Bologna / The verdict

Is the Bologna Welcome Card worth it?

It depends on how many included sights you will actually use. The Easy card at 35 euros pays off once you add two or three paid museums on top of the Discover Bologna tour, while the Plus card at 55 euros only makes sense if you will ride the San Luca Express and the City Red Bus.

The Bologna story

Bologna is Italy's food-first city: medieval towers above a grid of porticoes, the oldest university in Europe, and a market quarter where the aperitivo board counts as dinner. The portico network makes walking painless in any weather, the food scene deserves its reputation, and the city works as a trip of its own or the tastiest stop on a Milan to Florence run.

The verdict in 30 seconds

It depends

It depends on how many included sights you will actually use. The Easy card at 35 euros pays off once you add two or three paid museums on top of the Discover Bologna tour, while the Plus card at 55 euros only makes sense if you will ride the San Luca Express and the City Red Bus.

Go if

  • You plan the Discover Bologna tour plus at least two paid museums
  • You are staying two or three days and want a museum-heavy itinerary
  • You want one prepaid bundle with a long 15-day validity window

Skip if

  • Your plan is mostly food, markets, porticoes and free churches
  • You qualify for reduced or free entry anyway, for example under 25s at the Pinacoteca
  • You only want the Clock Tower or San Luca and would buy them cheaper standalone

What travelers report

Based on 8 traveler reports (Nov 2024 to Aug 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 0 were negative.

What people like

  • The Clock Tower terraces, a headline inclusion, give one of the best views in town, according to one traveler who climbed it.
  • Travelers found the included museums, from the Pinacoteca to the Archaeological Museum and Palazzo Pepoli, rewarding, with one pair surprised by the size of the Egyptian and Roman collections.
  • One traveler found the card a good deal because the walking tour comes with the museums, and saw the museums nearly empty while the streets were busy.

What people complain about

  • Several of the included museums are small and quick to see, one couple noted after visiting them over four weeks.
  • A card holder doubted it pays on a free museum Sunday, when some entries cost nothing anyway.

How to do it right

  • Count the included sights you will really visit and add their official prices; the Easy card is 35 euros and the Plus card 55 euros.
  • Buy the card on the Bologna Welcome site; it arrives by email after purchase.
  • Book the Discover Bologna walk, the Clock Tower and any bike rental straight away, since all three need a reservation made with the instructions sent after purchase.
  • Check the walk's language before booking: from September 21, 2026 to January 10, 2027 the Monday to Wednesday 10:30 tour runs in Italian only.
  • Start the clock with your first on-site use; the card then lasts up to 15 days or until each service has been used once.
  • Plan museum days around closing days, since the official page says some museums close on Mondays and others on Tuesdays.
  • Show the card at each museum entrance; services without a booking need only the card.

The trap to avoid

Buying it for a one-day stop on a Monday or Tuesday. The official page says some included museums close on Mondays and others on Tuesdays, and each service admits you once, so the bundle can sit half unused on the only day you have.

Why this verdict

The Bologna Welcome Card is a sightseeing bundle rather than a transport pass, so the test is simple: list the paid sights you will really visit, add their official prices, and compare with 35 euros for Easy or 55 euros for Plus. Two inclusions carry most of the value. The Discover Bologna walking tour is 18 euros on its own and the Clock Tower with the Municipal Art Collections is 10, so those two plus any paid museum take Easy past even. A museum-forward stay that adds the Pinacoteca, Palazzo Pepoli and the Archaeological Museum to the walk reaches 50 euros of entry fees.

The light day is where it fails. The walk, the tower and MAMbo come to 34 euros, one euro under the card, and anyone who came for food, markets, porticoes and free churches will use even less. That is why the verdict is depends rather than go.

Plus is narrower still. Its extra 20 euros buy the San Luca Express, the City Red Bus loop and the San Petronio chapels, which cost 36 euros at full price. It pays only if you want both vehicle tours. Travelers who plan to walk the portico up to San Luca will not use the train.

The traveler reports lean positive on what the card covers. One traveler who bought it for an October 2024 trip called it a good deal because the walking tour comes with the museums, and found the museums nearly empty while the streets were crowded. Other reports praise the Clock Tower terraces as one of the best views in town and the Pinacoteca and the Archaeological Museum as larger than expected. The reservations are about fit: a couple who worked through the included museums over four weeks noted that several are small and quick to see, and the same forum card holder doubted the card pays on a free museum Sunday.

Timing and booking

Three services need a reservation, made with the instructions emailed after purchase: the Discover Bologna walk, the Clock Tower and bike rental. Book them first, since they run on fixed slots. The walk leaves from the Bologna Welcome info point at Piazza Maggiore 1/e and lasts two hours; between September 21, 2026 and January 10, 2027 the Monday to Wednesday morning walk runs in Italian only, with Italian and English on Thursday afternoons and Friday to Sunday. The Clock Tower page says the top terrace is reached by a narrow staircase and is closed to children under 8.

The 15-day clock starts at your first on-site use and each service admits you once, so the card suits a two or three day stay with museum mornings. The official page warns that some museums close on Mondays and others on Tuesdays, which is the main way a short visit loses value.

What to combine

Pair the card’s walk and tower with the Pinacoteca and Palazzo Pepoli on a weekday, and keep a separate morning for the Asinelli Tower and the Quadrilatero market, which sit outside the bundle. If you plan to see San Luca, the free portico walk is the alternative to the Plus card’s train.

Questions

How much does the Bologna Welcome Card cost?

The Easy card is 35 euros and the Plus card is 55 euros on the official Bologna Welcome site, checked 2026-10-19. The card is sent by email after purchase.

Is the Bologna Welcome Card worth it?

Easy pays off once you use the Discover Bologna walk (18 euros) and the Clock Tower (10 euros) plus one more paid museum. A traveler who used it on an October 2024 trip called it a good deal because the walk is included, but a light day of the walk, tower and one small museum comes to 34 euros, just under the card.

How long is the card valid?

Up to 15 days from the first service you use on site, or until you have used every included service once.

Does the card include public transport?

No. Easy includes city bike rental, and Plus adds the City Red Bus tour and the San Luca Express, but neither covers city buses or the airport link.

What does the Plus card add?

The San Petronio chapels, the City Red Bus open-top tour and the San Luca Express train, on top of everything in Easy. Their full prices add up to 36 euros, so Plus pays its extra 20 euros only if you want both vehicle tours.

Do you need to book anything?

Yes. The Discover Bologna walk, the Clock Tower climb and the bike rental need a reservation; the museums need only the card at the door. The Clock Tower page says children under 8 cannot go up to the top terrace.
