Copenhagen / The verdict

Is the Copenhagen Card worth it?

Depends on your pace. The 72 hour Copenhagen Card Discover runs DKK 1039 and pays off once you average about two paid sights a day plus transport; families get extra leverage because two children under 12 get a free card per adult. Light sightseers and walkers usually lose money.

The Copenhagen story

Copenhagen is the easiest of the Scandinavian capitals: flat, compact and built for bicycles, with Nyhavn's painted waterfront, Tivoli Gardens' evening lights, the harbour baths, the Round Tower's gentle spiral ramp, and a serious food scene inside a small centre. Most of what you came for sits within a twenty-minute ride or a few metro stops, and the canal tour maps the whole city in an easy seated hour.

It depends

Go if

  • first time visitors planning several paid sights a day
  • families, since each adult card covers two children up to age 11 for free
  • trips that add Roskilde, Frederiksborg, Kronborg or the Louisiana Museum, all inside the transport zones
  • arrivals who want the airport leg bundled into sightseeing

Skip if

  • you mostly walk, shop and photograph free sights in the compact center
  • your stay is under 48 hours, when the card's cost outruns its use
  • your Tivoli day is about rides, since the card covers entrance only
  • your trip falls between Tivoli seasons or leans on museum heavy Mondays

What travelers report

Based on 12 traveler reports (Oct 2024 to Sep 2026) and the official sources linked on this page. 0 were negative.

What people like

  • Reports that ran the math mostly came out ahead, including a family saving 323 DKK over 96 hours and a forum member up nearly USD 300 across five days with Louisiana and Roskilde
  • Convenience is the recurring second win in reports: no per ride ticket decisions, the airport leg included, and spot checks handled by showing the app
  • Families call the two free child cards per adult the card's biggest lever
  • Day trips carry outsized value in reports, with Roskilde, Hillerød, Helsingør and the Louisiana Museum all inside the transport zones
  • Reports judge Discover clearly better value than the HOP version, which covers half the attractions and skips public transport

What people complain about

  • Slow travelers lose money: reports include a member who fell short of break even and threads warning buyers to run their own numbers first
  • Tivoli's inclusion is entrance only, so riders still pay for a ride pass, a surprise flagged in multiple reports
  • Official 2026 prices rose again, pushing the break even line toward two paid sights a day
  • Reports note the Round Tower left the card in April 2024, a common expectation gap for repeat visitors
  • Several museums close Mondays, which reports flag as a wasted card day mid trip if unplanned

How to do it right

  • Buy the card on the official site and it lands in the Copenhagen Card app; it activates on first use and then runs for consecutive hours.
  • Add the free child cards at checkout: each adult card covers two children aged 3 to 11.
  • For the airport leg, activate the card before boarding the M2 or the train at Terminal 3; it covers zones 1 to 99.
  • At each attraction, show the card in the app at the entrance; every attraction admits you once per card.
  • Plan around Mondays, when several museums close, and check Tivoli's season calendar before counting it in.
  • Run your own itinerary against the official savings calculator on the card site before buying.

The trap to avoid

The card covers Tivoli's gate only, so a day built around rides still needs a separate ride pass. And Discover excludes hop on hop off buses entirely; those come only with the HOP version, which reports consistently judge the weaker buy.

What to do instead

Why this verdict

The math decides this card, and the reports keep landing on the same threshold: roughly two paid sights a day plus transport is where a 72 hour Discover at DKK 1039 stops bleeding and starts paying. Below that pace, a City Pass plus walk up tickets wins. Reports on both sides agree; nobody disputes the arithmetic, just where their trip fell on it.

Two factors tilt the balance. Families get outsized value because every adult card covers two children under 12 for free, and reports call that the single biggest lever. Day trips are the other: trains to Roskilde, Frederiksborg and Kronborg sit inside the card’s zones 1 to 99 coverage, and reports credit them with pushing otherwise marginal days well past break even.

The misses matter too. Tivoli counts only as an entrance, so a ride day still costs a ride pass on top. Several museums close on Mondays, which can strand a card day mid trip. Reports also flag that the Round Tower left the card in April 2024 and that prices crept up again for 2026. And the HOP version, which trades public transport for a bus loop and covers half the attractions, is judged the poorer buy in essentially every report that compared them.

Timing and tickets

The card lives in an app and activates on first use, then runs consecutive hours, so a morning activation stretches further than an evening one. Two child cards must be added at checkout to be free. Copenhagen itself is walkable: reports note many buyers barely touch the transport component inside the compact center, which is exactly why light sightseers end up in the City Pass column instead.

Questions

What does the Copenhagen Card Discover include?

Free entry to 80 plus attractions including Tivoli Gardens entrance, Rosenborg Castle and the main museums, unlimited public transport in zones 1 to 99 including the airport leg and day trips, plus a Stromma canal tour from Ved Stranden. Each attraction admits you once per card.

Copenhagen Card Discover or HOP?

Discover for almost everyone. HOP swaps public transport for a hop on hop off bus loop, covers only 40 plus attractions and skips the airport entirely, yet costs about the same. Reports that compared the two picked Discover essentially every time.

Does the Copenhagen Card cover Tivoli rides?

No. It covers the Tivoli entrance once per card, with same day re-entry per reports, but rides always cost a separate ride pass or per ride tickets on top.

Do children need their own Copenhagen Card?

Two children aged 3 to 11 get a free card with each adult card, but they must be added at checkout to be valid. Ages 12 to 15 use the discounted Junior card, and 16 plus pays adult price.

How does the Copenhagen Card activate?

It lives in the Copenhagen Card app and starts on first use, then runs for consecutive hours, so a morning activation stretches further than an evening one. You can buy it well before the trip.

Is the airport transfer included?

Yes on Discover, which covers transport in zones 1 to 99 including the metro and train from Terminal 3. The HOP version includes no public transport at all.
