Malaga / The verdict
Malaga airport to the city: which way?
The C1 commuter train is the cheapest and fastest way in for most arrivals; only overnight landings, heavy luggage, or a hotel far from a station argue otherwise.

The Malaga story
Malaga has grown well past its role as the Costa del Sol airport: the old town now carries the [Picasso Museum](/malaga/picasso-museum-malaga/) plus Carmen Thyssen and Pompidou branches, the layered climb of the [Alcazaba and Gibralfaro](/malaga/alcazaba-gibralfaro/) fortresses, market eating at [Atarazanas](/malaga/atarazanas-market/), and proper city beaches at La Malagueta, all inside a compact center of tapas bars and umbrella pines.

Our pick: Cercanías C1 train (runner-up: Line A airport bus)
The C1 commuter train is the cheapest and fastest way in for most arrivals; only overnight landings, heavy luggage, or a hotel far from a station argue otherwise.
Go if
- Daytime arrivals staying near Centro Alameda or María Zambrano
- Solo travelers and couples with carry-on luggage
- Coast-bound travelers continuing to Torremolinos, Benalmádena or Fuengirola
Skip if
- Landing between roughly 1:00 and 6:40 am, when reports say only a taxi, rideshare or transfer works
- Staying far from a station or hauling bulky luggage
- Wanting a door-to-door drop
The options
Cercanías C1 train Go
Daytime arrivals with light bags staying anywhere near Centro Alameda or María Zambrano
Good
- EUR 1.80 and about 12 minutes to the city, per the official sources
- Frequent departures through the day (one report says every 20 to 35 minutes) until just after midnight
- Contactless bank cards tap straight through the gates
Watch out
- No service between roughly 1:00 and 6:30 am, per one report
- The station is underground; the right-hand staircase heads for Fuengirola, so check the sign
- Hotels beyond a short walk of Centro Alameda (one report says about 500 m to Calle Larios) need a further leg
Line A airport bus It depends
Stays near Paseo del Parque or the port
Good
- One report says it stops near Paseo del Parque, close to the port and park, and along the Alameda
- Luggage is carried free and the fare is a flat EUR 4 paid by card or cash
- Leaves from a stop outside Arrivals
Watch out
- More than twice the train fare
- One report puts the ride at 25 to 30 minutes with 10 to 13 stops
- One report gives hours of about 7:00 am to midnight, so it does not cover overnight landings
Taxi or pre-booked transfer It depends
Late-night arrivals, groups of three or four, heavy luggage, and hotels uphill from stations
Good
- Door to door in about 15 to 20 minutes, per one report
- Works around the clock; one report says the rank has cars at all hours and that rideshare and pre-booked transfers also run overnight
- Tariffs and supplements are published by the airport operator
Watch out
- Official minimum is EUR 17.37; one report puts a typical centre fare at EUR 20 to 25 in daytime
- Night, weekend and holiday tariffs start higher
- More expensive than the train for a solo traveler or couple with light bags

What travelers report
Based on 5 traveler reports (Jan 2025 to Aug 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 0 were negative.
What people like
- 3 of the 5 logged reports put the C1 ride to central Malaga at about 12 minutes.
- 1 logged report calls the C1 the fastest and cheapest way in, and says tapping a contactless card at the gate is quickest after a busy flight lands.
- 2 of the 5 logged reports describe arrival processing as quick or the airport as well organized, including EES registration in about 10 minutes.
What people complain about
- 1 logged report notes the C1 stops between about 1:00 and 6:30 am, so late landings need a taxi or rideshare.
- 1 logged report warns the line runs only between Málaga and Fuengirola, leaving Marbella, Estepona and Nerja without a train.
- 1 logged report says the rideshare pickup is up on the Departures level, not at Arrivals, and that the two station staircases are easy to mix up.
- 1 logged forum report says arrival queues on earlier trips were longer than in April 2026.
How to do it right
- Leave arrivals at Terminal 3, follow the Cercanías or Renfe signs and take the escalator or lift down to the underground station.
- Buy a zones 1-2 single (EUR 1.80) at the machines, or tap a contactless card or phone at the gates, and validate on exit as well as entry.
- At the platforms, use the staircase for the city (reports say it is the left one) and take the C1 toward Málaga Centro Alameda: about 8 minutes to María Zambrano and 12 to the centre, per the airport operator.
- Get off at María Zambrano for AVE trains and the bus station, or at Centro Alameda for the old town and Calle Larios.
- Check the Renfe timetable before you rely on the train: one report gives the first airport departure as 6:44 am and the last as 12:54 am, with no service from about 1:00 to 6:30 am.
- For the Line A bus, the stop is outside Arrivals and the EUR 4 fare is paid on board. For a taxi, use the rank outside Arrivals; the daytime weekday minimum is EUR 17.37.
The trap to avoid
The C1 does not run overnight (one report puts the gap at about 1:00 to 6:30 am). Landing late and counting on the train leaves you with a taxi, a rideshare or a pre-booked transfer.
Why this verdict
The Cercanías C1 is the answer for most arrivals, and the evidence we could verify points one way. It costs EUR 1.80 for the zones 1-2 single on Renfe’s fare table, and the airport operator lists about 12 minutes to the centre and 8 to María Zambrano. A travel blogger who wrote about the route calls it the option most people walk straight past, and two other writers give the same fare and time. Contactless cards and phones are accepted at the gates, so a ticket-machine queue is optional.
The Line A bus is the fallback. The airport operator lists a EUR 4 single with luggage carried free. One report puts the ride at 25 to 30 minutes with 10 to 13 stops, which suits a hotel near Paseo del Parque or the port. It does not beat the train on cost or speed.
Taxis and transfers cover the gaps. One report says no train runs between about 1:00 and 6:30 am, so a late landing means a taxi, a rideshare or a pre-booked driver. The official taxi minimum is EUR 17.37 on weekday daytime tariffs, with higher tariffs at night, on weekends and on holidays. That report puts a typical daytime ride to the centre at EUR 20 to 25.
Timing and tickets
Check the Renfe timetable for the day you land, since the first and last departures are not stated in the official text used here. For Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola the same C1 runs southwest; Marbella has no rail link and needs a coach or transfer. A writer who flew in late warns that coaches had already stopped when a 23:40 flight landed.
