Corfu / The verdict

Corfu or Kefalonia: which island?

Pick Corfu for a first Ionian trip: a UNESCO old town and a car-free base, with a rental car only for beach days. Pick Kefalonia when beaches and quiet villages lead and you are happy to drive. Do not plan to do both on a short trip.

The Corfu story

Corfu is the Ionian counterweight to the Aegean cliche: greener, wetter and more Venetian than any Cycladic island, with a UNESCO-listed old town of French arcades and Italian facades that feels closer to a southern-Italian port than to Mykonos. The north-east stacks cypress-framed bays and white-villa country, the west has the big sandy beaches, and the interior is olive-grove Greece at its most intact.

The verdict in 30 seconds

Our pick: Corfu (runner-up: Kefalonia)

Pick Corfu for a first Ionian trip: a UNESCO old town and a car-free base, with a rental car only for beach days. Pick Kefalonia when beaches and quiet villages lead and you are happy to drive. Do not plan to do both on a short trip.

Go if

  • First-time Greece trips wanting a real town plus beaches; Corfu Town works without a car and boat days start from it
  • Travelers without a car; one traveler found Corfu Town easy on foot and by airport bus, while Kefalonia's bus timetables are described as very limited
  • Beach-led and road-trip travelers; Kefalonia's Myrtos, Antisamos and Petani coastline is the draw
  • Couples wanting quiet evenings; Assos and Fiskardo came across as calm, slow villages

Skip if

  • You want to island-hop quickly; the direct Corfu to Kefalonia hopper is a long seasonal day and is not operating now
  • You only have 4 or 5 days; that is one island, not a two-island trip
  • You dislike narrow, winding roads; reports describe the Myrtos approach and Kefalonia's distances that way

The options

Corfu Go

First Ionian trips and car-free stays: a UNESCO old town to base in, boat trips from the harbor and a rental car added only for beach days.

Good

  • The old town is a UNESCO site with two fortresses, and a traveler could stay there for three days without a car
  • A full-day boat trip to Paxos and Antipaxos starts from the town and was a trip highlight for one traveler
  • The airport bus into town took about 15 minutes for about EUR 2 on one trip
  • Quieter beaches exist: Agios Georgios and Agios Gordios were not particularly crowded on one September visit

Watch out

  • The best-known beach towns can be too busy: Paleokastritsa felt far too busy to one couple and Sidari much more developed than remembered
  • Getting around by car takes longer than the map suggests; one traveler spent an hour driving 25 km
  • Hotels and beaches reached by rental car mean a car is needed after the first days

Kefalonia Go

Beach-first trips, couples and confident drivers: Myrtos, Antisamos and Fteri, plus villages like Assos and Fiskardo.

Good

  • Myrtos, Antisamos and Fteri are the coastline travelers write about most, with clear water and green mountain scenery
  • Assos and Fiskardo felt calm and unhurried, and late May and mid to late September were described as less crowded
  • A five to seven day stay gives time for the whole island plus a few unplanned beach days, one traveler advises

Watch out

  • A car is close to mandatory: bus timetables are very limited and many places have no bus
  • The famous beaches are pebbly with scarce shade, and the Myrtos approach is steep, winding and narrow
  • Parking at some beaches was full on one road trip, and a basic sandwich cost about EUR 25 at a tourist spot
  • Reaching it takes a ferry from the mainland and weather can stop sailings in winds above force 7

Corfu and Kefalonia on one trip It depends

Trips of 10 days or more with a taste for logistics: the islands are far apart and combining them is a routing exercise, not a hop.

Good

  • Both moods in one holiday: Corfu's town and boat days, Kefalonia's coastline and calm
  • The operator's timetable shows a Corfu to Sami (Kefalonia) hopper on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, about 10 hours with four stops
  • A mainland routing exists: the Igoumenitsa ferry from Corfu and the Kyllini or Patras ferry to Kefalonia

Watch out

  • The operator's site currently says the hopper line is not operating, and one traveler had to re-route when it did not get a license this year
  • The mainland alternative is a full travel day of ferry, drive and ferry again
  • Under 10 days the transfers eat the holiday

What travelers report

Based on 8 traveler reports (Oct 2024 to Sep 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 0 were negative.

