Amalfi Coast / The verdict
Is Mount Vesuvius worth it?
Yes, for most visitors on a clear day: the official crater ticket is 10 EUR and the walk is short, but tickets are timed and sold only online, and cloud or steep loose gravel can spoil it.

The Amalfi Coast story
Fifty kilometres of cliffs between Sorrento and Salerno make this Italy's most famous shoreline: pastel towns stacked vertically above the water, a corniche road travelers call equal parts spectacular and terrifying, and the anchor trio of Positano, Amalfi and hilltop Ravello, with Sorrento just off the coast as the practical mainland base.
The verdict in 30 seconds
Go
Yes, for most visitors on a clear day: the official crater ticket is 10 EUR and the walk is short, but tickets are timed and sold only online, and cloud or steep loose gravel can spoil it.
Go if
- You can book a timed crater ticket online before you travel
- You can walk a steep, loose gravel path for about 4 km round trip
- You are staying in Naples, Sorrento or near Pompeii and can keep a clear morning free
Skip if
- Cloud or rain is forecast for the summit on your only free day
- You expect to see lava or a dramatic eruption scene
- You need step-free access or struggle on steep, uneven ground
What it costs
- Gran Cono crater trail, full price: €10 (the park page lists 11.68 EUR at checkout on the official online seller). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
- Gran Cono crater trail, reduced: €8 (under 25s and residents of the 13 park towns, with ID; 9.55 EUR at checkout; free under 6 with an adult). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
- Ercolano town shuttle from the 800 m parking area to the trailhead (each way): €1 (run by the Comune di Ercolano, about 4 minutes). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
What travelers report
Based on 10 traveler reports (Oct 2024 to Oct 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 2 were negative.
What people like
- Clear-day views over the Bay of Naples, Capri and Pompeii are the main reward.
- Travelers describe the steaming crater as mesmerizing.
- The walk is short enough to pair with Pompeii or Herculaneum on the same day.
- Timed entry makes sense once you see that a single narrow path circles the rim, one visitor found.
What people complain about
- Tickets are hard to get in busy periods, and last-minute sales depend on weak Wi-Fi at the gate.
- The rim is cold and windy even on warm days below.
- Closures come at short notice, as when a wildfire shut every trail in August 2025, and some find the crater itself underwhelming.
- The steep, loose gravel path has no shade and tires some walkers.
- Chaotic parking and inadequate services at the trailhead.
How to do it right
- Buy your timed ticket on the park's official online seller, which releases slots 30 days ahead.
- Match your transport to your slot: the gate lets standard ticket holders in from 2 hours before to 2 hours after the time on the ticket.
- Reach the trailhead by the EAV public bus from Pompei, a private shuttle from Ercolano Scavi, or by car to the 800 m parking area and the town shuttle.
- Check the summit forecast the day before; the park closes ticketing and the trail from an orange weather alert upward.
- Wear shoes with grip and bring a warm layer and water; the path is loose gravel and the park notes that the trailhead area temporarily has no public toilets.
The trap to avoid
Arriving without a ticket and counting on the last-minute release. Only 10 last-minute tickets per slot go on sale 30 minutes before, only over the Wi-Fi near the entrance, and they are named to the buyer.
What to do instead
Why this verdict
The positive and mixed reports agree on what makes the trip: the view over the Bay of Naples and the steam and sulfur smell at the rim. The negatives fall into two groups. The first is logistics. Local news coverage and forum posters describe hard-to-find tickets, a gate with weak Wi-Fi and a trailhead with chaotic parking and inadequate services. The second is expectation. Two forum posters found the crater underwhelming for a hard climb, while a third rated the craters as only fine and the coastal views as the payoff.
Neither group changes the verdict for most visitors. The official ticket is 10 EUR, the park caps the shorter route at 2 hours, and the logistics problems mostly hit people who arrive without a ticket. Buying the timed ticket on the official seller removes the worst of it. The expectation problem is real: there is no lava, and on a cloudy day the view that makes the trip can disappear. The park also closes the trail at short notice in bad weather, and a wildfire shut every trail in August 2025. So the verdict comes with one condition: go when the summit is clear.
From the Amalfi Coast, Vesuvius is a long day out, so reports that pair it with Pompeii or Herculaneum make the most sense of the journey. One hiking writer recommends a tour as the easiest way, since it covers transport and tickets. Those who went independently describe the public bus from Pompei as cheap and workable, and one video creator compares walking up from the base with the bus, shuttle and car options.
Timing and tickets
Standard tickets open 30 days ahead and sell in 10-minute slots, and the park admits standard ticket holders up to 2 hours either side of the printed time, which gives some slack for late buses. Last-minute tickets exist but are few, named and sold only over the Wi-Fi at the gate, so treat them as a backup. Bring a warm layer: several reports describe a cold, windy rim even when the towns below are warm. Check the park site before you set out, because the trail closes on orange weather alert days.

Questions
Can you buy Vesuvius tickets at the entrance?
No ticket office sells them there. The park sells crater tickets only online, releasing 50 per 10-minute slot 30 days ahead, plus 10 last-minute tickets per slot 30 minutes before that can be bought only on the Wi-Fi near the entrance.
How long is the walk to the crater?
The park lists the Gran Cono trail as 4,010 m round trip, topping out at 1,175 m, and caps the shorter out-and-back route at 2 hours. Travelers describe the first part as steep on loose gravel before it eases along the rim.
How do you get to Vesuvius without a car?
The park page names the EAV public bus from Pompei Villa dei Misteri station and private shuttles or taxis from Ercolano Scavi station, both reached by Circumvesuviana train. The park page does not publish the bus fare, so check it with EAV.
What are the opening hours?
The park lists crater access from 9:00 to 15:00 in January, February, November and December, to 16:00 in March and October, to 17:00 in April, May, June and September, and to 18:00 in July and August. The walk must end within an hour of the last access.
Does bad weather close the crater?
Yes. The park's visitor protocol closes ticketing and the trail automatically on days with a regional orange weather alert or higher. The park also keeps the upper rim route on the north and east side of the cone closed for safety.
