Amalfi Coast / The verdict

Amalfi Coast with or without a car?

Go without a car if you are staying on the coast itself: ferries and SITA buses link the towns, while the 2026 plate rule, full car parks and hourly fees of 5 EUR or more in Amalfi make driving the hardest option. Rent a car only off-season or for a trip that goes well beyond the coast.

The Amalfi Coast story

Fifty kilometres of cliffs between Sorrento and Salerno make this Italy's most famous shoreline: pastel towns stacked vertically above the water, a corniche road travelers call equal parts spectacular and terrifying, and the anchor trio of Positano, Amalfi and hilltop Ravello, with Sorrento just off the coast as the practical mainland base.

The verdict in 30 seconds

Our pick: Go car-free (runner-up: Hire a driver for a day)

Go without a car if you are staying on the coast itself: ferries and SITA buses link the towns, while the 2026 plate rule, full car parks and hourly fees of 5 EUR or more in Amalfi make driving the hardest option. Rent a car only off-season or for a trip that goes well beyond the coast.

Go if

  • You are staying in Positano, Amalfi, Praiano or Ravello and visiting the other towns on day trips
  • You travel between June and October, when the coast road has alternating plate days
  • You would rather not pay hourly parking in Amalfi or hunt for a space in Positano

Skip if

  • You travel between November and March, when the plate rule is off and traffic is lighter
  • Your trip continues to Puglia, the Cilento or inland Campania, where a car is useful
  • Someone in your group cannot manage steep steps or crowded buses and a hired driver is out of budget

The options

Go car-free Go

Travelers staying in one coastal town who reach the others by ferry and SITA bus.

Good

  • A 24-hour bus ticket is 10 EUR, and the Amalfi to Positano ferry is 10 EUR one way.
  • No plate rule, no parking fees and no hunt for a space.
  • Buses reach Ravello and the villages above the coast, and ferries skip the road entirely.
  • Travelers describe the ferry ride along the coast as a highlight.

Watch out

  • Summer buses fill up and pass people waiting at intermediate stops, per reports.
  • Rough seas cancel ferries, and last sailings leave in the early evening.
  • Travelers with a lot of luggage find buses and ferries harder going, per reports.

Rent a car It depends

Confident drivers visiting from November to May, or combining the coast with Paestum, Puglia or inland Campania.

Good

  • Freedom to start early, stop at viewpoints and reach places buses serve rarely.
  • Handy for heavy luggage and for travelers with limited mobility.
  • The plate rule is off from November to March and lodging guests are exempt on arrival and departure days.

Watch out

  • On restricted days in 2026 the plate rule bans odd or even plates from 10:00 to 18:00.
  • Amalfi's municipal car parks charge 5 EUR an hour in season plus a surcharge for the first two hours.
  • Travelers report stressful summer traffic, blind bends and full car parks in Positano.
  • Landslides and queues can close or block the single coast road.

Hire a driver for a day It depends

Travelers with little time or limited mobility who want several towns in one day without parking.

Good

  • Taxis and licensed hire cars (NCC) are exempt from the plate rule.
  • A forum poster covered Vietri, Ravello and Minori in one day, which they said buses and ferries could not match.
  • No parking fees or searching for a space.

Watch out

  • Prices are set by each operator and not published on an official site.
  • The driver sits in the same summer traffic as everyone else.

What travelers report

Based on 14 traveler reports (Dec 2025 to Sep 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 3 were negative.

What people like

  • Drivers value stopping at viewpoints and setting their own schedule.
  • Outside July and August, reports describe the drive as manageable and one of the most scenic anywhere.
  • A hired driver fits several towns into one day with no parking to find, per one forum report.
  • Car-free travelers enjoy cheap buses and ferry rides along the coast.

What people complain about

  • Parking in Positano and Amalfi is scarce, fills early and costs a lot.
  • Summer traffic, blind bends and oncoming coaches make the drive stressful.
  • The alternating plate rule rules out rental cars on many summer days.
  • Road closures and queues of minivans cause long delays.