What people like

  • Kefalonia's coast and calm: Myrtos, Antisamos and Fteri, plus slow villages like Assos and Fiskardo (5 of 8 reports)
  • Corfu Town as a car-free base with boat trips from the harbor (2 of 8 reports)
  • Shoulder-season calm: late May and mid to late September felt less crowded (2 of 8 reports)

What people complain about

  • Kefalonia needs a car: bus timetables are very limited and the beaches are far apart (3 of 8 reports)
  • Famous Kefalonia spots can be hard work: pebbly beaches, scarce shade, a steep Myrtos drive and full parking (4 of 8 reports)
  • Corfu's best-known beach towns feel busy and developed, and driving takes longer than expected (2 of 8 reports)
  • No easy link between the islands: one trip had to be re-routed when the hopper did not sail (1 of 8 reports)

How to do it right

  • Decide by the trip's center of gravity: a town-and-boat-day week points to Corfu, a beach-and-driving week points to Kefalonia.
  • On Corfu, base in the old town first and add a rental car only when you move to the beaches; the airport bus into town is short and cheap.
  • On Kefalonia, book the rental car with your flights or ferry; bus timetables are very limited and beaches sit far apart.
  • Take the Myrtos road slowly and arrive early or late in the day; bring water shoes, sun protection and water.
  • Check the Kyllini to Poros or Patras ferry timetable on the operator's site a couple of weeks ahead and keep a weather buffer in winter.
  • If you want both islands, allow 10 or more days and check whether the hopper is operating before building a plan around it.

The trap to avoid

Assuming the two islands pair like the Cyclades. They sit far apart in the Ionian chain, the direct hopper is a long seasonal day that is not operating now, and the mainland alternative swallows a whole day. Under 10 days, pick one.

What to do instead

Why this verdict

The reports are mostly about Kefalonia, and they agree on its pull and its price. Travelers praise Myrtos, Antisamos and Fteri and the calm of Assos and Fiskardo, but they also say a rental car is close to a requirement, the beaches are pebbly with little shade, and the Myrtos approach is steep, narrow and winding. One road trip hit a beach where parking was full. The reports describing quiet days came from late May and mid to late September.

Corfu is the better first pick because it is easier to start with. One traveler spent three days in Corfu Town without a car, took a full-day boat trip to Paxos and Antipaxos, and only then rented a car for the beaches. That is a gentler first week than anything on Kefalonia, where bus timetables are described as very limited. Corfu has its own crowding: one couple found Paleokastritsa far too busy and Sidari much more developed than they remembered, and driving took longer than expected.

The verdict is a pick for a first trip, not a ranking of the islands. If the coastline decides the holiday and you are comfortable behind the wheel, Kefalonia is the stronger choice. With only two Corfu reports in the log, treat the Corfu side as the less tested half of this comparison.

The trap is treating them as a two-stop trip. The direct Lefkada Palace hopper takes about ten hours with four stops, runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and the operator’s site says the line is not currently operating. One traveler had to re-route because it did not get a license that year. The mainland route is a full travel day. Under ten days, pick one island.

Timing and tickets

Late May, June and September were the comfortable months described for Kefalonia, and some restaurants and services close in April and October. The official fares and tickets worth knowing: Kyllini to Poros EUR 15.40 for a foot passenger (last confirmed 2026-10-02), Melissani EUR 10, Drogarati EUR 6 and the Old Fortress in Corfu Town EUR 10, all checked on 2026-10-07. Book the Kefalonia rental car when you book the flights, and check the ferry timetable on the operator’s site a couple of weeks ahead.

Questions

Which island has better beaches, Corfu or Kefalonia?

Kefalonia for drama: Myrtos, Antisamos and Fteri were the beaches travelers praised most. Expect pebbles, little shade and a steep, narrow drive to Myrtos. Corfu's beaches are easier and some were quiet, though Paleokastritsa felt far too busy to one couple.

Can you visit Corfu and Kefalonia on the same trip?

Yes, but slowly. The operator's timetable lists a Monday, Wednesday and Friday hopper of about 10 hours at EUR 25.30, but the operator's site says the line is not currently operating. The mainland route via Igoumenitsa and Kyllini or Patras takes a full day.

Which island is better without a car?

Corfu. A traveler stayed in the old town for three days with no car, using the airport bus and a boat trip, and rented a car only for the beaches. For Kefalonia, travelers say the bus timetables are very limited and many places have no bus at all.

Do you need a car on Corfu?

Not in the old town, but it helps for the beaches. One traveler rented a car after three town days and still found that driving took longer than expected, about an hour for 25 km.

Which island is less crowded?

It depends on the spot and the month. Kefalonia felt calm in late May and in mid to late September, while its best-known beaches still had full parking in summer. On Corfu, Paleokastritsa felt far too busy to one couple and Agios Georgios was quiet for another.

When is the best time to visit?

Late May, June and September were described as the comfortable months on Kefalonia, with fewer crowds. In April and October some restaurants and services, such as the water taxi to Fteri, are closed.
