The Menorca story

Menorca is the Balearics' quiet island: a UNESCO biosphere reserve where the headline is not a monument but the coastline itself, more than 100 beaches and coves strung between pine cliffs, plus two pretty harbour towns, Mahon and Ciutadella, at either end.

Go

For most travelers, yes: the south coast's best coves are easiest to reach by sea. The cheapest option is the one-hour Mahon harbour cruise at 18 euros, the classic day out is a south-coast boat with swim stops from 45 euros, and small-group llauts from Cala Galdana cost 75 euros a head.

Go if

  • Beach-first travelers who want Cala Macarella, Cala Turqueta or the south coves without the summer car bans and shuttle bookings
  • Groups who can split a private llaut into a fair per-head price
  • Active travelers who prefer paddling: guided kayak trips run in Fornells from 40 euros
  • Anyone in Mahon with a spare hour: the harbour cruise is 18 euros on the official site

Skip if

  • You get seasick or need a fixed date: operators note sailing times can change with sea and weather conditions
  • Your trip falls outside the operators' published seasons, which mostly run from spring to October
  • You only want one specific beach: the shuttle bus or the Camí de Cavalls get you there for less

What it costs

  • Yellow Catamarans, one-hour Mahon harbour cruise, adult: €18 (Children 3 to 12 pay 9 euros. The 2026 season runs from April to October, with four daily departures and five in July and August.). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
  • Menorca Blava full-day south-coast boat trip from Ciutadella, adult: €45 (From 45 euros per person: 9:45 departure from Ciutadella, back about 17:00, paella lunch on board.). Official source, checked Oct 2026.

What travelers report

Based on 2 traveler reports (May 2025 to May 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 0 were negative.

What people like

  • Arriving by boat reaches the south coves early, before the crowds on the sand (1 of 2 reports)
  • Small shared llauts with a skipper who knows the coast give good value for money (1 of 2 reports)
  • Swim and snorkel stops in clear water at Mitjana, Macarella and Macarelleta are the highlight (1 of 2 reports)

What people complain about

  • Turqueta was already busy when the boat arrived (1 of 2 reports)
  • Trebalúger has no shade or services, so bring what you need (1 of 2 reports)
  • Pets are not allowed on board (1 of 2 reports)

How to do it right

  • Decide what you are buying: an 18-euro harbour cruise, a 35-euro drop-off boat to Macarella, a south-coast day boat from 45 euros, a 75-euro shared llaut, or a 40-euro guided kayak. They share the water, not the experience.
  • Depart from the right side of the island: Ciutadella and Cala Galdana serve the south coves, Fornells the north coast kayak trips, and Mahon the harbour cruise.
  • Book online ahead in July and August; Taximar and Boat Menorca both recommend or require online booking.
  • Keep a spare day, since operators say departure times can change with sea and weather conditions.
  • If a beach is the goal rather than the ride, the Taximar drop-off from Cala Galdana leaves you about four hours at Macarella and Macarelleta.

The trap to avoid

Assuming the cheapest ticket buys the famous coves. The 18-euro Mahon harbour cruise is a port tour with an underwater viewing chamber on the east side of the island; the south-coast coves need a boat from Ciutadella or Cala Galdana.

What to do instead

Why this verdict

Menorca sells itself on its south-coast coves, and several of the best have no road at all, or close their road to private cars in summer. A boat is the easy way in, and the operators’ own pages lay out clear price bands. The 18-euro Yellow Catamarans cruise is an hour around Mahon harbour with an underwater viewing chamber, not a beach trip. Taximar’s 35-euro drop-off boat leaves you about four hours at Macarella and Macarelleta. Menorca Blava’s full day from Ciutadella starts at 45 euros with paella aboard, Boat Menorca’s shared llaut from Cala Galdana is 75 euros a head for 3.5 hours, and Katayak’s guided kayak half day in Fornells is 40.

The traveler log is small but points one way. A couple who spent a long shared llaut day out of Cala Galdana describe a friendly skipper, swim and snorkel stops at Mitjana, Macarella and Macarelleta, local cheese and snacks aboard, and value for money they rate highly. Arriving by sea let them reach Macarella while it was still quiet; Turqueta was already busy, and Trebalúger had no shade or services. A Portuguese-language vlog films a boat trip and a visit to the same two Macarella coves. Neither report suggests the boat was a mistake.

Timing and tickets

Book online, especially in July and August: Taximar recommends it and Boat Menorca takes online reservations only. Yellow Catamarans sails from April to October in 2026, with a fifth sailing in July and August. Operators note that sea and weather conditions can change departure and pickup times, so put the boat early in your stay. Match the ticket to the promise: the harbour cruise shows you Mahon, while the cove trips leave from Ciutadella or Cala Galdana. If one beach is all you want, the summer shuttle or the Camí de Cavalls trail costs less.

Questions

How much does a Menorca boat trip cost?

On the operators' own sites: 18 euros for the one-hour Mahon harbour cruise, 35 euros per seat for the Taximar drop-off at Macarella, from 45 euros for the Menorca Blava full day from Ciutadella, and 75 euros per person for a shared 3.5-hour llaut from Cala Galdana. A guided kayak half day in Fornells is 40 euros.

Which port should a Menorca boat trip leave from?

Ciutadella and Cala Galdana handle the south-coast cove trips to Macarella, Turqueta and Son Saura. Fornells runs kayak trips on the north coast, and Mahon runs the harbour cruise.

Can you rent a boat without a licence in Menorca?

Some operators list licence-free boats; Boat Menorca has a no-licence rental category alongside skippered boats. Check the boat's size and engine limits with the operator, since larger boats need a licence or a skipper.

What is a shared llaut trip like?

One couple's shared llaut day from Cala Galdana had a friendly skipper, swim stops at Mitjana, Macarella and Macarelleta, and local snacks aboard, and they rated the value for money highly. Boat Menorca's shared trips take small groups and run 3.5 hours.

What happens if the weather turns?

Operators note that departure and pickup times can change with sea and weather conditions. Book early in your stay so a changed sailing still fits.

Is kayaking a good alternative to a boat trip?

For active travelers, yes: Katayak's guided half-day kayak and snorkel trip in Fornells costs 40 euros for adults and 30 for children under 12, running about three hours.
