The Amalfi Coast story
Fifty kilometres of cliffs between Sorrento and Salerno make this Italy's most famous shoreline: pastel towns stacked vertically above the water, a corniche road travelers call equal parts spectacular and terrifying, and the anchor trio of Positano, Amalfi and hilltop Ravello, with Sorrento just off the coast as the practical mainland base.

The options
Pompeii Express Go
Most visitors who want the ancient city in a morning or a few hours.
Good
- Covers the ancient city, which is what most visitors come to see.
- The cheapest full-price official ticket at 20 EUR.
- You can still add the villas later with an 8 EUR supplement at Porta Ercolano.
Watch out
- Excludes the Villa of the Mysteries and the other suburban villas.
- Named and timed, so plans are less flexible in peak season.
- Gives no interpretation on its own, and reports say much of the site is hard to read without context.
Pompeii Plus It depends
You want the Villa of the Mysteries frescoes and have five or more hours on site.
Good
- Adds the Villa of the Mysteries, Villa of Diomedes and Villa Regina at Boscoreale, with the shuttle.
- Travelers who reached the Villa of the Mysteries call its frescoes a highlight.
- Costs 3 EUR less than Express plus the separate villas supplement.
Watch out
- The villa sits outside the main walls, which adds a long walk at the end of a hot day.
- Wasted if you reach the villas route after its last entry (5:30 pm in summer, 3:30 pm in winter).
- Fewer Plus places per slot than Express under the park's time-slot limits.
Guided tour with Express entry Go
A first visit where you want the stories behind the ruins, then time to explore alone.
Good
- Travelers who took a guide say it made the visit far better than an audio guide.
- The park's own 1.5-hour tour costs 8 EUR on top of the ticket.
- Guides know which houses are open and how to route around crowds.
Watch out
- Independent guide prices vary and are agreed with the guide, not set by the park.
- Small-group tours and park tour seats can sell out in peak season.
- Some travelers prefer exploring at their own pace with the audio guide.

Only local repeat visitors who arrive before opening and accept crowds.
Good
- Entry to all park sites is free on the first Sunday of each month.

Watch out
- News coverage reports that a free Sunday in May 2025 hit the cap and entry was suspended for hours.
- Forum reports describe very long waits in the sun on free Sundays.
- Crowds make the busiest houses slow to see.

What travelers report
Based on 13 traveler reports (Dec 2024 to Sep 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 1 was negative.
What people like
- Travelers who hired a guide, including shared tours joined at the gate, say it brought the ruins to life far better than an audio guide.
- The Express ticket covers the ancient city that most visitors come to see.
- Travelers who added the Villa of the Mysteries praise its large, vivid frescoes.
- Off-season visitors report walking up to the ticket office and getting in quickly.
What people complain about
- Entry queues and bottlenecks at the gates, worst on free first Sundays.
- Heat and lack of shade make midday visits in summer exhausting.
- Official-looking ticket sellers near the station and touts outside the gates push unofficial tickets.
- The official online shop is clunky, and advance tickets can appear late for some months.
How to do it right
- Buy the Pompeii Express ticket on the official Vivaticket shop linked from the park site, in the name of each visitor.
- Pick a morning slot; from 16 March to 14 October the park admits up to 15,000 people from 9:00 to 1:00 pm and 5,000 from 1:00 to 5:30 pm.
- Carry the passport or ID that matches the name on each ticket.
- Add the park's 8 EUR guided tour or a licensed guide on a first visit, then explore on your own afterward.
- Choose Pompeii Plus, or pay the 8 EUR villas supplement at Porta Ercolano, only if you want the Villa of the Mysteries and can reach the villas route before its last entry.
- Leave large bags at the paid luggage storage at Porta Marina or Piazza Anfiteatro; the park bars bags larger than 30 x 30 x 15 cm.
The trap to avoid
Buying tickets from sellers near the Pompei Scavi station who present themselves as the ticket office. The official ticket offices are only inside the archaeological area, at Porta Marina, Piazza Anfiteatro and Piazza Esedra.
What to do instead
Why this verdict
The reports agree more on how to visit than on which ticket to buy. The reports back the Express ticket: forum posters point out that it covers the ancient city most people come for, and bloggers who know the site call it enough for many visitors. The real split is between travelers who went with a guide and those who went alone. A forum thread weighing a guided tour against self-guiding mostly recommended a guide, or at least a booked ticket, to make sense of the site. A minority, including one creator who spent two days on site, prefer their own pace. That is why a guided tour on top of Express is the runner-up: the park’s own 8 EUR tour now makes it a small extra cost on a first visit.
Pompeii Plus is a narrower call. Travelers who reached the Villa of the Mysteries praise its frescoes, but the villa sits outside the walls and the route has its own last entry. For a morning visit from the coast, Express plus the 8 EUR villas supplement at Porta Ercolano keeps the choice open until you see how your legs and the heat hold up. Plus is the better buy if you know you want the villa, since it costs less than Express plus the supplement.
The free first Sunday is the common choice that most visitors should skip. News coverage and forum posts describe the May 2025 free day hitting the daily cap, with entry paused and long waits in the sun. The 20 EUR saved does not make up for that.
Timing and tickets
Tickets are named and timed, and the park takes three times as many morning entries as afternoon ones in the high season, so morning slots are the ones to secure early. One traveler whose cards were refused online was told by the park to buy in person, but a July report describes a queue stretching into the street at 11am, so advance booking matters most from spring to autumn. Complaints about touts and official-looking sellers near the station are common enough that the safest rule is to buy online from the official shop or at the ticket offices inside the site. The park has announced a single 25 EUR ticket from January 2027, so check the official page if your visit falls after that date.

Questions
Do you need to book Pompeii tickets in advance?
The park caps entry at 20,000 a day, with timed morning and afternoon limits from mid-March to mid-October, and recommends buying in advance. Forum travelers visiting off-season report buying at the gate with short waits, so booking matters most from spring to autumn.
Does the Express ticket include the Villa of the Mysteries?
No. The official site says Express covers only the ancient city. You reach the Villa of the Mysteries with Pompeii Plus, or by adding an 8 EUR supplement, card only, at the Porta Ercolano start of the villas route.
Does the park offer its own guided tour?
Yes. Since 2 March 2026 the park runs a 1.5-hour guided tour on two themes, Civic Pompeii from Porta Marina Superiore and Daily Pompeii from Piazza Anfiteatro. It costs 8 EUR plus the entrance ticket, is free for children under 10, and leftover seats are sold at the ticket offices.
Do I need ID to enter Pompeii?
Tickets are personal and carry the holder's name. The park's announcement for 2027 confirms named tickets for every ticket type, with a valid ID shown at entry, so carry the ID that matches each ticket.
Are Pompeii tickets changing in 2027?
Yes. The park has announced a single 25 EUR ticket from 1 January 2027, valid 30 days with one entry to each park site. The daily cap of 20,000 and named tickets stay.
Can I leave and come back on the same ticket?
No. The official ticket page says each ticket is valid for one entry and does not allow exit and re-entry, so plan lunch inside the site or at the end of your visit.
