- You are traveling with young children, who ski free if born in 2021 or later
- You want a lively village with events and an easy train ride in
Skip if
- You want to ski from your door, since the village sits at 630 m and the lifts start with cable cars
- You want big off-piste days without a guide
- Your only dates are late March or April and you dislike soft afternoon snow
- You hate queues and can only ski the Penkenbahn at peak times in February
Who it suits
Beginners
It dependsThe lift company lists four exercise areas and KinderLand Horberg, and small groups of at most 6 cost 130 EUR a day, but beginners ride a cable car up and down daily and one learner met long peak-time queues.
Intermediates
GoThis is Mayrhofen's strength: 142 km locally and 548 km on the Superskipass, with reports praising wide Ahorn cruising and Penken reds, though spring afternoons turn soft.
Experts
It dependsThe Harakiri, at a 78 percent gradient, is the headline steep run, but one advanced skier found the off-piste limited, while the Superskipass adds the Hintertux Glacier and the rest of the valley.
Families
GoChildren born in 2021 or later ski free with an adult, Habeler takes kids from age 6 in groups of at most 6, and a family reviewer said the children loved the snow parks; the catch is the daily cable car commute.
Snowboarders
GoThe PenkenPark hosts The BRITS, a snowboarder on a January 2026 club trip found plenty of variety, and a Christmas reviewer found the parks open in December.

The lift company's winter guide lists 142 km and 61 lifts across Ahorn, Penken, Horberg, Finkenberg, Rastkogel and Eggalm, between 630 m and 2,500 m. Its own factsheet covers only the 66 km it runs itself (23 km blue, 28 km red, 15 km black, 61 km with snowmaking), so no split is given for the full 142 km. The 548 km and 180 lifts are the official Superskipass figures; the Hintertux Glacier is on that pass but not in the local area.

Lifts and queues
Three of the 12 logged reports praise modern, fast lifts with short waits, and a December 2024 reviewer said the new Penkenbahn gondola has largely cut peak-time congestion. The pinch point is getting up and down: a family in February 2025 half term found large Penkenbahn queues from about 8:30 am and again around 4:30 pm, with waits of up to about 30 minutes.
Where travelers report queues
- Penkenbahn up from about 8:30 am in peak weeks (one family report)
- Penkenbahn down from about 4:30 pm, since no piste runs from the Penken into the village
- Penkenbahn parking: none at the station, so the lift company sends drivers to the Horbergbahn in Schwendau
Ski school and rental
The tourism office lists several ski schools. Skischule Habeler publishes 2026/27 small-group courses of 4 hours a day with at most 6 people, for adults and for children from age 6. SMT runs a children's area with a conveyor and magic carpets next to its kids' restaurant, and the lift company lists exercise areas on the Ahorn, Penken, Lärchwald and Mösl and KinderLand Horberg at the Horbergbahn valley station. A learner who took lessons with Mayrhofen 3000 in February 2025 found the English-speaking instructors helpful.
The tourism office lists rental shops in the village and at the Horbergbahn and Möslbahn valley stations, some bookable online. School course prices exclude lift passes and rental.
Official ski schools: Skischule Habeler, Skischule Mayrhofen 3000, Skischule SMT Mayrhofen.
Getting there
| Airport | Distance | Transfer time | How |
|---|---|---|---|
| Innsbruck Airport (INN) | Not published | Varies | The closest airport: continue by train to Jenbach and the Zillertalbahn to Mayrhofen, or by road. One reviewer named the transfer as the main drawback when not flying into Innsbruck. |
| Munich Airport (MUC) | Not published | Varies | By hire car or train via Jenbach; one family drove from Munich in a hire car, and a winter storm in January 2026 diverted one group via Munich onto replacement buses. |
| Salzburg Airport (SZG) | Not published | Varies | By road or by train via Jenbach and the Zillertalbahn. |
By rail: Mayrhofen station is the end of the Zillertalbahn from Jenbach. The Zillertal Superskipass covers the ski buses and most public transport in the valley, and free ski buses serve the Ahornbahn, Penkenbahn, Horbergbahn and Möslbahn.
Car: Not needed.
Where to stay
Mayrhofen village
Most travelers: the Penkenbahn and Ahornbahn start in or near the village, with restaurants, bars and the train station on foot.
Ski days start and end with a cable car ride from the village; one review called lodging near the gondola expensive.

