Ibiza / The verdict
Is a Formentera day trip worth it?
Yes for most visitors: the fast ferry from Ibiza Town takes about 30 minutes, and visitors describe clear water and an easy day on a rented bike or scooter. The snags are busy summer boats and the vehicle rules, and the evidence log is short (4 reports), so treat this as a lean.

The Ibiza story
Ibiza is two islands in one: the party machine of San Antonio and Playa d'en Bossa, and a quieter pine-and-stone island of coves, farm restaurants and hippy heritage that most clubbers never see. The UNESCO-listed Dalt Vila citadel above Ibiza town is impressive, and the water clarity around the island rivals anywhere in the Balearics.

Go if
- Beach-first travelers: the reports describe Ses Illetes and the clear water as the point of the trip
- Independent travelers happy to cross on foot and rent a bike or scooter at La Savina
- Travelers based in Ibiza Town or Playa d'en Bossa, with the shortest crossings
- Shoulder-season visitors who want quieter beaches
Skip if
- You get seasick and your only option is a long crossing: one couple chose the 30-minute Ibiza Town ferry over the roughly 2-hour boat from Es Figueral for that reason
- You want long hours on the island but are based in San Antonio: the boat there left one traveler about 6 hours ashore after roughly 2 hours of sailing each way
- You plan to bring a car rented on Ibiza between June 1 and September 30, when the island prohibits vehicles rented outside Formentera
What it costs
- Formentera.eco vehicle authorization, car, July and August: €9 (per day, EUR 45 minimum; June and September EUR 6 a day (EUR 30 minimum); motorcycles EUR 4.50 a day in July and August; applies June 1 to September 30; vehicles rented outside the island are prohibited in that period). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
- Formentera bus, short-trip ticket: €2.25 (long-trip ticket EUR 3.20; day travel voucher EUR 15; 10-trip short pass EUR 15; free for island residents and minors). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
- Scooter rental on Formentera (Formentera Moto Rent, 125cc automatic), per day: €17.60 (from EUR 17.60 a day; other 125cc models listed from EUR 25.05 and 26.26; offices at La Savina port and Es Pujols). Official source, checked Oct 2026.

- Crowds at Ses Illetes unless you arrive early (1 report)
How to do it right
- Pick the crossing for your base: travelers took the fast ferry from Ibiza Town in about 30 minutes, while the boats from San Antonio or Es Figueral take roughly 2 hours each way.
- Cross as a foot passenger and leave any Ibiza rental car behind; from June 1 to September 30 vehicles rented outside Formentera are prohibited.
- Compare operators at the port or online before paying; one family crossing in October found a clear fare difference between two companies.
- Book a day or two ahead in summer: one traveler found the boat busy as early as May.
- Rent a scooter or bike at La Savina, or use the island bus with its EUR 15 day voucher; check bike tires before you leave the shop.
- Reach Ses Illetes early, then head south to Cap de Barbaria or La Mola in the afternoon.
- Note the last return sailing before you set off, and board early if you want an outdoor seat.
The trap to avoid
Bringing the Ibiza rental car: from June 1 to September 30 the official rules prohibit vehicles rented outside the island, and other cars need a paid formentera.eco authorization. Cross on foot and rent on Formentera instead.
What to do instead
Why this verdict
Formentera stays a yes, on a short evidence log of four visitor reports. The pattern in them is consistent: the water is the point. A couple’s day-trip video follows the ferry to La Savina, then Ses Illetes, Sant Francesc Xavier and the La Mola and Cap de Barbaria lighthouses, and its description calls the water among the clearest in the Balearics. A solo traveler who took the long boat from San Antonio still rated the day 9 out of 10, and a couple who crossed from Ibiza Town rented a scooter outside the La Savina terminal and toured the beaches.
The complaints are practical rather than about the island. One traveler was surprised how busy the boat already was in May. A family that crossed in late October found few outdoor seats on the ferry and rented bikes with soft tires and mechanical problems. The boat from San Antonio takes about 2 hours each way, which left that traveler about 6 hours ashore. And Ses Illetes, the beach everyone heads to first, gets crowded unless you arrive early. None of the four advises against the trip, which is why the verdict is go, but the log is small, so treat it as a lean.
The real way to spoil the day is the car. The official formentera.eco rules apply from June 1 to September 30: vehicles rented outside the island are prohibited, and other cars and motorcycles need a paid authorization, EUR 9 a day for a car in July and August with a EUR 45 minimum. Crossing as a foot passenger and renting on the island avoids all of it.
How to do it cheaply
Most of the cost is the ferry, and fares vary by operator, date and time, so compare before you pay. Balearia, Trasmapi and Aquabus all sell the Ibiza crossing on their own sites, and the family that crossed in October compared two operators at the port and found a clear difference for the same trip. On the island, the bus is the cheapest option: the 2026 timetable lists EUR 2.25 for a short trip, EUR 3.20 for a long one and EUR 15 for a day voucher. A 125cc automatic scooter at La Savina starts from EUR 17.60 a day on one rental company’s site, which suits two people covering the south of the island.
Timing
Go early. The fast ferry from Ibiza Town takes about 30 minutes, according to a couple who chose it over the 2-hour Es Figueral boat because of seasickness, so an early sailing gives you most of the day ashore. Head straight for Ses Illetes before the crowds build, then ride south to Cap de Barbaria or east to La Mola in the afternoon. Note your last return sailing before you set off and allow time to drop off the bike or scooter at the port. In summer, book a day or two ahead; outside the high season, the late-October family bought on the day without booking ahead.

How long does the crossing take?
About 30 minutes on the fast ferry from Ibiza Town, according to visitors who made the trip. A family that crossed with a slower operator described about an hour, and the boats from San Antonio or Es Figueral take roughly 2 hours each way.
What is the cheapest way to visit Formentera?
Cross as a foot passenger, compare the ferry operators' fares for your date, and get around by bus or bike. The island bus lists a EUR 2.25 short trip and a EUR 15 day voucher, and scooters at La Savina start from EUR 17.60 a day on the rental company's site (checked 2026-10-23).
Can I take my rental car to Formentera?
Not from June 1 to September 30: formentera.eco lists vehicles rented outside the island as prohibited in that period. Other cars need a paid authorization, EUR 9 a day in July and August with a EUR 45 minimum.
Do I need to book the ferry ahead?
In summer, it is safer. Tickets are sold online and at the port, but one traveler was surprised how busy the boat was in May and advises booking a day or two ahead, and a family that crossed in October advises booking earlier in summer.
How do I get around once I land?
Visitors rented a scooter outside the La Savina terminal or bikes on the island. The island bus runs from the port; its 2026 timetable lists a EUR 15 day voucher. Ses Illetes is the closest major beach to the port.
