Ski resorts / The verdict
Is Chamonix worth it for a ski trip?
It depends on your level: strong skiers get world-class steep and off-piste terrain under Mont Blanc, while families and nervous intermediates pay high prices for separate ski areas linked by buses and the train.

Who it suits
Beginners
It dependsThere are dedicated beginner areas at Les Planards, Le Savoy, La Vormaine and Plateau 2000, but only 18 of the 87 runs on Chamonix Le Pass are green, and one intermediate in the log found the blue runs few and short.
Intermediates
It dependsChamonix Le Pass has 27 blue and 28 red runs over separate areas; an Easter couple with MONT BLANC Unlimited found plenty at their level across several areas, while another intermediate found blues short and scarce, and a first-time visitor rated some reds as steep as blacks.
Experts
GoGrands Montets is the valley's freeride sector, the ESF runs guided Vallee Blanche days, freeride reports describe deep powder in early 2026, and a March 2026 off-piste course reports excellent guided days, though the Grands Montets summit lift stays closed until winter 2027/28.
Families
It dependsESF classes start at age 3 with lunch and children's club options and under-5s ski free, but the areas are spread along the valley, and the gentle Les Houches area needs the MONT BLANC Unlimited pass.
Non-skiers
GoThe Aiguille du Midi, the Montenvers train to the Mer de Glace, the Tramway du Mont Blanc, a mountain museum and cross-country trails give real non-ski days, and reports praise the town.

Lifts and queues
Reports split on lifts. A club organizer found old, patched-up chairlifts at Flegere and a first-time visitor found most lifts old, while a Les Houches visitor met no queues in early February 2026. The Grands Montets summit lift stays closed until its rebuild finishes in winter 2027/28. During the February 2026 storm, travelers describe limited upper-mountain access and 30-minute queues at the few lifts running; an Easter visitor found the pistes quiet.
Where travelers report queues
- The few lifts left running on high avalanche-risk days (one report of 30-minute queues in February 2026)
- Older fixed-grip chairlifts in the Flegere sector (one report)
Ski school and rental
ESF Chamonix lists 2026/27 group lessons for adults (6 half days for 360 euros), children's classes from age 3 at Les Planards and Le Savoy with optional lunch and children's club, private lessons from 160 euros for 2 hours, and guided Vallee Blanche days.
One report found rental shops next to the lifts with competitive prices and a discount when taking lessons at the neighboring school.
Official ski schools: ESF Chamonix.
Getting there

