Crete / The verdict

Heraklion airport to the city: which way?

Take the city bus: EUR 1.30 bought before boarding, about every 10 to 15 minutes until roughly midnight, and about 20 minutes to Eleftherias Square. After midnight, or with heavy bags, use the taxi rank outside arrivals.

The Crete story

Crete behaves less like a Greek island than a small country with a coastline attached. A mountain spine still decides where villages sit and what lands on the table, Minoan palaces share the map with Venetian harbour towns, and the food is a regional cuisine of its own rather than generic Greek. Travelers arrive for the beaches and stay for the depth: gorges, stone villages, and two very different city bases in Chania on the west and Heraklion around Knossos in the centre.

The verdict in 30 seconds

Our pick: City bus (Astiko urban lines) (runner-up: Taxi or pre-booked transfer)

Take the city bus: EUR 1.30 bought before boarding, about every 10 to 15 minutes until roughly midnight, and about 20 minutes to Eleftherias Square. After midnight, or with heavy bags, use the taxi rank outside arrivals.

Go if

  • You land before about midnight, when the city bus is still running
  • You are staying near Eleftherias Square, the port or Bus Station A
  • You are traveling light enough to keep bags in the cabin

Skip if

  • You land after the last bus, when the taxi rank is the only option
  • You are three or four people with suitcases, where one metered fare splits well
  • You expect a resort coach at the terminal: intercity buses leave from town stations only

The options

City bus (Astiko urban lines) Go

Most arrivals before midnight, solo travelers and anyone staying near Eleftherias Square or the port.

Good

  • EUR 1.30 bought before boarding is the cheapest way in by far.
  • Reports put the service at about every 10 to 15 minutes from roughly 06:00 to midnight, year round.
  • The ride to Eleftherias Square takes about 20 minutes and passes Bus Station A for onward coaches and the Knossos bus.

Watch out

  • Luggage rides in the cabin, which reports call uncomfortable on crowded summer runs.
  • Nothing runs after about midnight, so late arrivals need a taxi.
  • The stop sits about a five-minute walk along the road from the terminal.

Taxi or pre-booked transfer It depends

Late-night arrivals, groups splitting one fare, and travelers with heavy bags.

Good

  • Taxis wait around the clock outside arrivals and reach the center in about 10 to 15 minutes.
  • The national tariff is regulated: EUR 1.80 flag fall, EUR 0.90 per km by day, plus a EUR 4 airport supplement.
  • Reports put the meter to the center around EUR 15 to 25, and a pre-booked transfer fixes the price before you land.

Watch out

  • For one or two people it costs many times the bus fare.
  • Neither Uber nor Bolt operates in Crete, so app users rely on local booking or the rank.
  • Reports advise agreeing the fare or checking the meter runs before setting off.

Rental car It depends

Travelers heading straight to the resorts or countryside rather than staying in Heraklion.

Good

  • Most rental desks sit in or beside the arrivals hall, so drivers leave the airport within minutes.
  • Reports call a car the practical way to reach Crete's beaches, gorges and villages.
  • Collecting at the airport skips the town leg entirely.

Watch out

  • Heraklion's traffic and scarce central parking make a car a burden for a city stay.
  • Reports describe long pick-up lines at the desks when several flights land together.
  • Fuel and parking come on top of the daily rate.

Intercity KTEL coach straight to the resorts Skip

Only travelers who know their coach departs a town station and just need the city bus to reach it.

Good

  • Intercity coaches do reach Chania, Rethymno, Agios Nikolaos, Sitia and the south coast from Heraklion.
  • The city bus passes Bus Station A on the port road about 15 to 20 minutes in.

Watch out

  • No intercity coach departs the airport itself, so every onward trip starts with the ride into town.
  • Reports describe travelers waiting at the terminal for a resort bus that does not exist.
  • For resort-bound groups a direct taxi or transfer is usually faster than the two-leg bus journey.

What it costs

  • City bus single, Zone A, bought before boarding: €1.30 (EUR 2.30 bought on board; the airport and the center are both inside Zone A). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
  • All-day city bus ticket: €5 (unlimited Astiko urban rides both zones; 24-hour ticket EUR 6). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
  • Taxi flag drop (national regulated tariff): €1.80 (then EUR 0.90/km by day and EUR 1.25/km from 00:00 to 05:00; minimum ride EUR 4). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
  • Taxi supplement to or from an airport: €4. Official source, checked Oct 2026.

What travelers report

Based on 16 traveler reports (Feb 2025 to Sep 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 0 were negative.

