Is Laax worth it for a ski trip?

It depends: for snowboarders, freestyle skiers and intermediates who book an early, non-holiday week, Laax delivers a big, modern area and the snow parks reports praise most; bought late for Christmas, its dynamic prices and thin-snow risk make it a poor deal.

It depends

It depends: for snowboarders, freestyle skiers and intermediates who book an early, non-holiday week, Laax delivers a big, modern area and the snow parks reports praise most; bought late for Christmas, its dynamic prices and thin-snow risk make it a poor deal.

Go if

  • You snowboard or ski park and want the snow parks and halfpipe
  • You ski blue and red runs and want long cruising across a big area
  • You can book an early January or late-season week in the official shop
  • You want to reach the slopes by train and bus from Zurich

Skip if

  • You can only go at Christmas or New Year and have not booked yet
  • You want lots of steep black runs
  • Apres-ski nightlife is a big part of your trip
  • Your budget is tight

Who it suits

  • Beginners

    It depends

Separate beginner tickets and 85 km of blue runs help, but the higher blues take several lifts to reach and one reviewer found that hard for a first-timer; it is a pricey place to learn.

  • Intermediates

    Go

The lift company lists 85 km of blue and 76 km of red runs, including the long descent from La Siala to Flims, and reports praise the long groomed runs and quiet slopes outside peak weeks.

  • Experts

    It depends

Only 15 km of black runs, but 33 km of signed freeride routes and glacier terrain reward strong skiers when snow is good; thin-snow seasons narrow the options.

  • Families

    It depends

LAAX School offers lessons and year-round childcare, children 6 to 12 ski at much lower prices, and families praise the activities, but holiday-week passes are expensive and the three villages are spread out.

  • Snowboarders

    Go

Five snow parks, the halfpipe and freeride routes make this the group the reports praise most, with riders calling the terrain and parks the reason to come.

Lifts and queues

Reports from outside the Christmas period describe an efficient lift system with small queues, including one from English half term. The complaints cluster around December 2024, when two reviewers describe lifts stopping repeatedly for technical faults, and a busy April 2026 day with long waits at a few lifts. The official shop sells Blueline tickets and upgrades for priority entrances.

Where travelers report queues

  • La Siala chairlift on busy days (one report, April 2026)
  • Lavadinas in the morning (one report)
  • The Startgels gondola in the morning (one report)
  • The two old drag lifts at the top of the area (one report of a slow ride)

Ski school and rental

LAAX School, run by the lift company, teaches ski, snowboard and cross-country lessons from bases in Flims, Laax and Falera and runs childcare that is open all year, with bookings due by 4 pm the day before. The school page does not publish 2026/27 lesson prices, so ask the school office. One family booked a private instructor for two mornings and found it worked well for the children.

The lift company pages do not publish 2026/27 rental prices; reserve equipment ahead for Christmas and February weeks.

Official ski schools: LAAX School.

Getting there

AirportDistanceTransfer timeHow
Zurich Airport (ZRH)Not publishedVariesTrain to Chur, then the PostAuto bus to the Laax GR, Bergbahnen stop; the lift company puts the whole trip at under two hours.

By rail: The nearest main rail station is Chur. The PostAuto bus runs from Chur to the Laax lift station, a ride the lift company puts at 30 minutes; there is also a bus link from Ilanz on the Rhaetian Railway.

Car: Not needed.

Where to stay

Laax Murschetg

Mostly ski in, ski out1100 m

Snowboarders, park riders and anyone who wants the shortest walk to the main Laax lifts.

A modern base complex; reports describe it as quiet in the evening.

Flims

Lift or bus to the slopes1100 m

Families and travelers who want a larger village with shops, restaurants and its own lift station.

Falera

Lift or bus to the slopes

Travelers who want the smallest of the three villages; the official beginner ticket covers the Laax/Falera learning area.

Apres-ski and off the slopes

Reports describe a relaxed scene with little partying: a creator who stayed at the Laax base found no typical big apres-ski, and an intermediate snowboarder felt the apres could be livelier. One family highlights evening activities instead, such as dinner at a mountain hut followed by night sledging.

Without skis

  • Indoor Freestyle Academy with trampolines and airbags
  • Night sledging from Foppa toward Flims
  • Winter walks and snowshoe routes around the Rhine Gorge
  • Ami Sabi snow area for young children

Cost level and crowds

Cost level: High

The official shop listed CHF 331 for six adult days in mid-January 2027 but CHF 531 from 27 December 2026, so timing and booking early decide most of the cost. Reports call the pass and mountain restaurants expensive, and Swiss lodging adds to it.

Busiest

  • Christmas to New Year
  • February, when Swiss school holiday weeks run

Quieter

  • January after the first week, when the official shop lists some of its lowest main-season prices
  • April, when the official shop lists its lowest 6-day prices of the season

A parent who visits at English February half term finds Laax far quieter than French resorts that week, and another reviewer found small queues then.

What travelers report

Based on 12 traveler reports (Dec 2024 to Apr 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 4 were negative.

What people like

  • The snow parks, halfpipe and freeride routes draw the strongest praise, especially from snowboarders.
  • The area is big and varied, with long groomed blue and red runs.
  • Outside Christmas, reports describe small lift queues and uncrowded slopes, including at English half term.
  • Families rate the ski school and activities such as night sledging and the indoor Freestyle Academy.