Hippach and Schwendau
Drivers and families: the Horbergbahn in Schwendau has free parking and KinderLand Horberg at its valley station.
Finkenberg

Tux-Vorderlanersbach
Higher lodging next to the Rastkogel lifts and closer to the Hintertux Glacier.

Apres-ski and off the slopes
Travelers describe a sociable evening scene more than a single famous bar: a livery company group mixed a brewery visit with banquets, a ski club group built its evenings around its hotel's spa and dinners, and one family reviewer found restaurants decent value. The official calendar adds events such as The BRITS freestyle championships at the PenkenPark (13 to 20 March 2027) and the Snowbombing festival (4 to 9 April 2027), which fill the village.
Without skis
- Winter hiking paths on the Penken and Filzenkogel
- SkyRide panorama deck on the Ahornbahn (surcharge)
- Birds of prey shows at the Eagle's Stage on the Ahorn
- PistenBock toboggan run
- Paragliding from the Penken
- Pedestrian Flexi tickets for 2 to 4 days of cable car rides
Cost level and crowds
Cost level: Moderate
An adult day costs 82 EUR, but a 6-day Superskipass at 399 EUR covers 548 km across the valley plus ski buses and most public transport, and children born 2021 or later ski free with an adult. Small-group lessons run 290 EUR for 3 days, and reports call lodging near the gondola and the trip overall expensive.
Busiest
- Christmas to New Year
- February half-term weeks, when one family met 30-minute Penkenbahn waits
Quieter
- Before about 8:30 am at the Penkenbahn, per a family who skied February half term
Crowding in the logged reports centers on the Penkenbahn at the start and end of the day, not on the slopes.
What it costs
- Small-group ski course for beginners (max 6), 3 days of 4 hours, adult (Skischule Habeler): €290 (1 day 130 EUR, 2 days 230 EUR; 2026/27 prices). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
- MAX6 kids ski course for beginners from age 6, 3 days of 4 hours (Skischule Habeler): €290 (1 day 130 EUR; 2026/27 prices). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
- Ahornbahn or Penkenbahn round trip for pedestrians, adult: €40 (34 EUR with the guest card; 17 EUR for children born 2012 to 2020). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
What travelers report
Based on 12 traveler reports (Dec 2024 to May 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 0 were negative.
What people like
- Modern, fast lifts with short waits outside the peak rush.
- Varied terrain, from wide Ahorn cruising to steep Penken reds and blacks.
- Reliable snow at Christmas and New Year, with the Hintertux Glacier as a fallback.
- Snow parks and family facilities that children enjoy.
What people complain about
- Snow turns soft, slushy or carved up in the afternoon in warm spells and spring.
- Penkenbahn queues at peak times in the morning and late afternoon.
- No piste from the Penken into the village, so the day ends in a cable car.
- Trips and lodging near the gondola are expensive.
- Transfers can be long or disrupted when not flying into Innsbruck.
How to do it right
- Buy a 1-day Mayrhofen pass only for a single day; from 2 days the official shop sells the Zillertal Superskipass, which also covers the ski buses and most public transport in the valley.
- Ride the Penkenbahn before about 8:30 am or use the Horbergbahn in Schwendau, where the lift company points drivers because the Penkenbahn has no parking.
- Send beginners and young children to the Ahorn exercise areas or KinderLand Horberg, and book small-group lessons ahead.
- Plan a day at the Hintertux Glacier on the Superskipass, especially early or late in the season.
- In spring, ski the higher runs in the morning and come down by cable car before the lower slopes soften.
The trap to avoid
Booking a 6-day Mayrhofen-only pass: the official shop sells the local pass for 1 to 1.5 days only, and from 2 days you buy the Superskipass, so budget 399 EUR for an adult week.
Why this verdict
Mayrhofen earns a go for the people it suits best: intermediates, snowboarders and families who want a big, varied area and a lively village. The 12 reports in the log split cleanly. None is outright negative, four are positive and eight are mixed, and the mixed ones mostly complain about the same two things: snow that softens in the afternoon, and the cable car commute that frames every day.
The soft snow is the most common complaint. Four of the 12 reports describe slopes turning slushy, carved up or poorly kept by afternoon in warm spells or spring, from a German reviewer in March 2025 to a snowboarder in mid-March 2026 who advised coming earlier in the season. That is a timing problem more than a resort problem, and a December or January week avoids most of it. Two reports from the Christmas and New Year period describe plenty of snow, with the Hintertux Glacier a short bus ride away as a fallback.
The commute is structural. The village sits at 630 m, and travelers note there is no piste from the Penken back into it, so the day starts and ends at the Penkenbahn. A father learning to ski in February 2025 half term met queues from about 8:30 am and again around 4:30 pm, with waits of up to about 30 minutes, while a December 2024 reviewer said the new gondola has largely cut congestion. Timing your ride, or starting from the Horbergbahn in Schwendau, deals with most of it.
Price is the third factor, and here Mayrhofen does well. The 6-day Superskipass costs 399 EUR for an adult and covers every lift in the Zillertal, the ski buses and most public transport in the valley, and children born in 2021 or later ski free with an adult.
The skiing
The lift company lists 142 km and 61 lifts across Ahorn, Penken, Horberg, Finkenberg, Rastkogel and Eggalm, between 630 m and 2,500 m. Reports describe two characters: the Ahorn with wide, gentle cruising and a long valley run, and the Penken with steeper reds and blacks, the PenkenPark and the Harakiri, which the lift company lists at a 78 percent gradient. A December 2024 reviewer called the Harakiri fun on fresh snow and tough when icy.
Beyond the local area, the Superskipass adds the rest of the valley’s 548 km, including the Hintertux Glacier, which two reports single out for its snow. Experts get less: one advanced skier found the off-piste limited, and a guide is the safer route to anything beyond the pistes.
Beginners have exercise areas on several mountains and KinderLand Horberg, and Skischule Habeler runs groups of at most 6 at 130 EUR a day. The catch is logistics: a cable car up and down each day, with gear.
Getting there and where to stay
Innsbruck is the closest airport, and one reviewer named the transfer as the main drawback when flying elsewhere. Trains run via Jenbach on the Zillertalbahn to Mayrhofen station, so a car is not needed in resort; free ski buses link the four valley lifts. Weather can still disrupt arrival: a group in January 2026 was rerouted via Munich onto replacement buses.
Stay in Mayrhofen village for the bars, restaurants and both main cable cars on foot. Hippach and Schwendau suit drivers, with free parking at the Horbergbahn, while Finkenberg and Tux-Vorderlanersbach are quieter bases with their own lifts into the same area.