What people like

  • The city bus costs little more than a euro and reaches the center in about 20 minutes.
  • Buses run about every 10 to 15 minutes until roughly midnight, covering most flights.
  • The airport sits only about 5 km out, so even a taxi is a short ride.
  • Arrivals walk straight out to the taxi rank and the rental desks, with no shuttle needed.

What people complain about

  • Luggage rides in the bus cabin, which reports call uncomfortable on crowded summer runs.
  • Nothing runs after about midnight, leaving late arrivals to the taxi rank.
  • Travelers expecting a resort coach find that every intercity bus leaves from town.
  • The bus stop is a five-minute walk along the road, unloved with heavy bags in the heat.
  • The arrivals hall and taxi line crowd fast when several flights land together.

How to do it right

  • Leave the terminal, turn right and walk about five minutes along the road to the city bus stop.
  • Buy the Zone A ticket at the machine, kiosk or the Astiko app for EUR 1.30 before boarding; it costs EUR 2.30 from the driver.
  • Board by the destination board rather than a route number: buses toward town display HERAKLEIO or IRAKLIO, and guides list line numbers that change by season.
  • Ride about 20 minutes to Eleftherias Square for the center, or get off at Bus Station A on the port road for intercity coaches and the bus to Knossos.
  • After about midnight use the taxi rank outside arrivals; it is staffed around the clock and the tariff is metered.
  • For onward travel buy coach tickets at the town stations: no Chania, Rethymno or resort bus leaves from the airport.

The trap to avoid

Waiting at the terminal for an intercity coach that never comes. Every coach to Chania, Rethymno, Agios Nikolaos and the resorts leaves from the town stations, so the city bus into Heraklion is the first leg whatever your final destination.

Why this verdict

Heraklion’s airport sits barely 5 km from the center, so the real answer is boring on purpose: the city bus. For EUR 1.30 bought before boarding, urban buses leave about every 10 to 15 minutes and drop you at Eleftherias Square in about 20 minutes, passing Bus Station A on the port road for onward coaches and the Knossos line. Reports are consistent that this is the default choice for anyone landing before midnight.

The complaints are real but narrow. Bags ride in the cabin, summer runs get crowded, and nothing runs after about midnight. That is exactly when the taxi option earns its place: the rank outside arrivals is staffed around the clock, the national tariff is regulated and reports put the meter to the center around EUR 15 to 25. For a group splitting one fare it is nearly painless. Ride-hailing apps do not operate in Crete, so a pre-booked transfer is the way to fix a price in advance.

The one option to unlearn is the intercity coach. Travelers regularly expect a resort bus at the kerb; there is none. Every coach to Chania, Rethymno, Agios Nikolaos and the south leaves from the town stations, so your first leg is always the city bus (or a taxi) into Heraklion.

Timing and tickets

Buy the Zone A ticket at the machine, kiosk or the operator’s app before boarding: EUR 1.30 versus EUR 2.30 on the bus. Board by the destination board reading HERAKLEIO or IRAKLIO rather than trusting a route number, since guides list different lines and the operator publishes no single airport number. Drivers collecting a rental car walk to the desks in or beside arrivals. One forward note: the new Kasteli airport about 40 km southeast is now reported for commercial opening around autumn 2028, so this guide stays current for at least a few more seasons.

Questions

Does the bus run late at night?

No. Reports put the last airport departures around midnight, with reduced frequency on Sundays and holidays. After that the taxi rank outside arrivals is the only option; taxis wait around the clock.

How much is a taxi to the center?

The national tariff is regulated: EUR 1.80 flag fall, EUR 0.90 per km by day (EUR 1.25 between 00:00 and 05:00), a EUR 4 airport supplement and a EUR 4 minimum ride. Reports put the meter to the center around EUR 15 to 25.

Do ride-hailing apps work at Heraklion airport?

No. Forum reports confirm that neither Uber nor Bolt operates in Crete. Your choices are the rank taxi, a local radio-taxi booking or a pre-booked transfer.

Can I reach Chania or the resorts directly from the airport?

Not by coach. Intercity buses leave from Bus Station A on the port road (north coast, east, Rethymno and Chania) and Bus Station B at the Chanioporta gate (south and west). The city bus passes Bus Station A about 15 to 20 minutes in.

Is the airport moving to Kasteli?

Eventually. The new Kasteli airport about 40 km southeast cleared its last big legal hurdle in September 2026, with test flights planned for 2027 and commercial operations reported around autumn 2028. Until then all flights use Nikos Kazantzakis airport, about 5 km east of town.
