Malta / The verdict
Is the Blue Lagoon on Comino worth it?
Worth it on the right terms: the water matches the photos, but stepping ashore needs a free pre-booked landing pass and reports describe the shore as crowded once day boats arrive. Go early, or pair a boat trip with a coastal hike.

The Malta story
Malta packs an absurd amount into 316 square kilometres: a baroque capital built by crusading knights, the Barrakka panorama over the Grand Harbour, St John's co-cathedral's barrel vault and 400-tomb inlaid floor, temples older than the pyramids at the Hypogeum, Mdina's free walled ramparts, and lagoon water warm enough to swim from April to October. English is an official language, the ferries are cheap, and a day on Gozo or the Blue Lagoon is the island's deep breath.
The verdict in 30 seconds
It depends
Worth it on the right terms: the water matches the photos, but stepping ashore needs a free pre-booked landing pass and reports describe the shore as crowded once day boats arrive. Go early, or pair a boat trip with a coastal hike.
Go if
- Swimmers and snorkelers; reports single out the clear water
- Day-trippers who book an early landing slot or take a boat trip that adds swim stops
- Hikers; two reports favor Comino's coastal trails and quieter beaches over the lagoon shore
- Travelers combining Gozo and Comino in one day, as three reports did
Skip if
- You picture a quiet beach; reports describe the shore as packed, loud and short of space once the day boats arrive
- You plan to land without a pass; the official FAQ says only a valid QR code gives access and anyone without one may be removed by patrolling officers
- You want a sunbed or a place to put your things; reports describe loungers rented out and every rock taken
- Your day is fixed around a midday arrival; reports put the calm window before roughly 09:00 to 10:00
What it costs
- Blue Lagoon landing pass (Book, Protect, Enjoy), per person: €0 (Mandatory to step ashore; free QR code for one of three slots (08:00-13:00, 13:30-17:30, 18:00-22:00), scanned and swapped for a wristband before disembarking. Bookable up to 2 months ahead for up to 4 people per reservation; under-5s exempt with a parent or guardian). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
- Comino Ferries round trip, Malta to Blue Lagoon, adult: €15 (Official ticket page lists the adult round trip from Malta; ferry tickets are separate from the landing pass). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
- Comino Ferry Co-Op round trip, Cirkewwa or Marfa to Blue Lagoon, adult: €14 (Online price saves EUR 1 versus the quay; tickets are open-dated and unused tickets do not expire. Official page could not be loaded on 2026-10-09; price as last confirmed). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
What travelers report
Based on 11 traveler reports (Mar 2025 to Jul 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 2 were negative.
What people like
- The water is clear and as advertised (3 reports)
- The shore can be calm early, until about 09:00 to 10:00 (4 reports)
- Boat trips with swim stops make an easy full day (2 reports)
- The island beyond the lagoon rewards a walk: coastal trails and quieter beaches (2 reports)
What people complain about
- The shore gets packed, with loungers rented out and every rock taken (7 reports)
- Pass enforcement may be loose; one blogger wrote that the wristband check may or may not happen (1 report)
- Commercial clutter: kiosks, many commercial boats and loud music (5 reports)
How to do it right
- Book the free landing pass first: pick a slot at blcomino.com, get the QR code by email, and it is scanned and swapped for a wristband before you disembark
- The official FAQ says anyone who steps on land needs the code, including on tour and private boats
- Cheapest way over is the shuttle ferry from Cirkewwa or Marfa, which reports put at about 15 to 20 minutes; the official page lists EUR 15 for an adult round trip, and Gozo departures leave from Mgarr
- Take the earliest slot: one traveler who left Gozo at 7:30 had the lagoon nearly to themselves at 8:00, and other reports put the calm window at before about 10:00
- For flexibility, one report booked both a morning and an afternoon slot
- Treat the lagoon as the anchor, not the whole island; reports favor the coastal hike and quieter spots over the main beach
The trap to avoid
Turning up at midday without a pass expecting a beach day. The official FAQ says there is no walk-up entry, and reports describe the shore as packed and loud with loungers already rented out.
What to do instead
Why this verdict
The water is not the argument. Three of the 11 logged reports call it clear or just as advertised. What splits opinion is the shore: seven describe it as packed or chaotic, with loungers rented out and every rock taken, and five mention loud music, kiosks or commercial boats. A free landing pass is now required to step ashore, with a cap of 4,000 people at one time described in several reports, but a June 2026 news visit still found a dozen kiosks and 8 to 12 commercial boats at the shore.
So the verdict depends on the visit you plan, not on the lagoon itself. The happier reports share a pattern: they arrived early, went on a boat tour with several swim stops (one of them a hosted private trip), or used the lagoon as a starting point for a coastal hike. One traveler who left Gozo at 7:30 had the lagoon nearly to themselves at 8:00, then watched the first party boats arrive a little after 9:00 and fill the loungers. The unhappier reports describe arriving later and expecting a beach.
If you want the famous swim, book the first slot and be on the water before about 09:00. If the crowd is your main worry, a boat trip with swim stops, or a ferry plus a walk away from the lagoon beach, covers the highlights, though anyone who steps ashore still needs the pass.
Timing and tickets
The pass is free. Per the official FAQ, book at blcomino.com for one of three daily slots, up to two months ahead and for up to four people per reservation. Your QR code is scanned and swapped for a wristband before you disembark, and the wristband is tied to your slot. The ferry is a separate ticket: the official page lists EUR 15 for an adult round trip from Malta, checked on 2026-10-09, and reports put the crossing at roughly 15 to 20 minutes. A second operator’s ticket page could not be loaded on 2026-10-09, so its EUR 14 price is as last confirmed.

Questions
Do I need to book to visit the Blue Lagoon?
Yes, to step on land. The official FAQ describes a free QR code for one of three daily slots, bookable up to two months ahead for up to four people per reservation, which is scanned and swapped for a wristband. Children under 5 with a parent or guardian are exempt. Anyone ashore without a valid code may be removed by patrolling officers.
Is the Blue Lagoon still crowded with the pass system?
Reports say yes. Several describe a 4,000-person cap. A June 2026 news visit found the landing area calmer until about 10:00 but a dozen kiosks and 8 to 12 commercial boats at the shore, and a July 2026 blog found every rock taken. Reports that found calm did so before about 09:00 to 10:00.
How much does the Blue Lagoon ferry cost?
The official ticket page lists EUR 15 for an adult round trip from Malta, checked on 2026-10-09, and reports put the crossing at roughly 15 to 20 minutes. The landing pass is free and ferry tickets are separate. Boat trips from other harbors add swim stops, so check the operator's own page for current prices.
Is the Blue Lagoon worth it or overrated?
Reports land on worth it with conditions. Seven of 11 describe a packed or chaotic shore, three call the water clear or as advertised, and most advise arriving before about 10:00 or walking away from the lagoon beach.
What else is on Comino besides the Blue Lagoon?
Reports mention coastal trails, quieter beaches such as Santa Marija Bay, the Crystal Lagoon and a 17th-century tower.
What are the Blue Lagoon time slots?
Morning 08:00 to 13:00, afternoon 13:30 to 17:30 and sunset 18:00 to 22:00, per the official FAQ. The FAQ says the 30-minute difference on the booking form is a boat maneuvering allowance, and visitors who arrive late get the rest of their slot.