Apres-ski and off the slopes
An Easter visitor found plenty of bars and restaurants in town, and a video reviewer rated the town's restaurants, cafes and shops highly. On the mountain it is a different story: the same reviewer called the slope food bland and expensive, with mulled wine at 7 to 8 euros.
Without skis
- Aiguille du Midi cable car to 3,842 m (included in MONT BLANC Unlimited)
- Montenvers train to the Mer de Glace and its ice cave
- Tramway du Mont Blanc
- Musee du Mont-Blanc in Chamonix
- About 50 km of groomed cross-country trails in the valley
- ESF guided snowshoe outings
Cost level and crowds
Cost level: High
The high season 6-day adult MONT BLANC Unlimited pass runs from 350 to 499 euros by date, and ESF adult group lessons cost 360 euros for 6 half days. Reports call passes and mountain food expensive, and one group felt the pass price did not match the age of some lifts.
Busiest
- Christmas and New Year (French holidays 19 December 2026 to 4 January 2027)
- French February holidays, 6 February to 8 March 2027
Quieter
- January after 4 January
- Late season after mid March, though south-facing snow softens by afternoon
Big storms can close upper lifts and concentrate skiers on the few that run, as reports describe in February 2026.
What it costs
- ESF adult group lessons, 6 consecutive half days (13 and over): €360 (5 half days cost 304 euros; lift pass not included). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
- ESF children's group lessons, ages 5 to 12, 6 consecutive sessions: €231 (2.5 hour sessions at Les Planards or Le Savoy, 20 December 2026 to 2 April 2027; Piou Piou classes for ages 3 to 4 cost 267 euros for 6). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
- ESF private lesson, 2 hours, 1 or 2 people: €160 (210 euros for 3 or 4 people). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
What travelers report
Based on 13 traveler reports (Mar 2025 to May 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 3 were negative.
What people like
- Travelers praise the scenery under Mont Blanc, including a club organizer who disliked the lifts and prices.
- Freeriders report deep powder in the Flegere trees and on the Vallee Blanche after storms.
- An intermediate couple with the MONT BLANC Unlimited pass found enough variety across several areas, including Courmayeur.
- Travelers praise the town's restaurants and bars.
- Guided off-piste and Vallee Blanche days draw strong reports in good weather.
- An Easter visitor found the pistes quiet.
What people complain about
- The ski areas are not linked, so days start with a bus or train ride, and one group found the buses disorganized during a storm.
- Storms in February 2026 closed upper lifts and left long queues at the few that ran.
- Passes and mountain food are called expensive, and two reports describe old lifts, including patched-up chairlifts at Flegere.
- An intermediate found few blue runs, most of them short.
- A first-time visitor found some red runs as steep as blacks.
How to do it right
- Choose the pass first: buy MONT BLANC Unlimited on the official shop if you want Les Houches, Courmayeur or the Aiguille du Midi, since Chamonix Le Pass covers only the Chamonix areas.
- Stay near the Mont-Blanc Express or a lift station, and ask your lodging for the Guest Card, which gives free train travel between Servoz and Vallorcine.
- Ski the south-facing Brevent-Flegere slopes early in spring, since travelers report slushy snow in the afternoon.
- Check the lift company's opening status page each morning after big snowfalls, when reports describe upper lifts closed and long queues at the few that run.
- Book ESF group lessons ahead for children: classes run from age 3 at Les Planards and Le Savoy from 20 December 2026.
The trap to avoid
Buying Chamonix Le Pass for a week that includes Les Houches: the lift company's page excludes Les Houches-Saint-Gervais from it, so families who want the gentlest area need the MONT BLANC Unlimited pass.
Why this verdict
Chamonix splits travelers more than most big-name resorts, and the log shows it: 6 of the 13 reports are positive, 3 negative and 4 mixed. The divide is about what kind of skier you are and when you go, not about the mountains. The scenery draws praise even from critics, and the freeride reports describe deep powder in the Flegere trees and on the Vallee Blanche in early 2026. The complaints are about logistics and value: separate ski areas joined by buses and the train, old lifts, expensive passes and mountain food, and a valley that struggles when storms close the upper lifts.
That is why the overall answer is depends. For a strong skier who wants steep terrain, guided off-piste and the Vallee Blanche, the friction is the price of entry, and the expert verdict is go. For a family or a nervous intermediate, the same week means daily bus rides with kit, short blue runs, reds that one first-time visitor rated as steep as blacks, and areas that suit them sitting at opposite ends of the valley. Les Houches, the area the tourism office labels Famille Plus, is only on the MONT BLANC Unlimited pass, not on Chamonix Le Pass.
Timing matters more than usual. Three logged reports describe the February 2026 storm: limited upper-mountain access, one area carrying the whole valley, crowded buses and 30-minute lift queues, though one visitor still found powder stashes at Brevent. An Easter couple instead found quiet pistes and good spring skiing, with slush by the afternoon.
The skiing
The lift company counts 98 km and 87 runs on Chamonix Le Pass (18 green, 27 blue, 28 red, 14 black), spread over Brevent-Flegere, Grands Montets and Balme above Le Tour and Vallorcine, plus small beginner areas in the valley. Only Brevent and Flegere are linked by lift. Les Grands Montets is the serious freeride sector, but its summit lift has been out since the 2018 fire; the lift company plans the new Argentiere to Lognan gondola for Christmas 2026 and summit access in winter 2027/28. Even without it, a local writer’s late-season report describes a long, fast run down the Bochard gondola line, with a band of sharp rocks under the gondola.
The MONT BLANC Unlimited pass widens the picture to 711 km across Les Houches, the Evasion Mont Blanc area around Megeve, Courmayeur and Crans-Montana (from 2 days, subject to conditions), and adds the Aiguille du Midi and the Montenvers train. Reports show intermediates using it well: an Easter couple skied Le Tour, Brevent, Flegere, Les Houches and Courmayeur and found plenty at their level. The high season 6-day adult price runs from 350 to 499 euros by date, so it pays most for skiers who will use the extra areas and sites.
Getting there and where to stay
The tourism office puts Geneva Airport about an hour away by expressway. Inside the valley, Chamonix Le Pass includes the free valley shuttles and buses, and the Guest Card from your lodging gives free travel on the Mont-Blanc Express train between Servoz and Vallorcine. A base near a station or a lift saves the most time; one February 2026 visitor with a rental car was skiing at Les Houches by midday after landing in Geneva.
Chamonix town, at 1,035 m, suits most groups: the Planpraz gondola to Brevent leaves from the center, and travelers praise the restaurants and evening life. Argentiere, at 1,252 m, puts you under Grands Montets for freeride days, but one February 2026 report from there describes a week spent on disorganized buses during the storm. Les Houches suits families who will buy the MONT BLANC Unlimited pass, since its gentler area is not on Chamonix Le Pass.

Questions
How much is a Chamonix lift pass for 2026/27?
The lift company prices the MONT BLANC Unlimited pass by date. From 19 December 2026 to 9 April 2027 an adult pays 75 to 104 euros for 1 day and 350 to 499 euros for 6 days, with the 6-day pass from 209.40 euros in the early and late season. Children under 5 ski free, and a 3 euro hands-free card is required.
Chamonix Le Pass or MONT BLANC Unlimited?
Chamonix Le Pass covers Brevent-Flegere, Grands Montets (summit closed), Balme and the beginner areas, plus the valley buses. MONT BLANC Unlimited adds Les Houches-Saint-Gervais, the Evasion Mont Blanc area, Courmayeur, Crans-Montana, the Aiguille du Midi and the Montenvers train. When checked on 21 October 2026, the lift company's Chamonix Le Pass page did not yet show 2026/27 prices; it announced an average rise of 3.56% for the season.
Is Chamonix good for beginners?
It has dedicated beginner areas such as Les Planards, Le Savoy, La Vormaine and Plateau 2000, and the ESF runs a 3-hour beginner session at Les Planards for 86 euros outside school holidays. The wider terrain is steep, though: the lift company lists 18 green runs out of 87, and one intermediate in the log found the blue runs few and short.
Is the Grands Montets summit open?
Not yet. The lift company says the first section of the new lift, a 10-person gondola from Argentiere to Lognan, opens for the Christmas 2026 holidays, and the section to the summit follows in winter 2027/28. Until then the summit is reached only by ski touring.
How do you get around the valley without a car?
Chamonix Le Pass includes the free valley shuttles and buses, and the Guest Card from your lodging gives free travel on the Mont-Blanc Express train between Servoz and Vallorcine. One February 2026 report describes crowded, disorganized buses and stopped trains during heavy snowfall, so a base near a station or a lift helps.
