Amsterdam / The verdict

Is Keukenhof worth a trip from Amsterdam?

Yes, if your trip falls inside the short spring season (18 March to 9 May in 2027): the gardens win over most travelers, and an early weekday slot avoids the midday crowds they complain about.

The Amsterdam story

Amsterdam is built for wandering: canal rings that look painted, gabled houses and bikes everywhere, with a world-class museum haul packed into a centre crossed on foot in half an hour. The Jordaan's cafes and the canal belt's quiet streets are as much the attraction as the Rijksmuseum, and the city is easy to love in almost any weather.

The verdict in 30 seconds

Go

Yes, if your trip falls inside the short spring season (18 March to 9 May in 2027): the gardens win over most travelers, and an early weekday slot avoids the midday crowds they complain about.

Go if

  • Your Amsterdam dates fall between 18 March and 9 May 2027, when the park is open
  • You can arrive near the 8:00 opening or after 16:00 on a weekday
  • You enjoy formal gardens and flower displays and can give the trip half a day or more

Skip if

  • You are visiting Amsterdam outside the spring season, since the park is closed the rest of the year
  • You mainly want wide open tulip fields, which are the private farms around the park
  • You can only go around midday on a weekend or holiday and dislike crowds

What travelers report

Based on 16 traveler reports (Mar 2025 to Sep 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 1 was negative.

What people like

  • The sheer scale and color of the flower beds win over most travelers, including some who expected to be let down.
  • Arriving near opening gives space for photos and a calmer walk before the crowds build.
  • The combi ticket and bus logistics from Amsterdam feel easy to several travelers.
  • Indoor pavilions, especially the 2026 orchid show, add something to see on cold or wet days.

What people complain about

  • The park gets crowded from late morning, with lines for food, toilets, photo spots and the windmill.
  • Return bus queues and full buses at busy times add time to the day.
  • It is a landscaped park, and travelers expecting open tulip fields feel misled.
  • Entry, parking and food add up, and some travelers call it a one-time visit.

How to do it right

  • Buy your ticket only on keukenhof.nl, which the park names as its only official ticket site and warns about fake sellers.
  • Pick a combi ticket on the official site if you are not driving: it bundles return bus or train travel with park entry, and the bus stops outside the main entrance.
  • Choose a slot before 10:30 or after 16:00 on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, the times the official FAQ lists as quieter.
  • Aim for mid-April or later if large tulips matter most; the official FAQ says early season shows crocuses, daffodils, hyacinths and early tulips, with the larger tulips blooming later.
  • Bring a debit or credit card, since the park is cashless, and pack your own lunch for the picnic area if you want to skip the restaurant queues.
  • View the bulb fields around the park from the road only; the fields are private farms and walking in them is not allowed.

The trap to avoid

Arriving late morning on a weekend puts you in the park at the time travelers describe as packed, with queues for the return bus, food and even the windmill stairs.

Why this verdict

The reports split on crowds far more than on the gardens. Most writers, including the Dutch locals who would send visitors elsewhere, call the flower beds beautiful. The complaints are about when people went: travelers who arrived near opening describe room for photos, while those in the park from late morning onward describe packed paths, food lines, a queue for the windmill stairs and long lines for the return bus. The park itself reported more than 1.4 million visitors in its eight-week 2026 season, so the crowding is structural, and timing is the fix. That is why the verdict is go, with an early weekday slot as the condition.

The one negative report and several mixed ones share a second theme: expectations. Keukenhof is a landscaped park showing 7 million bulbs from about 100 growers, with more than 20 flower shows in its pavilions. It is not a tulip field. The wide striped fields in photos belong to farms around Lisse, which you may photograph from the road but not walk into. Travelers who wanted those fields and got a curated garden felt misled; travelers who wanted a garden were happy.

Several writers call it a one-time visit, and that is a fair reading of the evidence. It suits a first spring trip to the Netherlands. A repeat visitor with limited time may get more from a day in the bulb region by bike.

Timing and tickets

The season is fixed and short: 18 March to 9 May 2027. Bloom depends on the weather, and the official FAQ says the early weeks favor crocuses, daffodils and hyacinths, with the larger tulips later. Reports from the first days of April 2026 describe a cold, grey visit where the indoor orchid show carried the day, while the mid-April reports describe full color. Book on keukenhof.nl only, since the park warns about fake ticket sites. 2027 prices were not yet published when checked, so compare the official combi ticket with driving or a coach tour once sales open. A coach tour from Amsterdam Centraal saves the transfer at Europaplein, but it fixes your arrival time, and one traveler noticed tour buses arriving from around 10:00, when the park got busier.

Questions

When is Keukenhof open in 2027?

The official site lists 18 March to 9 May 2027, daily from 8:00 to 19:00, with the entrance closing at 18:15. The park is closed outside those dates.

How much are 2027 tickets?

The official site had not published 2027 prices when checked in September 2026. It says 2027 tickets go on sale online at keukenhof.nl in the autumn (its English FAQ says mid-October, its Dutch page mid-November).

How do you get there from Amsterdam without a car?

The official site sells combi tickets that include return bus or train travel plus park entry, with the bus stopping outside the main entrance. The park reports that about 45% of its 2026 visitors came by bus. Travelers who used the bus from Europaplein near RAI describe full buses and queues of 15 to 30 minutes at busy times.

When is the best time to go?

Bloom depends on the weather, the official FAQ says: early weeks bring crocuses, daffodils, hyacinths and early tulips, and larger tulips follow later. It lists Monday to Wednesday, and times before 10:30 or after 16:00, as generally quieter.

Can you bring food and luggage?

Yes. The official FAQ allows your own food in the picnic area and on benches, though not in the restaurants or on their terraces. Lockers for small items and a luggage depot near the main entrance are free.

Can you walk into the tulip fields?

No. The official FAQ says the surrounding bulb fields are private property and walking in them damages the bulbs; photos from the road are allowed. Bikes can be rented at the P1 parking lot to ride past the fields.
