Interlaken / The verdict
Is Jungfraujoch worth it?
Yes on a clear day if the fare fits your budget: travelers who went up in good visibility rate the Aletsch Glacier views highly, while cloud, crowds and the price are what turn others against it.
By The Real Traveler Experiences team.

The Interlaken story
Interlaken sits on a strip of flat land between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, and most visitors use it as a launch pad rather than a destination. Trains and cable cars from here reach Jungfraujoch, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen and the Schilthorn, so the town's real draw is how quickly it puts you among the mountains.

- The railway through the Eiger and the Eiger Express ride are part of the experience.
- The Ice Palace and the snow on the plateau impress children and first-time visitors.
- Travelers who went up early describe a quieter summit than later in the day.
What people complain about
- Several reports warn that cloud at the summit wipes out the main reason to go.

- Viewing areas, the Ice Palace and photo spots get crowded as the day goes on.
- Parts of the summit complex feel commercial or kitschy to some travelers.
- It is cold on top even in July, which surprised travelers dressed for the valley.
How to do it right
- Check the official summit webcams the evening before and again in the morning, and buy only once the top looks clear.
- Buy the ticket and the CHF 10 seat reservation on jungfrau.ch; the reservation can be cancelled free until 21:59 the day before.
- Take the Eiger Express route via Grindelwald Terminal, which the official FAQ times at 45 minutes each way from the terminal.
- Ride one of the first two connections with the Good Morning Ticket (20% off, 1 May to 31 October 2026) if you have no pass discount to use.
- Pack a jacket, gloves, hat and sunglasses; the official site expects below-freezing temperatures in summer too.
- Plan at least 3.5 to 4.5 hours for the Eiger Express round trip, as the official FAQ suggests.
The trap to avoid
Buying a fixed-date ticket weeks ahead locks you in: travelers who went up in cloud describe paying the full fare for a white view, so wait for the webcams before you buy.
What to do instead
Why this verdict
The reports split on weather more than on anything at the top. Travelers who went up in clear conditions, including two families and a couple who took the first train, describe the glacier view as worth the trip and in some cases far better than they expected. The reports that turn against Jungfraujoch mostly come from cloud: one writer skipped it after a week of rain, and a forum poster who had one clear day in six called a cloudy-day visit a complete waste. That is why the verdict is depends rather than go. The view is the product, and you cannot see it in advance from a booking page.
Price is the second filter. Several of the positive reports also call it expensive, and the official summer return from Interlaken Ost is CHF 271.20 before the seat reservation. A Half Fare Card roughly halves it, and the official calculator shows a smaller cut for Swiss Travel Pass holders. If you have no discount and limited days, the Schilthorn, Harder Kulm or Grindelwald First give big mountain views for less, and the comparison matters most when the forecast is uncertain.
Crowds and commercial feel are real but manageable. Trekkers who queued for an early train found large crowds and called the complex a theme park, while a couple on the first train describe a quiet plateau that filled up as more trains arrived. The negatives about crowding mostly point to timing, which you control.
Timing and tickets
Buy direct on jungfrau.ch, and buy late. The official site makes a seat reservation mandatory from 1 May to 31 October 2026 and lets you cancel it free until the evening before, so you can hold a slot and still watch the forecast. Check the summit webcams on the morning you go, since the official site notes the top is often above valley cloud. The Good Morning Ticket takes 20% off the first two connections in summer but cannot be combined with pass discounts, so compare it against your card before choosing. In winter the fares drop and the official FAQ makes the reservation optional, which suits travelers who can be flexible about the day.
