Utrecht / The verdict
Is the Miffy Museum worth it?
Yes if you are traveling with a 2 to 6 year old: ten rooms of hands-on play built entirely at toddler height in Dick Bruna's home city. Adults without small children should skip it.
By The Real Traveler Experiences team.

The Utrecht story
Utrecht is the canal city without the crowds: the Oudegracht runs below street level so you eat and drink on waterside wharf terraces that feel secret, the Dom Tower rises over a medieval core that still belongs to locals and students, and De Haar, the country's largest and most lavish castle, sits at the edge of town. The guided climb up the Dom's 465 steps is carried by the storytelling on each landing, and even the Railway Museum wins people over with a working 19th-century terminus full of locomotives.

It depends
Yes if you are traveling with a 2 to 6 year old: ten rooms of hands-on play built entirely at toddler height in Dick Bruna's home city. Adults without small children should skip it.
Go if
- families with children aged 2 to 6, the museum's exact design range
- parents of sensitive or sensory-needing children, thanks to the museum's low-stimulus cabins and timed entry that keeps crowds manageable
- Miffy and Dick Bruna fans willing to see it through a child's eyes
Skip if
- adults or teens traveling without young children
- families whose kids have passed about age 7, who outgrow it fast
- drop-in visitors, since tickets are online-only and timeslots mandatory

- The 2023 rebuild nearly doubled it and added the farm, shop and film rooms (3 of 13 reports)
- Museumkaart entry plus the child-friendly cafe make repeat visits cheap (2 of 13 reports)

What people complain about

- Adults pay the same 14 euros to accompany a toddler (2 of 13 reports)
- The small rooms feel crowded on weekend afternoons (2 of 13 reports)
How to do it right
- Book a timeslot at tickets.nijntjemuseum.nl; sales are online only and every visitor needs one, babies included
- Pick a morning slot: toddler energy peaks early and the museum is calmest after opening
- Look for the low-stimulus mornings on the museum calendar if your child needs a quieter visit
- Plan about two hours for the ten themed rooms plus the cafe
- Pair it with the Centraal Museum across the street on a Museumkaart if the adults want their own hour
- Walk about 20 minutes from Utrecht Centraal or take the bus to the Museum Quarter
The trap to avoid
Treating it as a general museum. It is engineered for ages 2 to 6: older children finish in under an hour, adults pay the same 14 euros to supervise, and nobody gets in without a pre-booked timeslot because there are no sales at the door.
What to do instead
Why this verdict
The Miffy Museum earns a depends because the answer changes completely with the children in tow. For a 2 to 6 year old this is close to the best museum in the Netherlands: ten rooms of Dick Bruna’s world rebuilt at toddler height, where everything is meant to be touched, opened, climbed on and played with. For anyone older it is a very expensive hour of standing around.
The 2023 rebuild is the reason to go now. The museum nearly doubled to about 1,500 square meters and added a farm room, a Betje Big shop scene, a 360-degree film room, a larger cafe and low-stimulus cabins for children who need a break. Parents in the reports keep repeating the same point: this is the anti-museum, built for touching rather than looking.
The discipline is real though. Entry runs on timeslots only, booked online in advance; there are no door sales and even babies and cardholders need a slot. Prices checked in October 2026: 14 euros for ages 2 to 6 and for adults, 10 euros for 7 to 17s, free under 2 and for Museumkaart, VriendenLoterij and U-Pas holders.
Timing and tickets
Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:00; closed on New Year’s Day, King’s Day and Christmas Day. Morning slots are the smart play for toddler energy, and the museum runs low-stimulus mornings for sensitive children. Most families spend about two hours inside. If the adults want their own culture fix, the Centraal Museum sits across the street and takes the same Museumkaart.