How to do it right

  • Base yourself in one coastal town and reach the others by ferry or SITA bus, buying bus tickets before you board.
  • If you rent, check the plate rule calendar before each driving day between June and October; it bans odd or even plates on the coast road from 10:00 to 18:00.
  • Drive before 10:00 or after 18:00 on restricted days, or use your check-in and check-out days, when hotel guests with a booking are exempt.
  • Book lodging with parking before you rent, since travelers report that Positano and Amalfi car parks fill early.
  • Pick up the car only for the part of the trip that leaves the coast, such as Paestum or Puglia.

The trap to avoid

Renting a car at Naples airport for a stay in Positano, then finding the plate rule bans your plate on alternate days and parking costs more than the rental.

What to do instead

Why this verdict

The reports split by season more than by driver skill. Forum replies say the coast road is not dangerous for most drivers, and a writer who calls the summer drive a test of patience also calls it extraordinary outside peak season. The complaints cluster in the busy months: full car parks in Positano, blind bends with coaches coming the other way, and queues that local news described again in September 2026.

The rules tip the choice for anyone staying on the coast. In 2026 the plate rule bans odd or even plates on the SS163 from 10:00 to 18:00 on summer weekends and every day in August and September, and lodging guests are exempt only on their arrival and departure days. A rented car is barred from the coast road between 10:00 and 18:00 on alternate days of a late-summer stay. Parking adds up too: Amalfi’s municipal car parks charge non-residents 5 EUR an hour in season plus a surcharge for the first two hours, or 40 EUR a day for a long stay. Against that, a full day of SITA buses costs 10 EUR and the ferry from Amalfi to Positano is 10 EUR.

The single road is the other weakness. A July 2026 rockfall closed it between the Sorrento peninsula and Positano, and the advice in the news report was to take the boat. Car-free travelers lose less when that happens.

A car still earns its place in some trips, which is why its verdict is depends. The rule is off from November to March, traffic is lighter, and a car makes sense if the trip continues to Paestum, Puglia or inland Campania. Travelers with heavy luggage or limited mobility also benefit.

For a busy day with several stops, a hired driver is the middle ground. One forum poster covered Vietri, Ravello and Minori in a day with a driver and guide and said public transport could not have matched it. Taxis and licensed hire cars are exempt from the plate rule, though prices are set by each operator.

Timing and tickets

If you do rent, collect the car on the day you leave the coast, and check the plate rule calendar for October weekends before you plan a drive.

Questions

How does the Amalfi Coast plate rule work in 2026?

It applies to cars on the SS163 between Vietri sul Mare and Positano from 10:00 to 18:00. On odd dates, plates ending in an odd digit cannot drive; on even dates, plates ending in an even digit cannot. In 2026 it runs on weekends and holidays from 1 June to 31 July, every day from 1 August to 30 September, and on weekends in October, plus Easter week and the late April holiday bridge.

Can hotel guests drive on a restricted day?

Only to arrive and leave. The Praiano municipal page says guests of hotels and rentals with a booking are exempt on the check-in and check-out days only; any other trip by car follows the rule. Residents, taxis, licensed hire cars (NCC) and vehicles with a disabled badge are exempt.

Does the plate rule apply to scooters?

No. The municipal notices state that motorcycles, scooters and other two-wheelers are not covered. The rule also does not apply outside 10:00 to 18:00.

How much does parking cost in Amalfi?

The municipal car parks at Luna Rossa and Berma charge non-residents 5 EUR an hour from 9:00 to 19:00 between 1 April and 5 November 2026, plus 2 EUR an hour for the first two hours. Luna Rossa also sells long-stay parking at 40 EUR a day, or 45 EUR in August.

Is Positano parking cheaper?

Positano car park prices are not published on an official site. Travelers report high daily rates and car parks that fill early in summer, so book lodging with a space before you bring a car.
