Is Cervinia worth it for a ski trip?

Yes, for intermediates, beginners and families: the official 2026/27 six-day pass is 338 euros for 157 km of mostly red and blue runs from a 2,050 m village, but wind closes lifts and the Zermatt link often enough to plan around.

Yes, for intermediates, beginners and families: the official 2026/27 six-day pass is 338 euros for 157 km of mostly red and blue runs from a 2,050 m village, but wind closes lifts and the Zermatt link often enough to plan around.

Go if

  • You ski blues and reds and want long, groomed cruising runs
  • You are bringing children born after 31 October 2018, who ski free with a paying adult
  • You want high-altitude snow early or late in the season
  • You want to ski into Switzerland on a day or two without paying Zermatt prices all week

Skip if

  • You need steep terrain for a full week on the Italian side
  • You cannot accept losing days or the Zermatt link to wind
  • You snowboard and dislike long flat traverses
  • You want lively nightlife

Who it suits

  • Beginners

    Go

A 28.50 euro beginners ticket covers the Plan Maison area and 39 km of the Italian side is blue, though one report saw weaker skiers struggle on Valtournenche sections with no easier route.

  • Intermediates

    Go

107 km of the 157 km local network is red, including the 11 km Ventina run, and reports praise the long, groomed cruising runs.

  • Experts

    It depends

Only 12 km of the local runs are black, so experts rely on the Zermatt side and the off-piste, both exposed to the wind closures four reports describe.

  • Families

    Go

Children born after 31 October 2018 ski free with a paying adult, the Mini Club takes children from 8 months to 11 years, and a family in Valtournenche found ski school worked well.

  • Snowboarders

    It depends

The tourism office lists the Indianpark snowpark, but a snowboarder held to the lower runs by wind complained of long traverses.

Lifts and queues

Reports describe the Italian side opening terrain early and lifts running quietly outside holiday weeks, with the main gondola busy first thing in New Year week. Wind is the weak point: four of 13 reports describe late openings, closed upper lifts or a closed Zermatt link.

Where travelers report queues

  • Main gondola from the village at opening in holiday weeks
  • Upper lifts and the Zermatt link on windy days
  • Ticket desks and car parks on busy weekend mornings

Ski school and rental

Scuola di Sci del Cervino publishes 2026/27 private lesson prices by season, with a top-season rate on 5 to 8 December, 26 December to 10 January, 6 to 28 February and 22 March to 4 April, plus a one-hour lesson for children up to age 5. The regional tourism office lists the Fiocco di Neve Mini Club for children from 8 months to 11 years.

The lift company lists several rental shops in Breuil-Cervinia, and Scuola di Sci del Cervino gives 15 percent off rental to lesson clients.

Official ski schools: Scuola di Sci del Cervino, Scuola di Sci Breuil, Ride'Em Ski School, Scuola Sci Valtournenche.

What travelers report

Based on 13 traveler reports (Nov 2024 to Jun 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 2 were negative.

What people like

  • Wide, well-groomed runs suit intermediates and mixed groups.
  • The Italian side opens a lot of terrain early in the season, with two December reports finding it almost fully running.
  • Food and drink draw praise in 4 of 13 reports.
  • Skiing into Zermatt on a clear day is a highlight.

What people complain about

  • Wind delays openings, shuts upper lifts or closes the Zermatt link in 4 of 13 reports.
  • Pistes can be hard and icy, especially reds in Valtournenche.
  • The main gondola and the slopes get busy in holiday weeks.
  • Experts and snowboarders find limited steep terrain and some traversing on the Italian side.

How to do it right

  • Buy the Breuil-Cervinia and Valtournenche pass and add the 52 euro Zermatt supplement at the ticket office on clear days; the international pass only pays off from three crossing days.
  • For stays of four nights or more until 4 December 2026 or from 5 April 2027, book direct with a participating hotel to get 30 percent off a 4 to 7 day pass.
  • Check the wind forecast and the official lift status each morning before you commit to Plateau Rosa or a Swiss day.
  • Leave for Zermatt early and head back well before the lifts close; one family missed the last lift and returned by bus.
  • Start first-timers on the 28.50 euro beginners ticket around Plan Maison before buying a full pass.

The trap to avoid

Paying for the international pass for the whole week, then losing crossing days to wind: four of the 13 reports describe wind closing lifts or the link to Zermatt.

Why this verdict

The reports lean positive on the skiing and split on the weather. Of the 13 reports, five are positive, six are mixed and two are negative. The praise is consistent: wide, well-groomed runs, early-season terrain that opens quickly, and food that travelers enjoy on and off the slopes. Two December reports describe the Italian side running almost fully while Zermatt had little open, and a late May visitor still skied the Ventina run to the village.

Wind is the main problem, and it is not rare. Four of the 13 reports describe wind shutting lifts, delaying openings or closing the link to Zermatt, including one February week when the lifts opened after 10 am on all six days. The high terrain that keeps the snow reliable is the same terrain the wind closes. That is why the verdict is go for beginners, intermediates and families, who can ski the lower and middle runs on most days, and depends for experts, who need the high lifts and the Swiss side to fill a week.

Price helps the case. The official 2026/27 six-day adult pass for Breuil-Cervinia and Valtournenche is 338 euros, against 464.50 euros for the international pass with Zermatt. Children born after 31 October 2018 ski free when an adult buys a pass at the same time. A crossing-day plan using the 52-euro Zermatt supplement beats the international pass for one or two Swiss days and costs more from the third, which matters when wind can cancel a planned crossing.

The skiing

The regional tourism office lists 157 km of runs on the Italian side, linked with Zermatt for a total of 352 km. Most of it is red: 107 km red, 39 km blue and 12 km black. That suits intermediates well, and reports praise the long cruising runs and the 11 km Ventina descent from Plateau Rosa. Experts find less on the Italian side, and the steeper terrain is across the border. Beginners have a dedicated ticket at 28.50 euros covering the Plan Maison area, though one report saw weaker skiers struggle on Valtournenche sections with no easier route.

Snow quality varies with the season. A Christmas report found the Valtournenche reds hard and icy, and a late February skier noted a hard base in the afternoon. An end-of-season video describes slush low down and good snow above 2,500 m. Snowboarders should know that a rider confined to the lower runs by wind complained of traversing.

Getting there and where to stay

The lift company lists Turin, Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate and Geneva as the nearby airports, with transfers by bus, taxi or rental car. The nearest station is Chatillon-Saint-Vincent, with a bus up to Breuil-Cervinia and Valtournenche, and drivers leave the A5 there for the final 28 km on the regional road. A car helps on windy days, because the official tariff lets passes of three days or more be used in another Aosta Valley ski area within the same dates.

Breuil-Cervinia itself sits at 2,050 m with lifts from the village, so most skiers stay there. Valtournenche is lower and quieter, linked by gondola, and one family based there with children in ski school found that the midday pickup made Swiss days hard to fit in. Booking direct with a participating hotel for at least four nights in the early or late promo weeks takes 30 percent off a four to seven day pass.
