May 2027. Sunnegga-Rothorn and Gornergrat open on 28 November 2026; Sunnegga-Rothorn closes on 11 April and Gornergrat on 18 April 2027.
Do children ski free in Zermatt?
Yes, up to age 9: the official Wolli Card gives children under 9 free use of the mountain railways. Children aged 9 to 15 get 50 percent off and youths 16 to 19 get 15 percent off, and on Saturdays the Zermatt pass is free for children up to 15.
Is Zermatt good for beginners?
It works with a plan. The lift company sells a beginner pass from CHF 60 a day for the Sunnegga learning lifts and Wolli's park, but the full pass is expensive for the terrain a first-timer uses, so the beginner pass is the better buy until you ski red runs.
How do you get to Zermatt?
By train: the village is car-free. The tourism office lists about three and a half hours from Zurich Airport and four hours from Geneva. Drivers park in Taesch and take the shuttle train, which runs every 20 minutes and takes 12 minutes.