Questions
How much is a Mayrhofen lift pass for 2026/27?
The official price list shows 82 EUR for an adult day on the Mayrhofen ski area and 37 EUR for a child born 2012 to 2020. From 2 days you buy the Zillertal Superskipass: 163.50 EUR for 2 days and 399 EUR for 6 days for an adult. Children born in 2021 or later ski free with an accompanying adult.
When does the 2026/27 season run?
The Horbergbahn and Penkenbahn run from 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027. The Ahornbahn and Möslbahn open on 12 December 2026 and close on 4 April 2027, and the lift company notes that weather or demand can bring a later start or earlier end.
Can you ski back to Mayrhofen village?
Not from the Penken: travelers note there is no piste from the Penken into the village, so you ride the Penkenbahn down. The Ahorn has a valley run of about 5.5 km, which the lift company lists in its winter guide.
Is Mayrhofen good for beginners?
It works with a plan. The lift company lists exercise areas on the Ahorn, Penken, Lärchwald and Mösl and KinderLand Horberg at the Horbergbahn valley station, but beginners still ride a cable car up and down each day, and one learner reported long Penkenbahn queues at peak times in February.
Is the Hintertux Glacier included?
Yes, on the Zillertal Superskipass, which the official price list says is valid for all lifts in the Zillertal, glacier included. The 1-day Mayrhofen pass covers the Ahorn, Penken, Rastkogel and Eggalm only.
How do you get to Mayrhofen?
Most travelers fly into Innsbruck, Munich or Salzburg and continue by train via Jenbach on the Zillertalbahn or by road. One reviewer named the transfer as the main drawback unless you fly into Innsbruck.
