Is the Tre Cime di Lavaredo loop worth it?

Yes, for most reasonably fit visitors: the scenery is the strongest in the eastern Dolomites, as long as you book the car park or shuttle in advance and start early or late in the day.

The Dolomites story

The Dolomites are the pale limestone towers of Italy's northeast that UNESCO listed for sheer geology, and the reports consistently say the landscape outruns the photos: vertical walls glowing pink at dusk, high meadows threaded with trails, and lift-served hiking that puts famous views within reach of non-climbers. Summer hiking and winter skiing share the same valleys, and via ferrata on the wartime iron routes is the signature adventure.

The verdict in 30 seconds

Go

Yes, for most reasonably fit visitors: the scenery is the strongest in the eastern Dolomites, as long as you book the car park or shuttle in advance and start early or late in the day.

Go if

  • You can walk about 10 km on rocky mountain paths
  • You can book a parking slot or a shuttle seat ahead of time
  • You can start early in the morning or visit in September
  • You are based in Cortina, Dobbiaco, Misurina or Auronzo

Skip if

  • You only have a day or two and are staying on the western side of the Dolomites
  • Crowded trails will spoil the day for you and you can only go on a July or August weekend
  • You cannot manage loose gravel and short steep climbs
  • You want a quiet mountain walk rather than the region's busiest trail

What it costs

  • Toll road and Rifugio Auronzo car park, car (12-hour slot): €40 (2026 price; online reservation with the license plate is required; the road is open in season, generally late May to late October, weather permitting). Official source, checked Sep 2026.
  • Toll road and car park, motorcycle: €26 (2026 price, online reservation required). Official source, checked Sep 2026.
  • Toll road and car park, caravan or motorhome: €60 (2026 price; vans for up to 9 people pay the car rate). Official source, checked Sep 2026.
  • Shuttle 444 Dobbiaco to Rifugio Auronzo, adult round trip: €22 (2026 online price; runs 31 May to 11 October 2026; online booking of both directions required; higher prices on site). Official source, checked Sep 2026.
  • Shuttle 444, adult one way: €16. Official source, checked Sep 2026.
  • Shuttle 444, junior round trip (ages 6 to 13): €12 (free under 6). Official source, checked Sep 2026.

What travelers report

Based on 14 traveler reports (Apr 2025 to Aug 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 4 were negative.

What people like

  • The north faces seen from Forcella Lavaredo and Rifugio Locatelli are the view travelers rank as the highlight of their Dolomites trip.
  • The loop keeps changing perspective on the three peaks, with lakes and huts along the way.
  • Travelers who start early or go late in the season describe much quieter trails.
  • The second half of the loop past the Piani lakes is described as wilder and less crowded than the first.

What people complain about

  • The first stretch from Rifugio Auronzo to Forcella Lavaredo is packed in summer, with queues at shuttle stops and photo spots.
  • The 40 euro car fee plus hut prices make the day expensive, and one report mentions paying for a hut toilet after lunch.
  • Parking slots sell out and the booking system adds planning work.
  • Loose gravel and a late uphill section toward the end tire walkers more than the distance suggests.

How to do it right

  • Book a 12-hour parking slot on the Auronzo portal and add your license plate by 23:59 the day before, or book the 444 shuttle from Dobbiaco online in both directions.
  • Start before 9 a.m. or late in the day; travelers describe the first stretch from Rifugio Auronzo to Forcella Lavaredo as the most crowded part.
  • Walk the loop counterclockwise from Rifugio Auronzo via Forcella Lavaredo, Rifugio Locatelli and Malga Langalm, the route the official site describes.
  • Wear hiking shoes with grip and carry poles, water and a rain layer; reports mention loose gravel and a tiring climb near the end.
  • Carry cash and check the hut closing dates before you go, since most huts on the loop close by early October.

The trap to avoid

Driving up without a reservation: access to the Rifugio Auronzo car park is only granted to online bookings that carry the vehicle's license plate, and the slot runs 12 hours from the time you booked.

What to do instead

Why this verdict

The reports agree on the landscape and split on the logistics. Even the most critical reports call the peaks spectacular, and several travelers describe the loop as a highlight of their whole Dolomites trip. The negative reports are about getting there and sharing the trail: news coverage from July 2026 describes queues at shuttle stops and the toll road before dawn, and bloggers describe the first stretch from Rifugio Auronzo as a crowded promenade in summer.

Those complaints are real, but most of them can be planned around, which is why the verdict is go. Reports describe quieter conditions for walkers who started early, and on the second half of the loop past the Piani lakes. A forum member who walked up in late October describes an uncrowded trail, although two September reports still found the path busy in good weather. The unhappiest reports come from peak summer, or from travelers who added up the car fee, hut meals and a paid toilet.

The price question is narrower than it looks. The 40 euro fee covers a car with several people for 12 hours, and the 444 shuttle is the cheaper route for a solo traveler or a couple without a car. What the fee does not buy is solitude. If you want the peaks without the crowds, the reports point to early starts, late season and the longer approaches from Val Fiscalina, which are harder walks.

The loop is not the right pick for everyone. One family blog suggests travelers with only a few days pick other hikes, and another blogger calls the loop overrated for the money. Those points shape the skip list above rather than overturning the verdict.

Timing and tickets

The toll road usually opens in late May and closes in late October, depending on snow. The 2026 shuttle runs from 31 May to 11 October. Most huts on the loop close by early October, so late-season walkers should carry food and cash. Prices for the 2027 season are not yet published.

Questions

How long is the Tre Cime loop?

The official Auronzo tourism site describes the classic loop from Rifugio Auronzo as about 10 km with roughly 400 meters of height difference, taking about 3 to 4 hours. One traveler who hiked it reports taking about five hours with stops.

Do you need to book the toll road?

Yes. The official site says car access to the Rifugio Auronzo car park is only allowed with an online reservation that includes the license plate. The 2026 price for a car is 40 euros for a 12-hour slot, and a stay longer than 12 hours needs two slots.

Can you get there without a car?

Yes. Shuttle 444 runs from Dobbiaco to Rifugio Auronzo from 31 May to 11 October 2026, with online booking required for both directions, and Dolomitibus runs lines from Auronzo and Cortina. The official Auronzo site advises against the Misurina bus in July and August because of long queues.

Can you arrive later than your booked time?

The official site says the ticket is valid for 12 hours from the booked access time and that you cannot enter before it. A traveler who booked a 6 a.m. slot reports driving in around 9 a.m. without trouble.

Are the huts open in autumn?

The Auronzo tourism office lists 2026 closing dates of 27 September for Rifugio Locatelli and Malga Langalm, 11 October for Rifugio Lavaredo, and the end of October for Rifugio Auronzo, weather permitting. Check before you go and bring your own food late in the season.

Is the loop suitable for children?

The official site calls the classic loop suitable for families, well signposted and without technical difficulty. One family reports completing it with children aged 9 to 11.
