Munich / The verdict
Neuschwanstein from Munich: tour or on your own?
Go on your own: book the timed castle ticket on the official shop, then use a Bayern-Ticket for the regional train to Füssen and the bus to Hohenschwangau. A guided day tour is the runner-up if you want the transport handled, but check whether it includes castle entry.

The Munich story
Munich is Germany's polished southern capital: a compact Altstadt of church towers, the Residenz's long Antiquarium hall, the Viktualienmarkt grazing circuit, beer halls and beer gardens treated as civic institutions, and the English Garden running through the middle with surfers on the Eisbach. The centre is walkable end to end, the Alps start on the horizon, and the Hofbrauhaus brass band is exactly the cliche you came for.

Our pick: On your own by train and bus (runner-up: Guided day tour from Munich)
Go on your own: book the timed castle ticket on the official shop, then use a Bayern-Ticket for the regional train to Füssen and the bus to Hohenschwangau. A guided day tour is the runner-up if you want the transport handled, but check whether it includes castle entry.
Go if
- You are based in Munich and want to see Neuschwanstein in one day
- You can fix your date early enough to book a timed castle ticket online
- You are deciding between organizing the train and bus yourself and paying for a tour
Skip if
- Your only free day is soon and the official shop shows no tickets, and you would only go for the interior
- You are already staying in Füssen or Schwangau, so there is no day trip to plan
- Stairs and a steep uphill walk are a problem for someone in your group and you have not checked the carriage and elevator options
The options
On your own by train and bus Go
Travelers who can book a castle time slot ahead and want the lowest official cost and their own schedule.
Good
- A Bayern-Ticket covers the regional train from Munich and the bus from Füssen station, and up to five people can share one ticket.
- You choose your train and castle slot, so you can add Hohenschwangau Castle, the Alpsee or Füssen.
- The castle visit itself is the same guided tour run by the castle, whoever brings you.
Watch out
- On weekdays the Bayern-Ticket is valid only from 9:00, which rules out the earliest trains.
- You have to plan the train, the bus from Füssen and the uphill leg yourself; one couple counted about three hours from Munich station to the castle.
- Online castle tickets cannot be changed or refunded if your train runs late.

Guided day tour from Munich It depends
Travelers who want transport and timing handled and are happy with a fixed schedule.
Good
- No train or bus planning; the operator handles the route and schedule.
- Some tours add a bike ride or a lake stop in the same day.
Watch out
- Some tours do not include castle entry, so you may still need your own timed ticket.
- Inside the castle you join the castle's own guided tour, so the tour guide adds nothing there.
- The schedule is fixed, so there is no lingering at the lake or the viewpoints.

Turning up without a timed castle ticket Skip
Only travelers staying near Hohenschwangau who can be at the Ticket Center when it opens at 8:00 and are happy to see only the outside if it sells out.
Good
- You can still walk up to the main gate and the exterior grounds without a ticket.
- Hohenschwangau Castle and the Museum of the Bavarian Kings are nearby alternatives.
Watch out
- The official site says same-day tickets are limited and sold out most days by late morning.
- On a weekday Bayern-Ticket you cannot leave Munich before 9:00, so a day-tripper arrives after the Ticket Center has opened.
- Neuschwanstein can be visited only on a guided tour, so if same-day tickets are gone you see only the outside.