What people complain about

  • Dynamic pricing makes passes expensive in holiday weeks and when bought late.
  • Lift faults and long waits at some lifts spoil the day, especially around Christmas 2024.
  • Thin snow can leave much of the area closed early in the season and hits the lower Flims runs in warm winters.
  • The apres-ski and base villages are quiet compared with big party resorts.
  • Mountain restaurants are expensive.

How to do it right

  • Buy your pass in the official LAAX shop as early as you can; it prices each ski date separately, so compare a few start dates.
  • Compare start dates: on 10 October 2026 the shop listed six adult days at CHF 318 from 7 January 2027 and CHF 331 from 11 January, against CHF 513 from 7 February and CHF 531 from 27 December 2026.
  • Check open lifts and runs in the official live status before buying an early-season day, since snow cover decides how much of the area is open.
  • Take the train to Chur and the PostAuto bus to the Laax lift station rather than renting a car.
  • For first-timers, use the official beginner ticket for the Laax/Falera or Flims learning areas instead of a full pass.

The trap to avoid

Buying the pass at the counter on the day: the official shop prices by date and demand, and one reviewer paid about 105 euros on the day for a ticket that had shown at about 75 euros online a month earlier.

Why this verdict

The Laax reports split sharply. Five of the 12 reports are positive, and they come from people who hit good snow outside the busiest days: a February afternoon in the Zurich holidays with grippy snow and little crowding, an English half-term week with small queues and uncrowded slopes, and riders who rate the parks and the variety of terrain highly. Four reports are negative, and three of those come from the Christmas period. Two reviewers in late December 2024 describe lifts stopping repeatedly for technical faults, and a regular who skied Christmas 2025 found only about 70 of roughly 220 km of runs open because of thin snow and limited snowmaking.

Price is the thread that runs through the complaints. The official shop sets a price for each ski date, so the same pass can cost very different amounts. On 10 October 2026 the shop listed CHF 331 for six adult days from 11 January 2027 and CHF 531 for six days from 27 December 2026. A Dutch skier paid about 105 euros at the counter for a day that had shown at about 75 euros online a month earlier. That is why the verdict depends on when you go and when you buy: an early-booked January or late-season week is a different deal from a holiday week bought late.

The other filter is what you ski. Laax is built for snowboarders, freestyle skiers and confident intermediates, and the reports that rave come mostly from those groups. Strong skiers looking for steep, difficult runs and apres-ski fans should weigh what the reports say about a quiet base and modest black terrain.

The skiing

The lift company counts 216 km of slopes and 30 lifts between 1,100 m in the valley and 3,018 m on the Vorab glacier, and says 70% of the slopes lie between 2,000 and 3,000 m. Its breakdown is 85 km blue, 76 km red, 15 km black, 33 km of marked freeride routes and 7 km of snow parks. That makes the red and blue cruising the core of the area, with the long run from La Siala down to Flims as a signature descent. The five snow parks and the halfpipe are the resort’s strongest draw in the reports, and the video report singles out the signed freeride routes. The black-run total is small for an area this size, so experts will spend their best days on the freeride routes or with a guide.

Snow is the main risk. Two reports describe thin cover and closures in warmer winters, and the lower runs to Flims are the first to suffer. Lift waits show up in two forms: lift faults in December 2024 and long queues at La Siala, Lavadinas and Startgels on a busy April day. The official shop also sells Blueline tickets with priority entrances for busy days.

Getting there and where to stay

Laax is straightforward to reach without a car. The lift company says the trip from Zurich Airport takes under two hours, by train to Chur and then the PostAuto bus to the Laax lift station, a ride it puts at 30 minutes. Stay in Laax Murschetg for the shortest walk to the main lifts and the parks, in Flims for a larger village with its own lift station, or in Falera, the smallest of the three villages. One reviewer found the buses between villages infrequent in the late afternoon, so check the last bus times if you stay away from the lifts.

Questions

How much is a Laax lift pass for 2026/27?

Prices are dynamic and set per ski date in the official shop. On 10 October 2026 it listed CHF 59.50 for an adult day on 11 January 2027 and CHF 331 for six adult days from that date, but CHF 531 for six days from 27 December 2026. Prices can change as the date approaches.

Is Laax good for beginners?

The official shop sells separate beginner tickets for the Laax/Falera and Flims learning areas, and the lift company lists 85 km of blue runs. LAAX School runs ski lessons and childcare. One reviewer found that reaching the higher blue runs takes several lifts, so a first week is best spent near the learning areas.

Is Laax a good choice for snowboarders?

Yes, this is where the reports are most positive. The lift company lists five snow parks and the halfpipe, and riders praise the parks, the variety of terrain and the signed freeride routes. Reports describe the base as quiet in the evening.

How reliable is the snow?

The lift company says 70% of the slopes lie between 2,000 and 3,000 m. Reports from Christmas 2025 describe only about 70 km of runs open after a thin start, and a regular visitor says warmer winters bring closures on the lower Flims runs. Check the official live status before booking a short early-season trip.

How do you get to Laax without a car?

Take the train to Chur and the PostAuto bus to the Laax GR, Bergbahnen stop. The lift company says the bus ride takes 30 minutes and that Laax is under two hours from Zurich Airport.

Do young children ski free?

The official shop sells child tickets for ages 6 to 12, for example CHF 116 for six days from 11 January 2027. It does not publish a ticket or price for children under 6, so ask the lift company before you travel.
