Menorca / The verdict

Are Cala Macarella and Macarelleta worth it?

Yes for most visitors: the twin coves really do look like the photos, but from June to September you reach them by shuttle, trail or boat, and timing decides whether it feels like paradise or a crowd.

The Menorca story

Menorca is the Balearics' quiet island: a UNESCO biosphere reserve where the headline is not a monument but the coastline itself, more than 100 beaches and coves strung between pine cliffs, plus two pretty harbour towns, Mahon and Ciutadella, at either end.

Go

Yes for most visitors: the twin coves really do look like the photos, but from June to September you reach them by shuttle, trail or boat, and timing decides whether it feels like paradise or a crowd.

Go if

  • Beach-first travelers who want Menorca's signature turquoise coves and will plan access ahead
  • Walkers: reports put the Camí de Cavalls approach from Cala Galdana at about 35 to 40 minutes each way, and the writers who walked it rate it the best way in
  • Early risers and late-afternoon swimmers who can avoid the midday peak in summer

Skip if

  • You want to park beside the sand: the access road is closed to private cars in the summer season
  • You need step-free access or you are carrying a pushchair: both coves end in trails and steps, and the path to Macarelleta is steeper
  • You want loungers and services at both coves: Macarella has a beach bar, restaurant and toilets, and Macarelleta has none

What it costs

  • Bus Macarella shuttle, Ciutadella to Cala Macarella, one way: €4.60 (Seasonal service; the Consell's Bus Macarella page lists 4.60 EUR one way and 8.40 EUR return for the 2026 season and sells tickets online. The Torres general fare table lists the L69 at 4.65 EUR.). Official source, checked Oct 2026.

What travelers report

Based on 5 traveler reports (Jun 2025 to Jun 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 0 were negative.

What people like

  • The coves live up to the photos: turquoise water, white sand and pine-backed cliffs (4 of 5 reports)
  • The walk in from Cala Galdana is the favored way to arrive, about 35 to 40 minutes each way (3 reports)
  • Early morning and late afternoon visits feel calm even in summer (4 reports)

What people complain about

  • It ranks among the busiest beaches on the island in summer (3 reports)
  • The shuttle has to be booked online ahead; one report says a week ahead in high season (1 report)
  • The path and steps on to Macarelleta are steeper and narrower than the main trail (2 reports)
  • Macarelleta has no facilities and little shade (2 reports)

How to do it right

  • Decide your mode first: shuttle bus from Ciutadella, the Camí de Cavalls walk from Cala Galdana, or a south-coast boat trip; there is no private-car access in season.
  • If bussing, book the shuttle online before you travel; one report advises about a week ahead in high season.
  • If walking, start at Cala Galdana; reports put it at 35 to 40 minutes each way. Wear closed shoes and carry plenty of water.
  • From the shuttle stop at the car park, one report puts the walk down to the sand at 15 to 20 minutes.
  • In summer arrive before 09:00 or after 18:00; reports say early and late hours are when the coves feel calm.
  • Cross to Macarelleta on the path at the end of Macarella: reports put it at 10 to 15 minutes, with steeper rock steps than the main trail.
  • Pack everything you need for Macarelleta: reports say it has no bar, no facilities and little shade.

The trap to avoid

Turning up in a rental car in the summer season. The access road is closed to private vehicles, so the only way in is the shuttle, a walk, or a boat.

What to do instead

Why this verdict

Cala Macarella is the beach Menorca puts on its postcards, and the five reports logged here agree it earns the reputation. Four describe the same scene: calm turquoise water over white sand, framed by pine-covered limestone cliffs, with Macarelleta a short, steeper walk over the headland. One writer who has walked plenty of coastlines ranks Macarelleta near the top of any beach visited.

What keeps the coves looking wild is the summer car ban. In season there are three ways in: the shuttle from Ciutadella, the Camí de Cavalls trail from Cala Galdana, or a boat. All three writers who walked from Galdana rate the trail as the best arrival, at about 35 to 40 minutes each way on a mostly gentle path that people in flip flops and older walkers were managing. The catch is heat: one report warns that the summer sun is fierce and advises avoiding the middle of the day.

The negatives are about crowds and planning, not about the beach itself. Three reports call it one of the busiest beaches on the island in summer, and both mixed reports say the experience depends on timing. The fix is consistent across the log: arrive before 09:00 or after 18:00, or come in May or late September. One writer found Macarelleta nearly empty at sunrise. Those complaints shape how to visit; they do not change whether to go.

Timing and tickets

The official Bus Macarella page lists the shuttle at 4.60 EUR one way for the 2026 season, sold online, and one report advises booking about a week ahead in high season rather than turning up at the stop. Facilities are thin for such a famous beach: Macarella has a beach bar, a restaurant and toilets, while Macarelleta has nothing and little shade. Bring water, snacks and something for shade, and wear proper shoes for the steps between the two coves.

Questions

Can you drive to Cala Macarella?

Only outside the summer season. In summer the road is closed to private cars and access is the shuttle from Ciutadella, the walk from Cala Galdana, or a boat. Off season you can drive to the car park; one report puts the walk down at 15 to 20 minutes.

How long is the walk from Cala Galdana to Cala Macarella?

Reports put it at 35 to 40 minutes each way on the Camí de Cavalls, on a mostly gentle trail with some steps. Take water and avoid midday heat in summer.

Is Cala Macarelleta a nudist beach?

It is clothing-optional, and reports note some nude bathers while plenty of visitors wear swimwear. It is reached by a steeper 10 to 15 minute path from Macarella and has no services.

Can you see the coves by boat instead?

Yes. South-coast boat trips from Ciutadella and Cala Galdana pass the coves, and reports mention boat and taxi-boat access as an alternative to the shuttle or the walk.

Are there facilities at Cala Macarella?

Reports list a beach bar and restaurant, toilets and kayak rental at Macarella, with pine shade at the back of the beach. Macarelleta has no facilities and little shade, so bring water, snacks and shade if you plan a long stay.

When is Cala Macarella least crowded?