What travelers report
Based on 12 traveler reports (Jan 2025 to Feb 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 1 was negative.
What people like
- Travelers praise the setting and the views around the castle, including one who found the interior tour underwhelming.
- Two writers recommend the Bayern-Ticket to save money, and one found it also covered the bus from Füssen.
- Two writers who took guided bus and bike day tours from Munich called the day a highlight.
- Two writers found the castle's own guided tour well paced or the guide excellent.
What people complain about
- Timed tickets sell out weeks ahead; one writer refreshed the shop daily to get a slot, and a family that could not get tickets in December came back months later.
- The Marienbrücke is packed in busy months, and one writer describes long late-morning queues for the shuttle bus.
- The interior tour is short and can feel rushed, and one couple found the interior plain.
- Visitors in December and April found the Marienbrücke or the trail to its viewpoint closed for snow.
- One couple found poor signage and no evident shuttle on the leg from Füssen to the castle.
How to do it right
- Book the timed Neuschwanstein ticket on the official Hohenschwangau shop as soon as your date is fixed, and add child tickets in the same order.
- Buy a Bayern-Ticket on bahn.de; on weekdays it is valid from 9:00, so pick a regional train that leaves Munich after that.
- At Füssen station take bus RVA 73 or 78 to the Hohenschwangau castles stop at Alpseestrasse, about 15 minutes.
- Allow time for the climb: 30 to 40 minutes on foot, or the shuttle bus or horse carriage when they run.
- Leave large bags and hiking backpacks behind, since the castle does not admit them.
The trap to avoid
Counting on the Ticket Center: it sells a limited number of same-day tickets from 8:00, the official site says they are gone most days by late morning, and a weekday Bayern-Ticket cannot leave Munich before 9:00.
Why this verdict
The reports split over the castle itself, and the route draws fewer complaints. Of the 12 logged reports, 1 is negative and 6 are mixed, and the negatives are about crowds on the Marienbrücke, a short interior tour and tickets that were already gone. None of those gets better with a coach tour: inside, every visitor joins the same guided tour run by the castle, so a tour company adds transport and timing and leaves the visit itself unchanged. The route complaints are the time it takes (one couple counted about three hours from Munich station to the castle) and a poorly signposted leg from Füssen.
That makes the choice mostly about money and planning. For one adult, the official costs of going alone are a 34 euro Bayern-Ticket plus the castle ticket and the online fee, and the Bayern-Ticket gets cheaper per person for groups of up to five. A tour makes sense when nobody in the group wants to handle trains, or when you want a bike ride or lake stop added on the same day; the two writers who took that kind of tour were happy with it. Read what it includes, because one of those tours left castle entry to be paid in cash on the day.
The real risk is the ticket. Three writers found the official shop sold out weeks ahead; one refreshed daily for days to land a slot, and a family who could not get tickets in December came back months later. The official site says same-day tickets are limited and gone by late morning on most days. For a day-tripper on a weekday Bayern-Ticket, which starts at 9:00, turning up without a slot is a poor bet, which is why that option is a skip.
Timing and tickets
Season changes the day. Visitors in December and April found the Marienbrücke or the trail to it closed for snow, and the official site says the shuttle bus runs only in suitable weather. If the bridge photo matters, check the current information on the Hohenschwangau homepage that morning. In busy months the complaints cluster around the packed bridge and late-morning shuttle queues, so an early slot helps. Online tickets cannot be changed, so leave a buffer between your train and your time slot.

Questions
Can you buy Neuschwanstein tickets on the day?
Only in limited numbers. The Ticket Center in Hohenschwangau sells same-day tickets from 8:00 on a first come, first served basis, and the official site says they sell out most days by late morning. Tickets cannot be reserved by phone or email, and there is no waiting list.
Does the Bayern-Ticket cover the bus from Füssen to the castle?
bahn.de lists the Bayern-Ticket as valid on almost all regular bus lines in Bavaria and publishes a list of exceptions; the Füssen to Hohenschwangau buses are not on the March 2026 list. The castle site names buses RVA 73 and RVA 78 from Füssen station, with a journey of about 15 minutes.
Is the Marienbrücke open?
The official FAQ says the bridge can currently be visited, but in winter it sometimes closes because of ice and snow. The Hohenschwangau homepage posts current information, so check it on the morning you go.
Do guided tours from Munich include the castle ticket?
It varies, so read the inclusions before you book. Neuschwanstein can be visited only as part of the castle's own guided tour, so a tour company arranges transport and timing while the visit inside stays the same.
Can you change or cancel an online castle ticket?
No. The official shop excludes online tickets from exchange (date, time or language) and from return, and you accept those terms when you order. Leave a buffer between your train and your slot.
