Faro / The verdict
Is a Benagil Cave day trip from Faro worth it?
It depends on what you expect. The cave is still striking, and a licensed boat or guided kayak does enter for a few minutes. But since August 2024 no tour may land you on the interior sand, swimming in is banned, and from Faro it is roughly 60 km each way, so this is a planned day trip, not an easy hop.

The Faro story
Faro is the Algarve's working capital, and that is exactly the point: while the resort towns stage the postcard version of the region, Faro is the functioning Portuguese city behind it. The walled old town is pretty, the marina is where locals actually sit, and the Ria Formosa lagoon begins at the end of the street. Most visitors land at the airport and drive straight past; the ones who stop tend to wish they had planned a night.

It depends
It depends on what you expect. The cave is still striking, and a licensed boat or guided kayak does enter for a few minutes. But since August 2024 no tour may land you on the interior sand, swimming in is banned, and from Faro it is roughly 60 km each way, so this is a planned day trip, not an easy hop.
Go if
- You want to see the famous skylight chamber and accept it as a short look from the water, not a landing
- You will pair it with Praia da Marinha or the clifftop walk, which reports call the best part of the day
- You have a car or are happy on an organized road tour, since public transport is thin
- You are happy to paddle: guided kayaks get the longest time inside under the current rules
Skip if
- Your plan is built on the viral photo: standing on the sand inside the cave is banned for everyone, on every tour
- You expected to swim in; that is prohibited inside the whole Vale da Lapa to Albandeira zone
- You are relying on public transport from Faro; the beach has no direct link and the connections are slow
- Sea sickness is an issue; the boats wait and manoeuvre at the cave mouth in swell
What it costs
- Express boat tour from Benagil beach, adult: €20 (about 30 minutes, 6 to 8 caves, no stop inside Benagil; children 2-10 pay 15 EUR). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
- Traditional boat tour from Benagil beach, adult: €35 (about an hour, 15 to 20 caves; the operator states the boat visits the cave without stopping). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
- Guided kayak tour from Benagil beach, 2 hours: €35 (guided tour with the longest allowed time inside the cave). Official source, checked Oct 2026.
What travelers report
Based on 14 traveler reports (Jun 2025 to Aug 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 2 were negative.
What people like
- Reports still call the chamber one of Europe's great coastal sights even from the boat, skylight and all.
- Guided kayak groups praise the longer time inside and the smaller scale of the paddle approach.
- Travelers who paired the cave with Marinha beach or the cliff trail describe one of the best days in the Algarve.
- Several reports value the rules themselves, saying the boats now rotate rather than piling into the cave.
What people complain about
- The most common letdown is expectation: visitors arrive planning to step onto the interior sand and learn aboard that it is banned.
- Summer traffic and parking at Benagil village are described as punishing, with roads briefly closed at the worst of it.
- Swell cancels or reroutes boats without notice, and some listings count an aborted cave approach as a completed trip.
- Getting there without a car is slow; the train-plus-bus connection eats much of the day.
How to do it right
- Get to Benagil beach first: about 60 to 90 minutes by car from Faro, or the regional train to Estombar-Lagoa plus a taxi or the weekday-only local bus.
- Decide on format before paying: a licensed motor boat enters for about two minutes per boat under the rules, while guided kayaks and SUPs get about eight minutes through the other entrance.
- Book a guided kayak or SUP tour from the beach if you want the longest look; unguided rentals are banned in the cave zone.
- Wear the provided life jacket and, near the rock-fall zones, the helmet; both are required by the rules operators work under.
- Do not plan to land, swim in or float in on any gear: all three are banned inside the cave, and patrols enforce it.
- Round out the day on the Seven Hanging Valleys trail or at Praia da Marinha, which is what the happiest reports did.
The trap to avoid
The trap is the gap between the photo and the product. Since August 2024 no boat or kayak may put you on the sand inside the cave, swimming is banned and unguided kayak hire is gone, yet listings still sell the dream image. Several Faro-based cave tours are road trips that view the cave from the cliff top above, not boats that enter; read the itinerary line by line before paying.
What to do instead
Why this verdict
The cave is real and still impressive, but the trip people imagine no longer exists. Since regulations took force in August 2024, nobody may disembark on the interior sand, swimming into the cave is banned, and unguided kayak rental at Benagil beach is no longer allowed. Licensed motor boats enter through one side for roughly two minutes at a time and guided kayaks or SUPs through the other for about eight, which is the realistic ceiling on the experience. The photos that built its fame, of travelers standing on that sand, predate the rules.
From Faro there is a second catch: distance. Benagil sits about 60 km west, 60 to 90 minutes by car, and the public version is a train to Estombar-Lagoa plus an infrequent bus or taxi onward, which reports put at three to four hours each way with connections. Most visitors from Faro go by rental car or on an organized road tour, and the straightforward shape of those tours matters: several are land tours that park near the cave, walk you to the skylight viewpoint above and continue to Marinha beach, rather than boats that enter.
So the go conditions are narrow but real. Book a licensed small boat from Benagil beach or a guided kayak for the most time inside, go early, and pair the cave with the cliff-top walk or Praia da Marinha rather than treating it as the whole day. Reports that loved it did exactly that; reports that felt let down almost always came expecting to step onto the sand. If what you want is solitude on sand, the barrier islands back east deliver it for less effort.
Timing and tickets
Boats from Benagil beach run cave circuits in season from about 20 EUR for a 30-minute express and 35 EUR for an hour-long loop, while guided kayak tours run about 25 to 35 EUR for two hours. The maritime authority can close the cave entirely in heavy swell, and operators generally treat that as a completed trip, so check the weather clause before paying. Mornings are the calmest water and the thinnest queues at the beach launch.

Questions
Can you go inside Benagil Cave?
Yes, on a licensed boat tour or a guided kayak or SUP tour, but you stay on the water. Landing on the interior sand is banned for everyone, and the rules cap time inside at roughly two minutes for motor boats and eight for guided paddlers.
Can you swim into Benagil Cave?
No. Swimming is banned in the caves zone between Vale da Lapa and Albandeira, and the maritime authority patrols it; two swimmers were rescued and the ban re-publicized in July 2025.
How do you get from Faro to Benagil?
It is about 60 km, 60 to 90 minutes by car. The public option is a regional train to Estombar-Lagoa plus a taxi or the weekday-only local bus toward the beach; reports put the connected version at three to four hours each way, which is why most go by car or organized tour.
Is a boat tour or a kayak better at Benagil?
Under the current rules the guided kayaks spend longer inside, about eight minutes versus roughly two for motor boats, and enter by a different entrance. Kayaks need more effort and calm seas; boats suit mixed groups and non-paddlers.
Is Benagil worth it if you cannot land in the cave?
For most people, only as part of a wider day: the cave chamber from the water plus the cliff-top viewpoint and Marinha beach makes a strong day. As a stand-alone pilgrimage for the sand shot, no, because that shot is no longer available legally.
