The Amsterdam story

Amsterdam is built for wandering: canal rings that look painted, gabled houses and bikes everywhere, with a world-class museum haul packed into a centre crossed on foot in half an hour. The Jordaan's cafes and the canal belt's quiet streets are as much the attraction as the Rijksmuseum, and the city is easy to love in almost any weather.

The verdict in 30 seconds

Go

Yes, for most visitors: 16.50 euros online buys a 360 degree view from 100 meters across the water from Centraal, and the optional swing is the part travelers talk about most.

Go if

  • You want a high view over the old center, the IJ and the harbor in one stop
  • You would pay 7.50 euros more for about a minute on a swing over the edge of the roof
  • You can go on a clear day or near sunset, when some visitors describe the best light

Skip if

  • Heights or open edges make you anxious, since the official site says you can only go up by lift and the top deck is open-air
  • You mainly want clean photos, because the outdoor deck is fenced and phones are not allowed on the swing
  • A family ticket plus extras would push the total past what a view is worth to you

What it costs

  • Adult entrance, bought online: €16.50 (18.50 at the box office; includes the free digital souvenir and audio tour). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
  • Child entrance (ages 4 to 12), bought online: €10.50 (12.50 at the box office). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
  • Over the Edge swing add-on, bought online: €7.50 (8.50 at the box office; on top of an entrance ticket; minimum height 1.20 m). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
  • LOOKOUT + Thrill (entrance, swing and VR ride), bought online: €29.50 (35.50 at the box office). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
  • Family ticket, 2 adults and 2 children, bought online: €46 (62 at the box office). Official source, checked Oct 2026.

What travelers report

Based on 12 traveler reports (Nov 2024 to Sep 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 0 were negative.

What people like

  • The 360 degree view takes in Centraal Station, the old center's spires and the IJ.
  • The swing gives travelers a short, scary thrill that most say they are glad they tried.
  • Two reports single out the light show in the lift as part of the fun.
  • Evening and sunset visits get warm reports for the light over the city.

What people complain about

  • The outdoor deck is fenced and netted, so clear photos need one of the openings.
  • The swing ride is short: one family counted about a minute and found it less spectacular than it looks from below.
  • Phones are not allowed on the swing, and ride photos and videos are not taken after dark.
  • Extras such as the swing, VR ride and food add up for families, one family report notes.

How to do it right

  • Buy on the official site, where online tickets are 2 euros cheaper than at the box office.
  • Add the swing when you book if you want it, and arrive at least half an hour before your slot as the official FAQ asks.
  • Take the free F3 ferry from behind Centraal to Buiksloterweg and walk left along the water to the entrance opposite the EYE Film Museum.
  • Go in daylight if you want the swing photos, which the official FAQ says are only taken while it is light.
  • Bring a card, since the venue is cards only, and leave bags aside for the swing, which allows no phones or rucksacks.

The trap to avoid

Buying at the box office: the same entrance ticket costs 2 euros more there than online, and the swing add-on costs 1 euro more.

What to do instead

Why this verdict

The reports lean positive: 9 of the 12 are positive and three are mixed. What travelers praise is consistent. The view takes in Centraal Station, the old center’s church spires and the IJ, and two writers single out the light show in the lift as part of the fun. For 16.50 euros online, that makes it a fair price for a view you cannot get from street level in the old center.

The swing is the part travelers write about most, and the reports explain why it splits people. Riders describe the first seconds as frightening and the rest as a thrill they are glad they tried, and one hosted visitor adds that it may not suit smaller children. One family skipped it on the spot, which suggests that visiting for the view alone works fine. Treat the swing as an optional 7.50 euro extra, not as the price of admission.

The mixed report is worth reading before you go. A family who rode the swing found it less spectacular than it looks from the ground, with only about 60 seconds of swinging. Two other reports mention that the open-air deck is netted or fenced, with openings left for photos. If a clean skyline photo is your goal, plan on the gaps in the netting.

Families should add up the whole visit. Children aged 4 to 12 pay less, but the swing and VR ride each cost extra, have a 1.20 m minimum height, and food at the top adds more. The family who skipped the swing advises comparing ticket options for exactly this reason, since extras raise a family’s total.

Timing and tickets

Buy direct: the official shop sells the same tickets 2 euros cheaper than the box office, and the swing slot is booked with your entry time. Visitors who went around sunset or after dark describe good light over the city, but the official FAQ says swing photos are only taken in daylight, so pick your slot by which matters more. The free ferry from behind Centraal makes it an easy add-on to a day in the center.

Questions

How long does the swing last?

The official FAQ says a ride takes about a minute. Up to two people ride at a time, the combined weight limit is 200 kg, and riders must be at least 1.20 m tall.

Can you take your phone on the swing?

No. The official rules bar phones, rucksacks, flip-flops and loose items on the swing. Staff film and photograph your ride and you can download the files free, with high-resolution versions for a fee, but only while it is still light.

Is A'DAM Lookout included in the I amsterdam City Card?

Yes. The official FAQ says I amsterdam City Card and Go City Pass holders enter free without booking a time slot. The swing and other add-ons are paid separately.

What are the opening hours?

The official site lists daily opening from 10:00 to 22:00, with last admission at 21:00. Check the site before you go, since hours can change.

Is there a way up without the flashing-light lift?

Yes, for visitors with epilepsy the official FAQ says a staff-operated lift without flashing lights is available if you tell the ticket office. The stairs are for emergencies, so you go up by lift either way.
